Chapter 1

A low-battery warning popped up on my phone right after I sent the text.

Zayden's face darkened at the message I'd sent my father. A second later, he sneered, "Using the same old threat on me again? Grow up, Noelle."

He tried to snatch my phone, but I kept it out of his reach. I was already nauseous from the wrenching pain in my chest and the struggle to get enough oxygen to my brain.

Going for broke, I swallowed the two ibuprofen pills Zayden gave me, but they didn't help with my altitude sickness. If anything, they made my stomach churn even more.

Nausea and retching were natural consequences of altitude sickness, but the ibuprofen made those symptoms worse.

At that moment, Erica walked over with my bottle of imported medication in hand. She eyed me piteously. "Noelle, don't be so hard on Zayden. I'm just so physically weak that the smell of gasoline makes me nauseous."

Right in front of me, she poured out two pills and slowly swallowed them with water. She deliberately slowed down her movements, exaggerating every gesture, fearing I wouldn't see clearly.

Black spots appeared in my vision.

That bottle of medication had cost me 500 dollars. I'd had it shipped from Gerbane, and it was a specialty drug meant to target altitude sickness.

Each bottle contained ten pills, and each pill cost a small fortune. And yet, Erica was ingesting my life-saving pills like they were candy, deliberately rubbing the act in my face.

Zayden held her steady. His face was full of sympathy.

"You're too kind, Erica, not that someone like Noelle would appreciate it." He turned to look down at me. "Drop the act, Noelle. I asked my friend, who's a doctor, about altitude sickness. It's caused by a lack of oxygen. It's nothing warm water and deep breathing can't fix.

"Your medication is nothing more than a placebo. It's not a miracle cure. Erica needs it more than you do because she isn't mentally strong enough to overcome her symptoms."

With some effort, I tried to reach into my backpack for the spare oxygen canister, only to realize it was missing.

Zayden pulled my oxygen canister from under Erica's seat. "Let Erica use this too. Look at you—aren't you still okay? Don't be so delicate. My family can't afford to have a princess like you."

His indifference broke me.

They'd taken my anti-sickness medication and my oxygen canister—basically everything, while I was left to suffocate in the thin air. I summoned whatever strength I had left to bite out, "Zayden, I really will die."

"Die? Can't you stop being so dramatic? Erica's condition is much worse than yours, and she hasn't complained at all," Zayden pointed out.

Erica looked feeble as she nestled in his embrace. "Noelle, I know you don't like me, but I'm really sick. Zayden told me you'd be fine, given how strong you are."

With that, she shook out another pill from the bottle and swallowed it like candy. She even made it a point to lick her lips this time, as if savoring the pill. I met her provocative, gloating gaze and felt my limbs tremble with anger.

"That's enough!"

I tried to snatch the bottle, but Zayden shoved me away. "Have you lost your mind, Noelle? Erica's weak enough as it is! Why would you want to take the pills from her?"

He'd shoved me hard enough that I hit the car door. A sharp ache filled my chest.

Erica clutched the bottle of medication tightly. Her eyes were glistening with tears as she stared at Zayden. "Did I do something wrong, Zayden? Why does Noelle hate me so much?"

"You didn't do anything wrong. She's just selfish." Zayden rubbed slow, gentle circles on Erica's back. "She's been spoiled rotten since she was little and thinks she's the center of the world."

My heart ached to the point of bursting as their conversation rang in my ears.

This was the man who'd promised he'd take care of me for the rest of my life. And now, here he was—impassive as he watched me suffer from altitude sickness.

I rallied what little strength I had left and grabbed a handful of dirt from the ground. Hurling it at Zayden with as much force as I could muster, I yelled, "Both of you can get the hell out of my sight!"

A year later, I stood on the stage of the charity gala, facing the 300-odd guests in the audience."The Shepherd Foundation has helped 1200 heart disease patients since its establishment…" My voice came through the microphone loud and clear.Logan sat in the first row. His warm and gentle gaze was locked on me. He wore a navy suit that I'd picked out.Halfway through the gala, a commotion broke out. I heard security guards yelling and the guests crying in alarm. The sound of chairs hitting the ground rang through the hall.A disheveled man in threadbare clothes burst through the crowd, stumbling as he made his way to the front. He reeked of alcohol, and his greasy hair did little to distract from his scraggly beard. It was Zayden. He fell to his knees before me and broke down in tears. "Noelle, I'm sorry!"A hush filled the hall. Everyone's gaze was on us.However, I remained surprisingly calm. I felt nothing about this unexpected encounter with Zayden."I went through hell in

The security guards dragged Zayden and his mother out of the room. His mother was still struggling to break free. "Noelle! Noelle, you can't do this to us! Zayden truly loves you! That tramp led him astray, that's all!"Sweet silence resumed the second the door slammed shut.Logan handed me a glass of warm water. His fingers grazed the back of my hand."Take it easy. Your father will take care of the rest," he reassured me in a voice so calm and steady that I thought it might soothe all my wounds.I clutched the glass of water and suddenly felt like sputtering. This was the first time in years someone had spoken to me this way—no orders, no expectations, only concern."Thank you, Dr. Gardner.""Call me Logan." He sat by the bed. "We're friends from now on."Friends. I liked that.Three days later, Dad entered the room with a smile I hadn't seen him wear in a long time. "Hey, I have good news for you, Noelle."I set my book down. "What is it?""Lowry Corporation's been investi

Zayden struggled to get up, muttering under his breath like a man possessed, "Listen, Noelle, it's not like that between Erica and me. I can explain—"The hospital room door swung open once again, cutting Zayden off. Erica stormed in, wearing high heels. There were tears in her eyes. She pointed at me and let loose a torrent of abuse."Enough of your nonsense, Noelle!" Her sharp voice could have pierced my eardrums. "I'm the one Zayden loves! Stop pestering him with your tantrums!"I froze. I couldn't believe Erica dared to say that to my face."Who the hell do you think you are, keeping Zayden all to yourself?" Erica was getting more worked up as she spoke. "He isn't happy with you! All he does is tolerate you every day!"Zayden paled. He shot to his feet. "Shut up, Erica!""Why should I?" A smug gleam flashed in Erica's eyes. "Did I say something wrong? You said it yourself, if it weren't for your family's collaboration with Noelle's, you'd never have—""Enough!" Zayden clampe

The sight of the security guards brought Zayden to his knees. His face was a mess of tears and snot. "Mr. Shepherd, I'm sorry! Our families go way back. Can't you find it in your heart to give me a second chance?"Dad looked down at Zayden and said in a cool, hard voice, "Our families may have known each other for years, but that friendship means nothing next to my daughter's life.""I truly didn't know her condition was that serious!" Zayden was losing breath from all the crying. "I thought she was just trying to get my attention. I thought—""Thought what?" I snorted. "You didn't even check my medical records or learn about my medication. Why were you so confident in your assumptions, Zayden?"His mouth opened and closed, but he couldn't come up with a single retort.Just then, the room door swung open again. Zayden's mother stormed in. She leveled an angry finger at me as she snapped, "What the hell are you playing at now, Noelle? Are you happy now that you've turned Zayden int

Blinding white light stabbed through my eyelids. Wincing, I slowly opened my eyes and found myself lying in a fancy private hospital room.A shimmering crystal chandelier hung overhead, and warm light was refracting from it. The walls were adorned with famous paintings. Even the sheets were made of silk.Logan was adjusting the equipment beside him. He was still in his white coat. His movements were swift and professional."You're awake." He turned to look at me, and I saw relief flickering in his eyes. "If I'd gotten to you five minutes later, not even the gods could have saved you."I tried to speak, but my throat hurt like hell."Don't speak. Your lungs are still recovering." Logan handed me a glass of warm water. "Drink slowly."The water soothed my sandpaper-like throat, and I finally regained my voice. "Thank you.""Don't mention it." He put his stethoscope away. "Your father will be here soon."The words had just left his mouth when the door swung open.My father entere

I wanted to stop Erica, but my body refused to obey my will.Erica poured all the remaining medicine onto the ground and crushed it hard under her foot.Red clouded my vision. I gathered my strength to push her aside and clamber out of the car. I cried hoarsely, "That medication could've saved my life! My life! Do you have any idea what you've done?"Zayden and his friends were barbecuing nearby when he heard the commotion. Frowning, he came toward us.Erica's face immediately scrunched up, and tears promptly rolled down her cheeks. She threw herself in Zayden's arms. "Zayden, I was only trying to talk some sense into Noelle, but she pushed me and destroyed all the pills…"Excuse me? My eyes widened in disbelief. For a second, I wondered if my ears had deceived me.Zayden's gaze fell on the white powder on the ground. A grave look registered on his face. "Noelle, you’re hopeless! That was life-saving medicine! You’re ruining yourself and framing Erica?""I didn't do it! It was h
