Chapter 2

Author: River Snapshot
By the time I got back to Beyton Heights, it was completely dark outside.

I entered my birthday into the keypad, but it said the code was incorrect. I tried several more times, and it still said "Error".

In the end, Blake was the one who opened the door. The moment he saw me, he froze.

I was utterly soaked through. My bangs were plastered to my forehead, and water was still dripping from my suitcase.

Frowning, he took the suitcase from me and shot me an annoyed look.

"How did you manage to get yourself into this state?"

I didn't answer.

Then, I looked down and noticed several pairs of women's shoes on the rack. None of them were mine.

Maeve got up from her couch, her voice as warm and concerned as ever.

"Noelle, you're finally here!" she exclaimed. "You must be exhausted. I kept telling Blake to go pick you up, but he wouldn't listen…"

"You're still sick," Blake said, grabbing a jacket and draping it over her shoulders. "How could I leave you here alone?"

Maeve pulled the jacket closer around herself, her cheeks turning slightly pink.

I stared at the jacket, my fingers digging into my palms.

It was the most expensive piece of clothing I'd ever bought him. He'd told me it was too nice to wear and had kept it hanging in his closet ever since.

"Blake," I called out, my voice hoarse. "Why did you change the door code?"

The apartment's passcode had been my birthday. He hadn't changed it once in four years.

"Maeve kept forgetting it, so I changed it."

But the three of us had grown up together. There was no way Maeve could've forgotten my birthday.

I clenched my jaw and pressed further.

"Does Maeve come here a lot?" I asked. "Or… are you two living together now?"

A few months ago, Blake had told me this apartment was our home. Once I moved to Bexford for work, we would live together.

But now, every corner of our home seemed to carry traces of another woman.

Blake's expression changed as soon as I finished speaking.

"Noelle, what are you imagining now? Maeve and I have been friends since we were kids. What's wrong with her staying here for a few days?"

A gust of cold wind suddenly swept through the apartment. I started coughing, my eyes turning red from the effort.

"Go take a shower," Blake said, grabbing a towel from somewhere and tossing it over my head. "Look at the state you're in after getting soaked like that."

I grabbed some clean clothes and rushed into the bathroom. The moment I had a proper look at my surroundings, I finally broke down.

My toothbrush, face wash, and towel were all gone from the counter. In their place were Maeve's things. Two brand-new toothbrushes stood side by side, the matching kind couples bought.

Their voices came through the door.

"Blake, don't be so hard on Noelle," Maeve chided. "It's my fault. I should've known better."

"This has nothing to do with you!" Blake snapped, bristling at the mention of my name. "She's just too narrow-minded. She's always making a big deal out of nothing."

The sound of running water from the shower drowned out my muffled cries.

When I came out, Blake and Maeve were sitting in the living room working on their papers. They sat so close that their shoulders touched, their faces almost brushing against each other.

"The logic doesn't quite work here," Blake said, his voice unbelievably gentle. "Let me fix this part for you. And there's something off with these experimental parameters…"

He was so focused on helping Maeve that he didn't even look at me once, as if I wasn't even there.

I walked into the bedroom and slammed the door shut behind me.

I left my suitcase in the corner of the room and opened the closet, only to find half of it was filled with Maeve's clothes. The vanity was also covered with makeup products from brands I'd never seen before.

How could this possibly be a place she only stayed at occasionally? She'd already made herself at home here.

Suddenly, I couldn't find a reason to stay.

As I booked my ticket out, Maeve sent me a private message.

"Noelle, don't overthink what happened today. Blake and I are just friends."

But a few minutes later, I came across her new post.

She'd taken a photo of Blake working on her paper. The picture was a little blurry, but even through the screen, I could see how focused he looked.

There was only one line in the caption. "I'm pretty sure my childhood friend is into me too. Should I confess?"

"I like Southbury more than Bexford," I said, a bitter smile tugging at my lips. "You always said you hated the rain in Southbury, but I actually like it."Blake looked up at me, confusion in his eyes. "Do you know why I like rainy days?"He shook his head. "It's because of you," I said, looking out of the window. The sky was dark and overcast, as if it might rain again at any moment. "Back in high school, you were in the honors program, while I was in a regular class. We barely saw each other at school."Whenever you walked me home in the rain, you'd slow down a little. Those few extra minutes were the only chance I had to spend more time with you."Something changed in Blake's expression. "Then, we went to college, and you were always busy," I continued with a small smile. "Whenever I came to Bexford to see you, you were working on experiments, competitions, or projects. The only time you'd slow down was when it rained. You'd stay home and spend the day with me."My ey

After I returned to Southbury, life became much simpler. I went home first and told my parents I was going to work in Southbury. Mom looked worried when she saw the cut on my forehead. "If I'd known this would happen, I never should've let you go to Bexford," she sobbed, carefully applying ointment to my wound. "It's okay," I reassured her with a smile. "It's just a minor injury. It'll heal in a few days."The wound in my chest hurt far more than the one on my forehead. Finding a job went even more smoothly than I'd expected.I'd spent all four years of college pushing myself to keep my grades up, gain internship experience, and compete in competitions. My résumé was packed.I interviewed with three good companies and received two offers. On my first day, my mentor looked over my résumé and said, "You're more qualified than a lot of graduate students."I smiled, but there was a bittersweet feeling in my chest. I knew I could do it. I'd always been capable, but Blake ne

Maeve hadn't expected Blake to turn her down. She stared at him, searching his face for even the slightest hesitation. There was none—he was completely firm."But Blake, you have feelings for me," she said. "I know you do. You like me too, so why can't we be together?""I'm sorry, Maeve. We can't," he replied. "You've treated me so well all these years, and I'm grateful for that. But…"He took a deep breath, his tone resolute. "I can't break up with Noelle. I've already built my future around her. I'll admit that I had feelings for you, but I was confused."The color drained from Maeve's face.Tears rolled down her cheeks as Blake patted her back."We'll still be friends, but that's all we'll ever be," he said, a hint of warning in his voice. "Don't cross that line again."Maeve covered her face and sank to the floor, sobbing. This time, Blake didn't comfort her. He turned and walked out of the hall. Then, he remembered that today was the day I was supposed to be discharge

Blake froze, then looked up at me. "What do you mean?""Nothing," I dismissed him. "I'll find a job on my own. You don't need to worry about me."He set the bowl down on the cabinet loudly. "Noelle, can you stop being so stubborn? Do you have any idea how many times I've gone back and forth trying to help you?"You can't just simply decide you're not taking the job. How am I supposed to explain that to them?"He'd always thought of me as unreasonable, even though I already told him before I even came to Bexford that I would find my own job. I didn't need their help, but he never believed me. When I didn't respond, Blake assumed I'd given in. "Fine," he relented, his tone softening. "Just focus on getting better for now. I'll see if I can buy you a few more days with the company."He came every day during the rest of my hospital stay, but he never stayed long. He said Maeve was still shaken by what had happened and wasn't fully recovered yet, so he needed to take care of her.

The driver lay on the horn, and the car sped past so close that it clipped my shoulder. I immediately lost my balance and hit the ground, skidding and rolling several feet across the pavement.Pain burned through my forehead and forearm.I lay there, rainwater mixing with dirt and seeping into my wounds. The pain was so overwhelming that I could barely breathe. Not far away, I heard Maeve crying. "Maeve, are you okay?" Blake pulled her into his arms. "Did you get hurt?"He gave no heed to me at all. Tears rolled down Maeve's cheeks as she shook her head, hurrying over to me. "Noelle!" she cried, her voice trembling. "Are you okay?"Only then did Blake notice me. He rushed over, his hands shaking as he lifted me into his arms."Noelle, are you okay? Does it hurt anywhere? I'm sorry. I swear I didn't mean to…"The pain was too excruciating for me to even speak. Moments ago, he'd pushed me out of the way without the slightest hesitation just to protect Maeve. It felt as

  • Graduation Trip to Catch a Cheating Boyfriend   Chapter 4

It was still raining outside. I wandered aimlessly down the street, thinking about the year we had applied to college. Blake and Maeve had both chosen Bexford University. They told me to apply to one of the less competitive programs there too so we wouldn't have to be apart. I went home and spent the entire night debating it. In the end, I changed my application and chose a top university in Southbury instead. Needless to say, Blake was furious when he found out. "Noelle, I just want to be with you," he said, trying to convince me to change it back. "I don't care about your qualifications."But it mattered to me. I wanted to close the gap between us, even if it was only by a little. Because of that, we ended up not speaking for a month before finally making up. Even in college, Blake was still as exceptional as ever. For four years, his social media was filled with photos of him and Maeve traveling abroad for competitions. Whenever they came home during breaks, they'd ta
