Chapter 3

Author: River Snapshot
The post hadn't been up for even a minute before the comments spiraled into a frenzy.

"Confess now! We want to see this love story happen!"

"Your childhood best friend is super hot. I'd fall for him too!"

I switched to my private account and left a reply in the comments.

"Have some shame."

The moment I posted it, people started attacking me.

"Some people are just jealous. They can't stand seeing others happy."

More and more people piled on in the comments, and soon my DMs were flooded too.

A few minutes later, the comment was deleted, and my account was restricted from posting.

At 1:00 am, Maeve updated her caption.

"I've made up my mind! If this gets 100,000 likes, I'll confess. I don't want to miss my chance with him."

The likes shot up like crazy. It passed 10,000 in less than a minute and quickly started trending.

I liked the post too. If their feelings were mutual, then I'd give them what they wanted.

At some point, Blake came back into the bedroom. I was in his arms when I woke up, but he smelled like Maeve's perfume. It was a sweet, lingering scent that made me want to throw up.

I tried to push him away, but his arms tightened around me.

There were dark circles under his eye, a clear sign that he'd obviously stayed up late again helping Maeve with her paper.

"Stop moving around," he grumbled. "Let me sleep."

Still, I pulled myself out of his arms and went to wash up. I opened my suitcase and started packing.

That immediately woke Blake.

"Noelle, where are you going?" he asked, grabbing my wrist.

"Back to Southbury."

"Didn't you say you were going to look for a job in Bexford? Why are you going back to Southbury?"

"Blake, let's break up," I said, enunciating every word clearly as I looked him straight in the eye.

He let out a disbelieving laugh, as if I'd just told him a joke.

"You're breaking up with me because I didn't come pick you up at the station?" he asked, incredulous. "Noelle, are you seriously being this childish?"

Every time we argued, he'd call me childish. This time was no different, but I didn't want to explain myself anymore.

When I didn't respond, Blake opened a drawer and tossed a document onto the table.

"Maeve and I found you an internship at a major company. You start in a few days," he announced. "We had to call in a lot of favors to get you a job.

"Grow up, Noelle. Stop making everyone worry about you."

I glanced at the paperwork.

It was an internship at one of the biggest tech companies, paying 3,000 dollars a month with only one day off a week. But the offer I'd received paid more than twice as much.

I slammed the paperwork onto the table.

"Is that really how useless you think I am?" I asked, my eyes burning with tears. "You really think I can't even find a job on my own?"

Blake looked at me, his gaze condescending.

"What qualifications do you even have? Maeve and I went to Bexford University, while you only went to an ordinary college. If it weren't for us, with a résumé like yours, you wouldn't even get through the company's doors!"

His words cut straight through me.

Growing up, Blake and Maeve had always been exceptional, while I was the ordinary one.

Whenever Blake tutored me, he'd call me an idiot.

Everyone was always pairing Blake and Maeve together, saying they were perfect for each other.

Even after I started dating Blake, his parents never really warmed up to me. Whenever I went to their house for dinner, they'd make one comment after another about how I wasn't good enough for Blake, how I couldn't compare to Maeve, and how we should break up.

I'd cried over it more times than I could count, but Blake would always take my hand and reassure me that I wasn't beneath him, telling me to ignore whatever his parents said.

But now, he looked down on me just like everyone else.

"Blake, you think I'm not good enough for you too, don't you? You think my degree embarrasses you, right?"

He froze for a moment, panic flashing across his face.

"No, that's not what I meant. Noelle, I—”

I shoved him away. As I stormed out of the bedroom, I ran straight into Maeve, who was standing outside the door.

Acting as though nothing had happened, she reached for my arm, her expression completely innocent.

"Noelle, you've misunderstood," she said. "That's not what we meant."

I'd had enough.

"Get out of my way!" I snarled, yanking my arm away.

I used more force than I meant to, and Maeve cried out and fell hard onto the floor.

Blake's furious voice came from behind me. He shoved past me and immediately crouched down to help her.

"Noelle, that's enough!"

It was the first time he'd ever yelled at me like that.

A sharp, suffocating pain spread through my chest as I slammed the door behind me and walked out without looking back.

Blake didn't come after me.

"I like Southbury more than Bexford," I said, a bitter smile tugging at my lips. "You always said you hated the rain in Southbury, but I actually like it."Blake looked up at me, confusion in his eyes. "Do you know why I like rainy days?"He shook his head. "It's because of you," I said, looking out of the window. The sky was dark and overcast, as if it might rain again at any moment. "Back in high school, you were in the honors program, while I was in a regular class. We barely saw each other at school."Whenever you walked me home in the rain, you'd slow down a little. Those few extra minutes were the only chance I had to spend more time with you."Something changed in Blake's expression. "Then, we went to college, and you were always busy," I continued with a small smile. "Whenever I came to Bexford to see you, you were working on experiments, competitions, or projects. The only time you'd slow down was when it rained. You'd stay home and spend the day with me."My ey

After I returned to Southbury, life became much simpler. I went home first and told my parents I was going to work in Southbury. Mom looked worried when she saw the cut on my forehead. "If I'd known this would happen, I never should've let you go to Bexford," she sobbed, carefully applying ointment to my wound. "It's okay," I reassured her with a smile. "It's just a minor injury. It'll heal in a few days."The wound in my chest hurt far more than the one on my forehead. Finding a job went even more smoothly than I'd expected.I'd spent all four years of college pushing myself to keep my grades up, gain internship experience, and compete in competitions. My résumé was packed.I interviewed with three good companies and received two offers. On my first day, my mentor looked over my résumé and said, "You're more qualified than a lot of graduate students."I smiled, but there was a bittersweet feeling in my chest. I knew I could do it. I'd always been capable, but Blake ne

Maeve hadn't expected Blake to turn her down. She stared at him, searching his face for even the slightest hesitation. There was none—he was completely firm."But Blake, you have feelings for me," she said. "I know you do. You like me too, so why can't we be together?""I'm sorry, Maeve. We can't," he replied. "You've treated me so well all these years, and I'm grateful for that. But…"He took a deep breath, his tone resolute. "I can't break up with Noelle. I've already built my future around her. I'll admit that I had feelings for you, but I was confused."The color drained from Maeve's face.Tears rolled down her cheeks as Blake patted her back."We'll still be friends, but that's all we'll ever be," he said, a hint of warning in his voice. "Don't cross that line again."Maeve covered her face and sank to the floor, sobbing. This time, Blake didn't comfort her. He turned and walked out of the hall. Then, he remembered that today was the day I was supposed to be discharge

Blake froze, then looked up at me. "What do you mean?""Nothing," I dismissed him. "I'll find a job on my own. You don't need to worry about me."He set the bowl down on the cabinet loudly. "Noelle, can you stop being so stubborn? Do you have any idea how many times I've gone back and forth trying to help you?"You can't just simply decide you're not taking the job. How am I supposed to explain that to them?"He'd always thought of me as unreasonable, even though I already told him before I even came to Bexford that I would find my own job. I didn't need their help, but he never believed me. When I didn't respond, Blake assumed I'd given in. "Fine," he relented, his tone softening. "Just focus on getting better for now. I'll see if I can buy you a few more days with the company."He came every day during the rest of my hospital stay, but he never stayed long. He said Maeve was still shaken by what had happened and wasn't fully recovered yet, so he needed to take care of her.

The driver lay on the horn, and the car sped past so close that it clipped my shoulder. I immediately lost my balance and hit the ground, skidding and rolling several feet across the pavement.Pain burned through my forehead and forearm.I lay there, rainwater mixing with dirt and seeping into my wounds. The pain was so overwhelming that I could barely breathe. Not far away, I heard Maeve crying. "Maeve, are you okay?" Blake pulled her into his arms. "Did you get hurt?"He gave no heed to me at all. Tears rolled down Maeve's cheeks as she shook her head, hurrying over to me. "Noelle!" she cried, her voice trembling. "Are you okay?"Only then did Blake notice me. He rushed over, his hands shaking as he lifted me into his arms."Noelle, are you okay? Does it hurt anywhere? I'm sorry. I swear I didn't mean to…"The pain was too excruciating for me to even speak. Moments ago, he'd pushed me out of the way without the slightest hesitation just to protect Maeve. It felt as

  • Graduation Trip to Catch a Cheating Boyfriend   Chapter 4

It was still raining outside. I wandered aimlessly down the street, thinking about the year we had applied to college. Blake and Maeve had both chosen Bexford University. They told me to apply to one of the less competitive programs there too so we wouldn't have to be apart. I went home and spent the entire night debating it. In the end, I changed my application and chose a top university in Southbury instead. Needless to say, Blake was furious when he found out. "Noelle, I just want to be with you," he said, trying to convince me to change it back. "I don't care about your qualifications."But it mattered to me. I wanted to close the gap between us, even if it was only by a little. Because of that, we ended up not speaking for a month before finally making up. Even in college, Blake was still as exceptional as ever. For four years, his social media was filled with photos of him and Maeve traveling abroad for competitions. Whenever they came home during breaks, they'd ta
