Chapter 3

Author: Ivy Chamberlain
After I hung up, Lola rose to her feet. "Don Valenti, let me come with you."

I was about to refuse, but she spoke first, her eyes full of concern. "I won't tell Evelina that you don't have long. I just can't let you go alone. Not like this."

I did not have the strength to argue. I gave a small nod.

The federal courthouse in Valetta had a private VIP corridor reserved exclusively for the city's elite families and local mafia clans. Within it, there was absolute discretion.

I spotted Evelina from a distance, standing by the ornate iron gates with Enzo at her side. Years had passed, but he had not changed at all. He was still the same man, skilled at wearing that mask of tenderness and devotion.

When she saw me arrive with Lola, surprise flickered across Evelina's face. "Lola, why did you come?"

Lola's expression was hard. "Evelina, are you really going through with this divorce? Think about it. He's given you everything for years, and you had the entire Valenti family's resources at your disposal. Do you know how many women in this city would kill for that?"

Evelina's lips curled into a mocking smile. "Leo, did you bring Lola here to talk me out of this? Are you trying to win me back?"

Before I could speak, Lola cut in. "He didn't send me. I came on my own.

"Evelina, wake up. The Don loves you more than your own parents do. After all these years, you can't pretend you haven't felt that."

Evelina's brow creased, but she could not find the words to argue.

Enzo stepped forward, placing himself directly in front of Evelina. "I'll admit that Leo treated her well, but you can't force someone to love you. Love goes both ways, and the only man Evelina has ever loved is me. My feelings for her are every bit as strong as his."

Lola's eyes filled with contempt. "You have the nerve to talk about love? You left Valetta without a word and abandoned Evelina. She cried herself to sleep every night, yet you didn't feel an ounce of guilt. The only person you've ever loved is yourself."

Enzo froze, visibly uncomfortable.

Evelina's face darkened. "Lola, there's no need to keep dredging up the past. Enzo had no choice when he left. He never meant to abandon me.

"This whole thing started with Leo. He used the Valenti family's power to threaten my parents, cut off any chance I had of going abroad, and forced me into this marriage. He's the only one to blame."

"The truth about what really happened back then is actually..." Lola was about to reveal everything, but I cut her off.

"You're right. It was all my fault. There's no point rehashing the past. Let's go inside and get this over with."

"Don Valenti!" Lola called out, desperate to keep trying.

I shook my head gently, a look that told her to let it go. Explanations had lost all meaning long ago. Evelina's heart belonged entirely to Enzo, and no amount of truth was going to warm a heart that had never been mine.

The divorce certificate was placed in Evelina's hands.

Enzo hurried to her side, beaming. "My dear, you're finally free. We can finally be openly together!"

I looked up, waiting for Evelina to celebrate. To my surprise, there was no joy on her face. She simply stood there with her head bowed, staring at the gold-embossed document in her hands without a word.

A brief flicker of hope passed through me. Could she possibly have regretted this, even for a moment?

The thought vanished as quickly as it came, and I shook my head at my own foolishness. This divorce was what she had dreamed of day and night for years. There was no chance she would waver.

Lola spoke softly. "Evelina, it's not too late to change your mind. You can still start over."

Enzo shot her a sharp glare. "Evelina will never regret this. She's never had feelings for Leo. The only way she'll ever be truly happy is with me."

Lola let out a scornful laugh. "And what exactly can you give her? Since you got back, all you've done is bounce from bar to bar. You can't even cover your own expenses without Evelina footing the bill. You're nothing but a parasite."

Enzo looked away, scrambling for a defense. "Happiness isn't just about money. I can give Evelina something no one else can, which is real companionship."

"That smooth tongue of yours is all you've got," Lola fired back.

I understood that Lola was trying to bring Evelina to her senses, but years of devotion and unconditional love had failed to change her mind. A few words of persuasion could never uproot something that had taken hold so deeply.

The divorce was finalized. I did not want any further entanglement.

"Lola, let's go," I said quietly.

Lola let out a long sigh and turned to Evelina, her eyes heavy with disappointment. "You're going to regret this."

Evelina's expression did not shift. "I'll never regret this.

"Because I never loved you."

Our eyes met. Hers held nothing but hatred.

A violent pain erupted through my chest and tore across my entire body. My limbs seized, and I could not breathe.

Evelina did not look at me again. She took Enzo's arm, got into the car, and was gone.

I clamped my hand over my mouth as warm, thick blood seeped through my fingers. My vision went dark, and my legs gave out before I hit the ground.

I could hear Lola screaming, her voice raw and shattered. I tried to raise a hand to comfort her, but my body felt weightless. My fingertips passed straight through her shoulder without any sensation of touch.

I looked down in confusion, past my own translucent hands, and saw the medical team rushing toward me with a stretcher.

That was it.

I was dead.

Lola returned to her apartment to find Evelina slumped against the front door, her eyes red and swollen, her face streaked with the evidence of hours of crying. The moment she saw Lola, Evelina lunged forward like a drowning woman grasping at a lifeline. She seized Lola's hands and held on with everything she had, tears pouring down her face."Lola, I know everything now. I was wrong. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry!"Seeing her like this, I knew she had called her parents to confirm the truth, and that they had verified every word Lola had told her.Lola wrenched her hands free, her voice flat and distant. "I'm not the one you should be apologizing to. That person is lying in the cemetery.""I know." Evelina choked on a sob."I've already annulled things with Enzo. I'll apply for a position as a groundskeeper at the cemetery. I'll stay by Leo's side day and night and spend the rest of my life making amends."I looked at her, drowning in regret, and felt nothing but calm."Is that so?

Evelina shook her head frantically. "I never wanted to fight over the business. I'm just worried that you don't have the experience to run something this size. If the entire Valenti empire is in your hands, it's only a matter of time before it falls apart.“Leo poured his whole life into building it. I can't just stand by and watch it all be destroyed."Yes, this is all for Leo. Anyway, he owed me this much."Lola turned toward my damaged headstone, tears sliding down her cheeks. "Leo, did you hear all of that? This is the woman you loved with everything you had. You've only been gone a few days, yet she's already out here scheming over what you left behind with an outsider."She stepped forward and seized Evelina's wrist. "What I told you this morning didn't get through your thick skull, did it? Leo never forced you. The whole thing was staged by your parents. All Leo did was play along because he didn't want to watch you walk into a trap."He didn't owe you anything, so stop ins

Evelina looked as though she had been struck by lightning. "What do you mean, charade?""If your parents hadn't begged him to pull some strings and keep you from chasing after Enzo, he never would've gotten himself tangled up with you in the first place.""No. He's the one who pressured my parents. He forced them to hand me over.""Pressured? Signora, do you honestly think a family as powerful as the Valentis would need to pressure anyone into giving up their daughter? Your parents came to him on their knees. "He couldn't stand by and watch you walk into a trap. He saved you, and you've hated him for it ever since."Use that brain of yours, the one that witch's poison hasn't completely fried, and think. Before the wedding, didn't Leo ask you whether you were willing? After you married, did he ever once restrict your freedom?""No! I don't believe you."I watched Evelina flee the office in a panic and let out a long, heavy sigh. She knew now."Leo, I couldn't help it. I told E

Lola drove my parents back to the estate to rest, then went alone to the penthouse lounge where my personal belongings were kept.I followed her there. The balcony was filled with every variety of daisy imaginable.Years ago, Evelina had mentioned in passing that she liked daisies, so I had spared no effort hunting down rare breeds, tending to them myself every day, and never allowing anyone else to touch them. On every occasion worth celebrating, I would pick the most perfect bouquet and give it to her.She threw them in the trash every time.Lola stood before the sea of daisies, her voice barely above a whisper. "You know, I was the one who liked daisies. That day, I was working up the nerve to tell you how I felt, but you fell for my best friend the moment you laid eyes on her. All I could do was step back and wish you well."I stared at the sadness on Lola's face, a bitter ache rising inside me.All those years, I had been so consumed with chasing after Evelina that I had com

My mother was shaking so violently with rage that she nearly fainted again. My father stood beside her, his face like stone, barely holding back his fury.Lola drew a deep breath and fixed Enzo with a stare that could cut glass. "You're right. Leo has nothing to do with either of you anymore, so get out of this cemetery. Go back and finish your wedding."The mourners around them did not hold back."Showing up to a funeral in a wedding dress? She's determined to keep him from resting in peace!""I heard she knew he was seriously poisoned yet still forced him to sign the divorce papers.""The doctors said he had seven days, but she drove him to an early grave. How disgraceful!""Get out! You're not welcome here."Evelina's face was white as paper. Her fists clenched the fabric of her wedding gown so tightly that her nails nearly tore through the skirt."No one needs to chase us off. We'll leave on our own." Enzo let out a cold scoff and grabbed Evelina's arm to pull her away."M

Lola stopped mid-step.I turned to look. Enzo had frozen on stage just as he was about to lean in and kiss Evelina, false warmth still plastered across his face. "My dear, why did you stop? The guests are waiting for us to finish the ceremony."Evelina looked at him, apologetic. "I'm sorry. There's something I need to confirm in person, and it can't wait."Enzo's expression darkened instantly, but with a room full of guests watching, he swallowed his anger and forced a smile. "My dear, what could possibly be more important than our wedding? Do you want me to come with you?""No. I'll be quick. It won't take long."Evelina gathered her skirt and hurried over to Lola. "I'm going to the cemetery with you. I want to see for myself whether he's actually dead."Even now, she still refused to believe I was gone. She was still convinced it was all an elaborate trap I had set to punish her.Lola studied her face for a long moment, then gave a slow nod. "Fine. I'll take you."I drifted a
