Chapter 4

Author: Ivy Chamberlain
I did not know why, but death did not deliver me into God's embrace. Instead, I became a transparent spirit, drifting behind Lola and watching everything that followed.

As my most capable assistant, Lola possessed an extraordinary ability to take charge. She immediately mobilized the people around me, locked down the hospital, and secured my body.

At the same time, she contacted the family elders and coordinated every detail of the funeral arrangements.

After the incident, I had called my younger brother back from abroad to take over the family's affairs so the organization would not fall apart without me.

Lola kept vigil through every night in the family's memorial hall where my urn had been placed, going over the funeral preparations until morning.

Although staff members assisted with every task, the toll on her was impossible to miss. She grew thinner and more exhausted by the day.

Three nights before the funeral, the vast memorial hall was empty except for Lola.

She sat alone before the altar that held my urn, her fingertips tracing the surface gently as she murmured, "Don Valenti, I don't know if I should tell Evelina so she can see you off one last time. Can you give me an answer?"

I hovered at her side, helpless.

If it were up to me, I would rather she did not. I was terrified that when Evelina learned I was dead, all I would see on her face was relief.

As long as I never witnessed it, I could still lie to myself and hold on to one last foolish piece of hope.

Lola's phone buzzed on the table. The name on the screen read ‘Evelina’.

Lola's gaze remained fixed on my urn. "Don Valenti, it seems God wants her at your funeral."

I wanted to stop her, but she had already picked up.

Evelina's voice came through the speaker, brimming with happiness. "Lola, my wedding with Enzo is in three days. I'll send you the venue details later. The bridesmaid dress should be delivered to your place soon. I want you there to witness the happiest day of my life."

Even as a ghost, those words hit like a blow to the chest, leaving a dull, suffocating ache in what was left of me.

Lola's voice turned cold, barely containing her fury. "Three days from now? Why that day?"

Evelina sounded puzzled. "What's wrong with it? That's the day Enzo and I first met, ten years ago. We both thought it would be meaningful to get married on that date."

"Nothing. I'll be there." Lola ended the call, her composure intact, but her tears hit the floor the moment the screen went dark.

"Don Valenti, did you hear that? Her big day with Enzo falls on the same day as your funeral. The people who poisoned you are still out there, free as ever, and she's happily planning a wedding.

"It's like she doesn't have a heart."

She was right. That was the day of my funeral.

However, I had already cut all ties with her. Which day she chose to hold her wedding was her own decision. Freedom was the last gift I had given her, and I was not going to use my death to take it away again.

Perhaps it was fitting, in its own way. At the very least, she would be celebrating every year on the anniversary of my burial.

The three days passed in a blink. Lola dressed in a somber, matte-black funeral gown and a wide-brimmed hat with a dark veil, then headed to Evelina's wedding.

The venue was our seaside villa.

Three years ago, Evelina had mentioned wanting to watch the sunrise over the ocean, so I had spent a fortune to buy this place for her. The grounds were covered in climbing roses, and the season was perfect for them.

The sea breeze sent waves rippling through the pink blossoms. It was admittedly a beautiful place for a wedding.

I floated at Lola's side as we entered the glittering, crowded reception hall together.

The moment the guests caught sight of Lola in full mourning attire, grief written across her face, the room went quiet. Shocked whispers spread through the crowd, and the festive noise died away.

Evelina rushed over, her expression furious. "Lola, what's the meaning of this? Showing up to my wedding in all black? I sent you a dress, and you're my maid of honor!

"And the ceremony is about to start, yet you're only arriving now? I don't appreciate this kind of joke."

Lola offered a hollow smile.

"A joke? After your wedding, I have to attend Don Valenti's funeral. I won't have time to change.

"And this is my wedding gift to you."

She held out a document.

Lola returned to her apartment to find Evelina slumped against the front door, her eyes red and swollen, her face streaked with the evidence of hours of crying. The moment she saw Lola, Evelina lunged forward like a drowning woman grasping at a lifeline. She seized Lola's hands and held on with everything she had, tears pouring down her face."Lola, I know everything now. I was wrong. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry!"Seeing her like this, I knew she had called her parents to confirm the truth, and that they had verified every word Lola had told her.Lola wrenched her hands free, her voice flat and distant. "I'm not the one you should be apologizing to. That person is lying in the cemetery.""I know." Evelina choked on a sob."I've already annulled things with Enzo. I'll apply for a position as a groundskeeper at the cemetery. I'll stay by Leo's side day and night and spend the rest of my life making amends."I looked at her, drowning in regret, and felt nothing but calm."Is that so?

Evelina shook her head frantically. "I never wanted to fight over the business. I'm just worried that you don't have the experience to run something this size. If the entire Valenti empire is in your hands, it's only a matter of time before it falls apart.“Leo poured his whole life into building it. I can't just stand by and watch it all be destroyed."Yes, this is all for Leo. Anyway, he owed me this much."Lola turned toward my damaged headstone, tears sliding down her cheeks. "Leo, did you hear all of that? This is the woman you loved with everything you had. You've only been gone a few days, yet she's already out here scheming over what you left behind with an outsider."She stepped forward and seized Evelina's wrist. "What I told you this morning didn't get through your thick skull, did it? Leo never forced you. The whole thing was staged by your parents. All Leo did was play along because he didn't want to watch you walk into a trap."He didn't owe you anything, so stop ins

Evelina looked as though she had been struck by lightning. "What do you mean, charade?""If your parents hadn't begged him to pull some strings and keep you from chasing after Enzo, he never would've gotten himself tangled up with you in the first place.""No. He's the one who pressured my parents. He forced them to hand me over.""Pressured? Signora, do you honestly think a family as powerful as the Valentis would need to pressure anyone into giving up their daughter? Your parents came to him on their knees. "He couldn't stand by and watch you walk into a trap. He saved you, and you've hated him for it ever since."Use that brain of yours, the one that witch's poison hasn't completely fried, and think. Before the wedding, didn't Leo ask you whether you were willing? After you married, did he ever once restrict your freedom?""No! I don't believe you."I watched Evelina flee the office in a panic and let out a long, heavy sigh. She knew now."Leo, I couldn't help it. I told E

Lola drove my parents back to the estate to rest, then went alone to the penthouse lounge where my personal belongings were kept.I followed her there. The balcony was filled with every variety of daisy imaginable.Years ago, Evelina had mentioned in passing that she liked daisies, so I had spared no effort hunting down rare breeds, tending to them myself every day, and never allowing anyone else to touch them. On every occasion worth celebrating, I would pick the most perfect bouquet and give it to her.She threw them in the trash every time.Lola stood before the sea of daisies, her voice barely above a whisper. "You know, I was the one who liked daisies. That day, I was working up the nerve to tell you how I felt, but you fell for my best friend the moment you laid eyes on her. All I could do was step back and wish you well."I stared at the sadness on Lola's face, a bitter ache rising inside me.All those years, I had been so consumed with chasing after Evelina that I had com

My mother was shaking so violently with rage that she nearly fainted again. My father stood beside her, his face like stone, barely holding back his fury.Lola drew a deep breath and fixed Enzo with a stare that could cut glass. "You're right. Leo has nothing to do with either of you anymore, so get out of this cemetery. Go back and finish your wedding."The mourners around them did not hold back."Showing up to a funeral in a wedding dress? She's determined to keep him from resting in peace!""I heard she knew he was seriously poisoned yet still forced him to sign the divorce papers.""The doctors said he had seven days, but she drove him to an early grave. How disgraceful!""Get out! You're not welcome here."Evelina's face was white as paper. Her fists clenched the fabric of her wedding gown so tightly that her nails nearly tore through the skirt."No one needs to chase us off. We'll leave on our own." Enzo let out a cold scoff and grabbed Evelina's arm to pull her away."M

Lola stopped mid-step.I turned to look. Enzo had frozen on stage just as he was about to lean in and kiss Evelina, false warmth still plastered across his face. "My dear, why did you stop? The guests are waiting for us to finish the ceremony."Evelina looked at him, apologetic. "I'm sorry. There's something I need to confirm in person, and it can't wait."Enzo's expression darkened instantly, but with a room full of guests watching, he swallowed his anger and forced a smile. "My dear, what could possibly be more important than our wedding? Do you want me to come with you?""No. I'll be quick. It won't take long."Evelina gathered her skirt and hurried over to Lola. "I'm going to the cemetery with you. I want to see for myself whether he's actually dead."Even now, she still refused to believe I was gone. She was still convinced it was all an elaborate trap I had set to punish her.Lola studied her face for a long moment, then gave a slow nod. "Fine. I'll take you."I drifted a
