Chapter 3

作者: Glossy Shell
Three days later, Shawn came to see me looking happy, with a thick stack of documents in his hands. "Nina, it's done. Harrison agreed."

His voice was trembling with excitement. "A ten percent share in Grandview Tech under Fletcher Group. Harrison transferred it directly into your name and said it was a gift for his future great-grandchild!"

I raised an eyebrow and took the share transfer agreement from him.

That was certainly generous, but it only made Shawn look even more useless.

'See? I told you Dad was the richest man in the country!' The little voice sounded right on time with pride. 'This is nothing. Ten percent is just an appetizer. Besides, Dad knows it's you. He's been looking for you all this time. Just relax!'

He had been looking for me?

How did the child know that?

I frowned and pushed down the questions rising in my mind.

Shawn did not notice anything off about me and kept babbling excitedly. "I talked to your parents, too. Once they saw this, all their worries disappeared. You feel better now, right?"

That was true. My parents had been upset over the trouble with the family's company and my ridiculous wedding. They felt better once they saw the transfer agreement in writing.

They still felt it was unfair for me, but at least I now had financial security, so their attitude softened a lot as well.

Meanwhile, the Fletcher family was surprisingly efficient.

Less than two days after the transfer agreement was signed, they sent over a butler named Alfred.

Alfred handed me an elegant booklet.

The wedding gifts alone were three pages long, and I had never even heard of many of the items on the list.

'Mom, look. An emerald jewelry set! Antiques! And an entire building in that newly developed Eastside property.' The little one shouted excitedly in my head. 'I told you Dad's generous. He must be worried you'll be mistreated. Even if he can't be here, he wants to give you the respect you deserve!'

"Isn't this a little too grand?" I hesitated as I asked Alfred. "Hugh is still recovering, after all. There's no need to make it something so grand, right?"

Alfred smiled faintly. "No need to worry, Ms. Young. This is simply proof of the family's sincerity."

'Dad is just embarrassed. He actually cares about you a lot. He's worried you won't like him, and he doesn't want you bullied by Shawn and that pretentious woman.'

Worried I would not like him?

I held the list in my hands that was worth more than gold, my emotions becoming complicated.

A man I had only spent one night with could respect and care about me.

Then I thought of Shawn's face and sighed silently. My taste in men really was terrible.

'It's fine. We can live without a lot of love, but we can't live without a lot of money!' The voice said again.

Just as Alfred and I were discussing the wedding details, the doorbell rang.

"Nina, I've brought Suzie to see you. We also need to discuss something," Shawn said, smiling as if nothing was wrong.

Suzie wore a beige dress, and the way she looked at me carried pity and a hint of condescension. "Nina, how are you doing?"

Her voice was soft and delicate as she continued. "This must be so hard for you, having to marry... Well, don't worry. Shawn and I will both remember how good you've been to us."

Before I could speak, the little one in my mind exploded in anger first. 'Gah! I'm so mad right now! It's this fake woman again! She's the one who kept bullying you in your past life! Retaliate! Let her know her place!'

Shawn did not seem to notice the strange atmosphere and continued talking. "I feel better now that a butler is helping with the wedding. Suzie's family is putting a lot of pressure on her, and she's been in a bad mood, so I thought I'd let her talk with you more. After all, you'll be family eventually…'

Family?

I looked at their arms that were held close and only found it bitterly ironic.

Suzie stepped in at just the right moment, her tone boastful as she said, "That's right, Nina. Shawn feels sorry for me, too. He said that once the trouble with my family passes, he'll give me a grand wedding. We can look after each other after that. That would be better than you spending your life guarding a living... guarding his brother all alone."

Shawn truly disappeared after that.I heard that Hugh's men sent him to a remote small town, and the little money he had left was stolen on the way.He tried to contact Suzie, only to learn that her family had already cut all ties with him. Suzie herself agreed with her family's arrangements and married another wealthy businessman from a well-connected family. I heard the wedding was quite lively. The woman he had once treated as his dream girl did not hesitate for even a second when he fell on hard times. She turned around and threw herself into another man's arms immediately. When I learned the news, I was eating the fresh cherries Hugh had sent over. All I could feel was how ironic everything had been. Two weeks later, my phone received another call from an unfamiliar number. I did not want to answer, but the caller refused to give up.When I picked up, Shawn's desperate voice came through, thick with sobs. "Nina, it's me. I was wrong. I really know I was wrong now. I have not

The farce had finally come to an end.Harrison rubbed his temples in exhaustion and sighed at us. "I'm sorry you had to see that, Nina. I know you're treated unfairly. Hugh, take good care of her from now on.""Don't worry, Grandpa," Hugh answered solemnly.I thought that would be the end of it. Shawn had been exposed in public and thrown out, so he should have been too ashamed to show his face again. But I had underestimated how thick-skinned he was.One afternoon, a few days later, I went to a prenatal appointment alone. After I left the hospital and had just reached the parking lot, a figure suddenly ran out from behind a pillar and blocked my way.It was Shawn. In just a few short days, he had become so worn out that he was almost unrecognizable."Nina!" He called out to me in a hoarse voice and tried to grab my arm.I quickly took a few steps backward and avoided his touch. I frowned as I said, "Shawn, what do you want? Move.""Nina, I know what I did was wrong. I really

That being said, we both knew Shawn would never accept his end.Sure enough, Hugh came home early a few days later. "Shawn went to the Fletcher estate."I was a little surprised. Shawn was a Gibson through and through. How did he have the bravery to approach the Fletcher family?"Oh? What's he planning to do? Cry and repent? Or turn around and blame someone else?" I asked in interest.Hugh took my hand, his tone relaxed. "Come see for yourself. Grandpa wants to meet you, too. We can watch the show while we're there."When we arrived at the Fletcher estate, the mood was heavy.Harrison was sitting at the head of the room with an unpleasant expression, and several older relatives were there as well.Shawn stood in the hall, his face dark as he carried the kind of madness that came from having nothing left to lose. Suzie was behind him, playing the fragile woman. As soon as he saw us, Shawn immediately pointed at me and shouted at Harrison, "Mr. Harrison, the child inside of Nina

Over the next few days, my phone kept receiving messages from Shawn. At first, he pretended to be deeply affectionate. [Nina, are you okay? I know you had no choice but to marry my brother. You're the only one in my heart.]Then, he started testing me. [How is my brother treating you? He isn't making things difficult for you, is he? Come to me whenever you need anything.]Lately, he had become somewhat agitated. [Why aren't you replying to my messages? Did you really fall for my brother? Don't forget our original plan!]I looked at those text messages and found them laughable.I was probably still that same devoted woman with lingering feelings for him in his eyes. A lovesick fool who endured humiliation and married a man in a coma for love.I did not reply to a single one of them and muted my notifications. That night, Hugh picked me up. He suddenly said, "Nina, there's something I need to tell you.""Yes?" I turned to look at him.The light inside the car was dim, outlining

The next day, Hugh took me to see the art studio he had prepared for me.It was a room with excellent natural light and faced the garden. It had easels, paints, and every tool I could possibly need. There were even printed copies of several paintings I had posted on social media back when I was a student, carefully placed in a folder. He had really put a lot of thought into this. The days that followed were peaceful, but not dull.Hugh was busy handling the work that had piled up while he was supposedly unconscious and dealing with the aftermath of cleaning up his company. However, he always tried to come home for dinner. He asked about my health and made time to go with me to my prenatal checkup appointments. He did not say much, but his actions were thoughtful indeed. The awkwardness and unfamiliarity between us gradually faded as we spent more time together.'Dad secretly looked at you again today. His eyes were so gentle.' The little one had become the biggest supporter of ou

I calmed myself and took the glass of water Hugh was handing me, my hands still sensing the lingering warmth he had left behind."I didn't suffer that much." I started before pausing, then decided to get straight to the point. "I knew about Shawn's schemes. Marrying you was my choice."Hugh watched me with those deep eyes, but he did not answer right away. Instead, he walked slowly to the couch across from me and sat down."Choice?" he repeated quietly. "Nina, do you really think this was a choice you made all on your own?"I froze and looked up at him. 'Is Dad finally going to tell her? Hurry up! Tell Mom how hard you looked for her.'His gaze was calm as he said, "You were drunk and went into the wrong room at the hotel that night."His tone was steady, but my heart skipped a beat. "When I woke up the next day, you were already gone. I looked for you."My fingers tightened around the glass. 'Yes! That's right! Dad had his people investigate for a long time! He even went near

My whole body stiffened, and I turned around. At the end of the red carpet, the grand doors of the banquet hall had opened at some point. A man in a crisp white suit was walking in slowly. It was Hugh.He really was not in a coma! The smug smile on Shawn's face froze, as if someone had struck hi

Suzie had almost said "living corpse", but she stopped herself in time. Still, it was obvious enough.I was annoyed, and I did not hide it from them. "Alfred, I don't feel well. "You're right," I said with a calm voice as I forced down the storm of emotions I had. "Suzie did save you."Joy appeared on Shawn's face instantly."But…" I continued, "I should at least see what condition your brother is in first. Otherwise, I can't explain this to my parents."Shawn froze, as
