Chapter 4

Author: Glossy Shell
Suzie had almost said "living corpse", but she stopped herself in time. Still, it was obvious enough.

I was annoyed, and I did not hide it from them. "Alfred, I don't feel well. See them out."

Shawn and Suzie's expressions changed instantly. Suzie's eyes reddened, and she looked at Shawn as if I had just done something wrong to her.

Alfred did not wait for Shawn to speak. "Mr. Gibson, Ms. Sanders. Ms. Young needs to rest, so please leave."

Faced with Alfred's adamant bearing, Shawn did not dare act out in front of the people from the Fletcher family. Furious, he dragged the tearful Suzie away in disgrace.

I had no idea why they were even here.

Not long after they left, my phone rang. It was Shawn.

I picked it up, and Shawn didn't even give me a moment. "Nina! What was that all about? You embarrassed Suzie in front of a mere butler! She was only worried about you! Did you have to go that far? Did seeing Suzie and me together upset you?"

He was so full of himself that it almost made me chuckle out of fury. He really thought so highly of himself.

I could not be bothered to argue with him as I hung up and blocked him.

The world instantly went quiet.

The wedding preparations moved unbelievably fast.

From finalizing the details to getting everything in place, it felt like only a blink of an eye had passed. The date was set for the eighth of next month and was perfect.

"This is... A little too fast, isn't it?" I looked at the gold-foil invitation in my hand, still feeling a little dazed. Planning a wedding would take at least three to five months for an ordinary family. Meanwhile, mine had taken less than a month from beginning to the end.

'Fast is good.' The little one seemed to kick inside my stomach. 'Dad must be afraid something will go wrong if this drags on. He's worried you'll run away. He isn't done with his side completely yet, so he has to marry you into the family first before he can calm down.'

Worried I would run away?

I shook my head helplessly.

But that was fine too. It was better to do this quickly and avoid more messes.

Regardless, I did not have any real feelings for him. I just figured that marrying him would not be a total loss.

-

On the day of the wedding, the scale was every bit as grand and extravagant as the gift list was.

The venue was a private estate under Hugh's name. Security was tight, and every guest was either wealthy or powerful.

I wore an expensive custom wedding dress and a priceless jewelry set, ready to walk down the aisle with my father.

An empty wheelchair sat in the groom's place, representing my comatose groom, Hugh.

The guests all understood what it meant, and their sympathetic or curious gazes fell on me.

As a representative of the groom's family, Shawn also stood at the side.

There was a complicated smile on his face, but most of it was smugness over the fortune he thought was about to fall into his hands.

The music began. Just as I took one step forward, Suzie drifted gracefully into my path and stopped me.

"Nina," she said, putting on an incredibly generous front. "Today is your big day, but it doesn't look very proper with no groom at the altar. I'll lend you Shawn for now. After all, you two had a past. Just treat it as fulfilling a dream today. Don't be too sad."

She made it sound so affectionate, as if she were truly generously giving away something she loved.

A few subtle looks landed on us from around the room.

"A past?"

If she had not said anything, no one would have known. Even Shawn shot her a disapproving look.

Before I could speak, the little one's furious voice rang in my head. 'Mom! Tear her apart! Otherwise, I'm not a Fletcher!'

I was so angry at her absurd reasoning and fakeness that I chuckled.

Lend him to me?

Fulfill a dream?

Did she think Shawn was some kind of prize?

I was just about to speak when I suddenly realized the entire room had fallen silent.

Countless disbelieving gazes moved past me and focused on the entrance behind me.

A low voice cut through the gradually quiet atmosphere, ringing through the vast banquet hall. "Since when did my bride need another woman to lend her a man to fulfill a dream?"

Shawn truly disappeared after that.I heard that Hugh's men sent him to a remote small town, and the little money he had left was stolen on the way.He tried to contact Suzie, only to learn that her family had already cut all ties with him. Suzie herself agreed with her family's arrangements and married another wealthy businessman from a well-connected family. I heard the wedding was quite lively. The woman he had once treated as his dream girl did not hesitate for even a second when he fell on hard times. She turned around and threw herself into another man's arms immediately. When I learned the news, I was eating the fresh cherries Hugh had sent over. All I could feel was how ironic everything had been. Two weeks later, my phone received another call from an unfamiliar number. I did not want to answer, but the caller refused to give up.When I picked up, Shawn's desperate voice came through, thick with sobs. "Nina, it's me. I was wrong. I really know I was wrong now. I have not

The farce had finally come to an end.Harrison rubbed his temples in exhaustion and sighed at us. "I'm sorry you had to see that, Nina. I know you're treated unfairly. Hugh, take good care of her from now on.""Don't worry, Grandpa," Hugh answered solemnly.I thought that would be the end of it. Shawn had been exposed in public and thrown out, so he should have been too ashamed to show his face again. But I had underestimated how thick-skinned he was.One afternoon, a few days later, I went to a prenatal appointment alone. After I left the hospital and had just reached the parking lot, a figure suddenly ran out from behind a pillar and blocked my way.It was Shawn. In just a few short days, he had become so worn out that he was almost unrecognizable."Nina!" He called out to me in a hoarse voice and tried to grab my arm.I quickly took a few steps backward and avoided his touch. I frowned as I said, "Shawn, what do you want? Move.""Nina, I know what I did was wrong. I really

That being said, we both knew Shawn would never accept his end.Sure enough, Hugh came home early a few days later. "Shawn went to the Fletcher estate."I was a little surprised. Shawn was a Gibson through and through. How did he have the bravery to approach the Fletcher family?"Oh? What's he planning to do? Cry and repent? Or turn around and blame someone else?" I asked in interest.Hugh took my hand, his tone relaxed. "Come see for yourself. Grandpa wants to meet you, too. We can watch the show while we're there."When we arrived at the Fletcher estate, the mood was heavy.Harrison was sitting at the head of the room with an unpleasant expression, and several older relatives were there as well.Shawn stood in the hall, his face dark as he carried the kind of madness that came from having nothing left to lose. Suzie was behind him, playing the fragile woman. As soon as he saw us, Shawn immediately pointed at me and shouted at Harrison, "Mr. Harrison, the child inside of Nina

Over the next few days, my phone kept receiving messages from Shawn. At first, he pretended to be deeply affectionate. [Nina, are you okay? I know you had no choice but to marry my brother. You're the only one in my heart.]Then, he started testing me. [How is my brother treating you? He isn't making things difficult for you, is he? Come to me whenever you need anything.]Lately, he had become somewhat agitated. [Why aren't you replying to my messages? Did you really fall for my brother? Don't forget our original plan!]I looked at those text messages and found them laughable.I was probably still that same devoted woman with lingering feelings for him in his eyes. A lovesick fool who endured humiliation and married a man in a coma for love.I did not reply to a single one of them and muted my notifications. That night, Hugh picked me up. He suddenly said, "Nina, there's something I need to tell you.""Yes?" I turned to look at him.The light inside the car was dim, outlining

The next day, Hugh took me to see the art studio he had prepared for me.It was a room with excellent natural light and faced the garden. It had easels, paints, and every tool I could possibly need. There were even printed copies of several paintings I had posted on social media back when I was a student, carefully placed in a folder. He had really put a lot of thought into this. The days that followed were peaceful, but not dull.Hugh was busy handling the work that had piled up while he was supposedly unconscious and dealing with the aftermath of cleaning up his company. However, he always tried to come home for dinner. He asked about my health and made time to go with me to my prenatal checkup appointments. He did not say much, but his actions were thoughtful indeed. The awkwardness and unfamiliarity between us gradually faded as we spent more time together.'Dad secretly looked at you again today. His eyes were so gentle.' The little one had become the biggest supporter of ou

I calmed myself and took the glass of water Hugh was handing me, my hands still sensing the lingering warmth he had left behind."I didn't suffer that much." I started before pausing, then decided to get straight to the point. "I knew about Shawn's schemes. Marrying you was my choice."Hugh watched me with those deep eyes, but he did not answer right away. Instead, he walked slowly to the couch across from me and sat down."Choice?" he repeated quietly. "Nina, do you really think this was a choice you made all on your own?"I froze and looked up at him. 'Is Dad finally going to tell her? Hurry up! Tell Mom how hard you looked for her.'His gaze was calm as he said, "You were drunk and went into the wrong room at the hotel that night."His tone was steady, but my heart skipped a beat. "When I woke up the next day, you were already gone. I looked for you."My fingers tightened around the glass. 'Yes! That's right! Dad had his people investigate for a long time! He even went near

"You're right," I said with a calm voice as I forced down the storm of emotions I had. "Suzie did save you."Joy appeared on Shawn's face instantly."But…" I continued, "I should at least see what condition your brother is in first. Otherwise, I can't explain this to my parents."Shawn froze, as

"Suzie's family is on the verge of falling apart, and they're forcing her to marry some old man in his fifties! I can't just stand by and watch her being sacrificed like that! Just marry my brother instead!" Shawn said as he sat across from me, his brows furrowed tight. As for me, his fiancée, I ha

Three days later, Shawn came to see me looking happy, with a thick stack of documents in his hands. "Nina, it's done. Harrison agreed."His voice was trembling with excitement. My whole body stiffened, and I turned around. At the end of the red carpet, the grand doors of the banquet hall had opened at some point. A man in a crisp white suit was walking in slowly. It was Hugh.He really was not in a coma! The smug smile on Shawn's face froze, as if someone had struck hi
