Adrian’s voice cut through the noise.

“That’s enough.” He took another step toward the stage, his face tight with anger and something close to panic. The polished control he had worn all evening was gone. “I love Victoria. I am going to marry her. You and I are finished. Take the settlement, leave quietly, and stop this. You are embarrassing yourself and everyone in this room.”

For a moment no one moved.

The ballroom held

Amelia woke later than usual. For a few seconds the unfamiliar ceiling confused her. The light coming through the curtains was softer than the light in the apartment she had shared with Adrian, and the quiet felt thicker somehow. Then the previous night came back in a single heavy wave — the ballroom, the videos playing on the large screen, Adrian’s face when the Valmont name landed in the middle of the room, the strange emptiness that had followed her into the car and stayed with her all the way here. She lay still with one hand resting on her stomach.*I’m sorry,* she thought toward the child. *I’m sorry your start has been like this. I’m sorry I had to do that to your father. He didn’t leave me clean choices.*She stayed there a moment longer, letting the weight of everything settle again, then got up and went downstairs.Richard and Margaret were already at the dining table. The atmosphere was quiet and serious. A pot of tea sat between them, and Richard’s tablet lay face-down bes

The moment Amelia stepped out of the ballroom with her family, the reporters were already waiting. Cameras flashed in a sudden storm of white light. Microphones were pushed forward. Voices overlapped, sharp and relentless. “Mrs. Cross — how long have you known about the affair?” “Did you plan tonight’s exposure in advance?” “What will you do about the pregnancy?” “Are you taking full control of the Valmont shares?” “Mrs. Cross, any comment on—” Alexander moved in front of her immediately. Chloe and Natalie closed in on either side. Richard and Margaret flanked them, creating a tight barrier as they pushed through the crowd toward the waiting cars. The questions kept coming, but none of them answered. Amelia kept her eyes fixed ahead, her face carefully blank, until Alexander opened the rear door of his car and guided her inside. Chloe slid in beside

The moment Amelia and her family disappeared through the ballroom doors, the journalists closed in on Adrian like a wave. “Mr. Cross, are you going to apologize to your wife?” “Are you choosing Miss Victoria over Mrs. Cross?” “Both women are pregnant — which child are you going to claim?” “Is the Valmont Group fully withdrawing their investment?” “What happens to Cross Enterprises now?” The questions came from every direction at once. Microphones were pushed toward his face. Cameras flashed nonstop. Someone grabbed at his sleeve. Adrian opened his mouth, but no clear answer came out. His mind was still stuck on the screen, on Amelia’s voice, on the thirty-two percent that had just walked out of the building with her. Victoria moved first. She stepped in front of him, raising both hands toward the cameras. “That’s enough. The gala is over. Mr. Cross will

The ballroom had not calmed down. If anything, the noise only grew louder. People talked over each other. Phones were out. A few of the smaller investors were already moving toward the exits, but most remained where they were, watching, waiting to see who would still be standing when the night ended. Adrian raised his voice, trying to cut through the chaos. “Listen to me,” he said. “This company did not become what it is because of one person. I built Cross Enterprises from the ground up. The expansion into Singapore, the partnerships, the jobs we created — that was years of work. One personal matter should not destroy everything we have built. The numbers are strong. The future is still strong. We can still move forward.” A few people near the back hesitated. Some of the board members exchanged glances. He was still the CEO. He still held the largest single block of shares. For a mo

People near the front remained half-standing. The frozen image from the second video still lingered on the large screen behind the stage — Adrian and Victoria in the service corridor, caught in the middle of something they could no longer explain away. Then a chair scraped hard against the floor.Alexander stood up.“Who the hell do you think you are?” His voice was loud enough to carry cleanly a

Gloria stepped forward first. Her voice was sharp enough to cut through the rising noise in the ballroom.“This is difficult for you to accept, Amelia. I understand that. But Adrian is leaving you. He is prepared to give you a generous settlement. Take the money and start over somewhere else. Adrian's already found someone he intends to spend the rest of his life with. She is pregnant with his child. The Cross family needs an heir, and she is the one who can give them that.”Claire moved up beside her mother, her tone colder and more direct.“You’ve been married for eight years. In all that time you never gave him a child. You never truly stood beside him the way a wife should. Stop making this harder than it needs to be. Accept the situation and leave.”Amelia looked at both of them for a long moment. The cameras were already turning toward her. Journalists leaned in, some raising their phones higher. Guests at the nearest tables had gone completely still, the earlier shock of Adrian’
