He found me in the library at midnight.

I wasn't hiding. I hadn't returned to my room yet, and the library was the only room in the compound that did not seem to be holding its breath around me. I had a book open on my lap that I didn't read a word of, my legs folded under me, and the lamp in the corner did just enough.

When the door opened, I knew it was him before I looked up.

I always knew. That was the problem.

"You should be sleeping," he said.

"You should mind your business."

He came in a

The compound went quiet for three straight days, the first real quiet since the letter had arrived. No calls from Renard past routine check-ins. No alerts from Fen's terminal. Silas's relay held steady, green across every line.I found Raze on the east terrace that evening, the one that caught the last of the light before the compound's walls swallowed it for the night. He'd brought two glasses and a bottle he hadn't opened yet, waiting."You planned this," I said."I planned exactly nothing tonight. That was the point." He poured without asking, handed me a glass. "First evening in weeks neither of us has anywhere else we're supposed to be."I sat beside him, close enough that our shoulders touched, and let the quiet actually land instead of scanning it for the next threat. The light was going gold over the tree line, the kind of evening that made the whole war feel briefly like something happening to someone else."I keep waiting for the next thing," I admitted. "Some part of me doe

Silas requested the meeting himself, which hadn't happened before."You don't usually ask," I said, when he found me in the operations room."I don't usually have something worth interrupting your day for." He set a folder on the table, thin, precise, the way everything he produced was these days. "Full review of the eastern relay's watch logs, back through the annex operation. I want you to see it before Carver's formal report goes up the chain, because I want you to hear my read on it from me directly.""Go ahead.""I missed the second dark node's early signature by eleven days. I've already told you that. What I didn't tell you, because I only worked it out this week, is why I missed it." He opened the folder, laid out a timeline. "The relay's monitoring software flags anomalies based on a threshold my predecessor set years ago, before either dark node existed. That threshold's too coarse for what we're dealing with now. It's not that I wasn't watching closely enough. It's that the

The custody house hadn't changed since the last time I'd stood in this hallway. Same gray paint, same reinforced door, same guard who nodded once and stepped aside without a word.Marcus was sitting when I came in, not standing to meet me the way he sometimes did to make a point. He looked older than eighteen months should account for."You brought company this time," he said, glancing past me at Raze."I did.""That mean something.""It means I'm not doing this alone anymore. Get used to it." I sat across from him. "You said you'd tell me about Lena face to face. I'm here."He studied me a long moment before he spoke. "She's not what your file says she is. Logistics front, drop point — that's the shell, not the woman.""I know that already. I need what's underneath it.""She ran my handler chain the last two years before you came home. Not from a distance. Directly. She was the one who decided when I got deployed, what I got told, how much rope I got before someone decided I'd used i

Raze found me in my quarters that night. He knocked once and didn't wait for an answer."I want to give you the rest of it," he said. "All of it.""Sit."He didn't sit. He stood by the window, hands loose at his sides."Your father told me about Delacroix's outside help six days before he died. Not four months before you came back, like I let you believe. Six days. He was already sick, though none of us knew how sick yet. He said there was a second layer to Delacroix's placement that even Voss didn't understand — someone feeding Delacroix resources independent of the compound's usual channels.""Croft.""He didn't say the name. He said 'someone patient enough to wait years for the right moment,' and told me to remember that phrase, because I'd need it later even if I didn't understand it yet.""You didn't press him.""I was too busy watching him die to press him on operational details." His jaw worked once. "After he died, I found notes. Not filed with Renard. Personal notes, in a dra

Carver stood in the doorway of the operations room the next morning, report in hand, and didn't sit down."Denny didn't make it back from the annex run," he said. "Not the confrontation out front — that stayed clean, no shots fired. It was the return route. Second team, unaffiliated, opportunists who caught wind something valuable was moving and tried to intercept it independent of Croft's people.""How.""Ambush half a mile out. We were watching the front lot, not the road. Two shots. He didn't suffer." Carver's jaw was tight. "The drives are secure. He made sure of that before anything else — handed them off, covered while the others got clear.""He did his job right.""All the way to the end."I looked at the report. Eighteen months with the compound. I remembered him from the intake briefing that first week — quiet, quick with numbers, the kind of recruit Raze had flagged early as worth investing time in."Family.""A sister, two states over. Ruth.""Reach out yourself," I said. "

Renard's call came through at 7 a.m."Second account's unfrozen," he said. "No hearing, no ruling. Croft's counsel withdrew the freeze motion voluntarily this morning. Same for the third account, an hour later.""He folded," Fen said."He didn't fold. He recalculated." Renard's voice had gone careful. "The three exposure motions we filed against his shell structure are still active. Keep pressing the freeze, his counsel has to defend four fronts at once. Ours only has to defend one. He did the math.""And the exposure motions," I said. "Do we press them now that the freeze is gone.""That's your call. Press hard enough, you might crack something structural — force a real disclosure, expose the routing architecture publicly. Or consolidate what you already won."I looked at Raze. At Fen, still at her terminal."Hold them open," I said. "Don't push for a ruling yet. Let them sit unresolved. He doesn't get the freeze. He doesn't get closure either. He gets to keep paying lawyers in three

The moment the plane touched down in Denver, something tight settled in my chest. It was not loud, nor was it sudden. It was just there, heavy against my chest like a weight that prevented me from breathing properly. I sat still even after the plane started moving, my eyes on the runway outside, b

“What are you doing here?” I choked out, my heart hammering a frantic, erratic rhythm against my ribs. I stared back at the man who had ruined my life with the same ease most people use to breathe. He had been the one person that plagued my thoughts ever since I left my father's house 1095 days ag

It wasn't mercy.I want to be clear about that, even now. Standing over him with three dead men on the floor and my arm steady and my breathing almost normal, I didn't spare him because I felt something. A man that is dead tells no tale, and I wanted all I could get from him.I looked back at him a

Cold. That was the first thing I felt.It was not the kind that brushed against your skin and faded. This one sank deeper, settling into my bones like it had been waiting for me.My eyes fluttered open slowly, my vision struggling to adjust to the darkness around me. The air was damp, thick, carryi
