Adam stared at his baby girl in his arms as tears streamed down his face. This was the hardest thing he would ever have to do but he had no choice. As a delta, he knew he wouldn't be able to protect her when more dominant wolves came.

Toya, his mate came to him with the baby's bag in hand. She also had tears on her beautiful face and he hated that there was nothing he could do about it.

He had failed her and he hated himself for that. He only hoped they would be able to get over this pain in the future together.

“Is everything packed?" Adam asked, wiping the tears from his eyes.

“Yeah," Toya replied, her voice breaking. She saw the look of despair on her mate's face and dropped the bag on the floor, then she cradled his face in her hands.

“Hey," she said, “I know this hurts but we're making the right decision. What we're doing is what's best for her. We can't give her the life she deserves while we're on the run. She'll thank us for this in the future Adam."

He nodded. “You're right. I know you are but I just hate that I'm failing both as a mate and as a father."

“Don't say that!" Toya said cutting him off, “even knowing what I know now, I couldn't have asked for a better mate or a better father for Aurora."

She paused to smile at their daughter who was sleeping peacefully in her father's arms, oblivious of how her life would soon change.

“I love you Toya. So much. I promise you, someday, I'm going to fix this. I'm going to give you both the life you deserve," Adam said, kissing his mate on her forehead.

She laughed amidst the tears.

“I know you will."

Eventually, it had gotten dark enough for them to leave.

“Are you ready?" Adam asked his mate

She nodded, checking on their daughter who was still asleep. She usually wasn't this cooperative but she took it as a sign that the moon goddess agreed with their plans.

Adam took his mate and his daughter and they left in the cover of night. They left their cabin in the woods and headed into town. Catching a bus, they made their way to their destination.

When they arrived at the orphanage, tears pooled in Toya's eyes again even though she thought she was all cried out.

Adam tucked her into his side as they dropped their daughter in her carrier on the front door of the human orphanage.

They would never be able to protect her themselves and a life amongst humans was better than the life she would live with them, always on the run, always hiding, never truly being free.

They left a note in the carrier that read;

“To whom it may  concern, my name is Aurora. My parents left me here because they couldn't afford to take care of me. Please ensure I get into a good family."

Adam tried to be strong for Toya as they both couldn't afford to break down even though it was taking all of his strength to not cry.

Before they left, Toya left a locket inside the carrier that had a black and white picture of Aurora with her parents. She knew it was a risk but she wanted her daughter to have something from her parents, something she would always have with her. At least she hoped Aurora would always have it with her.

They said their final goodbyes to their baby girl and kissed her and before they left, they woke her up and disappeared into the cover of the night.

The waited in the shadows to make sure her cries alerted orphanage staff and that she wasn't just picked up by strangers.

They watched the door open and a woman come out. She stared at the crying child and picked her up as she tried to see if she could spot her parents.

Eventually, the woman took the baby and walked in and Toya finally let herself grieve. She broke down in her mate's arms as she grieved the biggest loss of her life.

She was not only grieving her daughter, she was grieving the mother she was supposed to be and Adam held her, whispering soothing words in her ears.

When she had calmed down, they made their way back to their cabin. On the commute back home, they had time to think and convinced themselves for the millionth time that they were making the right choice.

They were so consumed by their grief that they didn't notice that shadows in the woods.

By the time Adam caught a whiff of the strange scent, it was too late. An ambush was waiting for them as they arrived at their cabin.

Adam tried to fight to defend Toya but he was easily overpowered. They were both forced to their knees.

Alpha Gregory, the most ruthless alpha and the leader of their former pack came forward.

“You two have been hard to find," he said.

“Maybe that was on purpose alpha," Adam spat out.

“Watch your tone, Delta. Do not forget who you're speaking with!" Gregory responded, a coldness to his voice.

“You're too late. You'll never have her," Toya yelled.

“Just like you thought we'd never have you? You forget, I have a gift in breaking people. Ravina sends her regards."

Toya's eyes widened and suddenly, it made sense how they found them. She couldn't even be mad at Ravina, her closest friend, almost her sister when they were still in the pack. She was just thankful they were hours late and their daughter was somewhere safe.

“If you won't do this the easy way and just tell me where she is, we'll have to do this the hard way and take that information from you," the alpha said.

Toya and Adam shared a look. They always knew a day like this would come. They just didn't expect it would happen so soon. Luckily, they had a contingency plan in place.

They knew they couldn't allow themselves to be taken. Dominant wolves, especially alphas had a way of making less dominant wolves do or say things against their will.

Toya and Adam couldn't allow that happen. It would put everything they had worked for in jeopardy.

Tears fell down Toya's face as she knew what she had to do. She cried because she knew she would never get to see her daughter again. She would never have the chance to explain their decision to her. They would never have the chance to be a family.

“I love you Adam. You were the best thing that ever happened to me," She said to her mate through their mental bond.

“You are my greatest gift, my whole heart. I'm sorry it has to end like this. I love you Toya," he responded.

Before the wolves who had them surrounded could react, Adam took the pill he had hidden on himself for such an occasion and swallowed it. He had hoped he wouldn't need it but he was glad he had it with him.

“You'll never find my daughter," he said to alpha Gregory as he collapsed in pain.

“No!!" Gregory yelled as he watched both wolves fall to their deaths. He knew his chances of finding their daughter was diminished now and there was nothing he could do.

The mated pair somehow found their way to each other and held their hands as they took their last breath, a smile on their face, knowing at least, their daughter was safe.

AURORA'S POVMy eyes opened and I expected to be hit by bright rays of sunlight but I was pleasantly surprised to find that everywhere was dim. A pounding headache was the first thing that greeted me. My dry throat told me that I was thirsty but I wasn't ready to get out of bed yet. As it turns out, I didn't need to as there was a bottle of water on the night stand next to me.I grabbed it and saw a folded note under it. As I drank the water, I read the note. Sunshine, I had to leave because I have a test today that I cannot miss. Please don't run away again. You really had me worried. I left you some water and some Advil for the hangover you probably have and I dropped your curtains so the glare from the sun wouldn't add to your headache. Please come back home. Forever yours, Jared.I couldn't help the smile that appeared on my face as I read it. I took the medicine and lay back down, letting the memories of yesterday wash over me. After my meeting with Greg, I wasn't ready to go

JARED'S POV I felt it when the walls came down in Aurora's head. It was so sudden and unexpected that I almost stumbled out of my seat. I was surprised. How did she learn to do that so quickly? I was also impressed. She might deny it but she clearly was already taking to her wolf side. I had to resist the urge to push back against her defenses. I mean, I understood why. She was mad at me and I guess she wanted to feel alone in her own head. As much as that hurt my feelings, I got it and I would never begrudge her her privacy so I sucked it up and I let her be. I waited on information from Tate about the strange wolves but so far nothing. Man, I was too young to be going through this level of stress. I chuckled to myself when I thought about how typically mates were supposed to help ease your stress but mine was adding to it. I smiled knowing I wouldn't have her any other way. At some point, I called Rebecca to bring my car so I would wait there instead of by the trees like a cr

AURORA'S POV “What are you doing here?" I asked, pressing my legs together to keep from running towards him. “How did you find me?" I asked again like I didn't feel him rummaging through my mind. I felt it the moment he entered. I wanted to run but I couldn't bring myself to. As much as I didn't want to admit it to myself, I wanted—no, I needed to see him. I looked him over. He looked tired. He had grown a stubble. Even with that he looked amazing. It had me wondering how he'd look with a beard but I quickly stopped myself before I let my mind wonder too far. “So you're not going to say anything?" I asked again, finding myself getting lost in his green eyes. I closed my eyes. I didn't understand how I could be mad and wary about someone but still want nothing more than for him to wrap his arms around me and never let me go. I had to admit, while I was here at this motel, I had done some research online about werewolves and about mates. I felt like Bella Swan when she found out

JARED'S POV I let the sound of the clock ticking away attempt to distract me from my thoughts. Spoiler alert, it wasn't working. No matter how much I tried, my mind was consumed with thoughts of her. It had been two days and it had been complete radio silence for those two days. I don't know what I expected but it definitely wasn't this. I was hoping that she would take a moment to realize that I wasn't deliberately trying to keep her in the dark and that she'd eventually come back here, to me. Clearly, that wasn't the case. A knock sounded on the door to my office. I had taken to hiding out here. My room smelled too much like her and there, I was tortured by memories of her so I had been in the office the last two days. She didn't really come to the office so I was able to breathe a little better here though it didn't make much difference. I wanted to ignore the knock. I wasn't in the mood for visitors. I wasn't in the mood for anything besides Aurora but despite my instincts t

AURORA'S POV I ran to my room, my eyes blurry with tears, that I didn't even notice Rebecca coming towards me until I bumped into her. “Whoa, Rory, what's wrong?" she asked, holding her arms out to steady me. I couldn't even respond to her and I just made my way past her and entered the room. I took a duffel bag and packed a couple clothes, shoes and essentials. I didn't think I could stay there. I needed to go see Finn. I was about to leave when I remembered I wasn't wearing pants then I threw on a pair of shorts and threw my hair up in a messy bun. I wore my sneakers and then I headed out. As I walked, my mind was anything but quiet. I didn't want to but I thought about everything Jared said. I wanted to call him crazy and say he was lying. But deep down in my heart, I could feel that he wasn't lying. In the last few months, I had noticed something was different about me but I chose to ignore it because it didn't make sense. How could I explain that all my life, I had been s

JARED'S POVI was filled with a mix of emotions. A part of me was filled with anticipation. After all, this is what I'd always wanted; to share who I am with my mate and finally have no more secrets between us. However, I'd be lying if I didn't say I was also filled with dread. And fear— a raging fear that my mate was going to look at me with horror and instead of seeing me for who I am, she sees a monster and runs away faster than I can stop her. I don't think I'd be able to function properly if that happened. I'd like to believe I would be mature and leave her alone and hope she would find her way back to me but deep down, I know I would follow her around like a lovesick pup, begging for her to accept me. I sighed deeply. This was not going to be easy. “I'm waiting Jared," Aurora said, eyes confused, arms folded as she tapped her foot anxiously. Even now, she still looked breathtaking. Something told me after learning the truth, it would be a while before she let me hold her ag

JARED'S POV “Jared help me," Aurora cried out. She looked terrified but she was so far away. The more I tried to get close to her, the farther she was moving. “I'm coming!!" I yelled out, determined to make it to her even though it felt like everything was determined to keep us apart. Just then

AURORA'S POV “Here you go, one black coffee no sugar and one jelly donut," I said handing out the order to the customer. He thanked me and left. JARED'S POV I laced up my shoes and then I ran my hands through my hair as I was getting ready for my date with Aurora. JARED'S POVMy first day of classes for the new semester had been uneventful. I couldn't tell you one thing any of my professors said. I spent the entire day thinking about her, my mate. I thought it was pretty ironic how I was thinking about her only to meet her a couple of hours later. Life was
