POV: NATHANIEL

The email pings at exactly 2:14 a.m.

I should be asleep but I am not.

Sleep has been like a stranger recently.

So, here I am in my study, pacing in the dark, half dressed, with a glass of whiskey that is already warm and useless.

There is something clawing at me tonight. A tension I can’t name. Like something is about to snap but won’t tell me when. The silence feels rigged.

It is something I am used to now. The unrest. The tension. The constant waiting for the next shoe to drop.

My life has moved from blissful peace and control to desperate survival

When I hear the ping, I grab my phone out of habit, not interest. I am expecting some spam or another desperate board member needing reassurances. But when I open it, I freeze.

No subject. No message. Just one attachment.

I open it.

My mouth dries.

It is a photo.

An old one.

Our old family portrait. Me. My mother. My father. All of us lined up like some twisted American royalty. Except, someone has tampered with it.

  • HEIRESS REBORN   EXPECTED BACKLASH

POV: DAMIENBy 6:12 a.m., I have already rewritten the surgery schedule for the next month. Cancelled two out of state consults. Shifted my rotation at the research center to weekends only. I don't explain it to anyone, just send the revised calendar with my signature and let the hospital director scramble. Let them whisper. Let the board speculate.I know what they are saying. That I am arrogant. Flaunting my power, my status, my name. That I am losing it. That I am reckless. Unstable.Proud.That I think I am indispensable They are right about one thing, I am flaunting my power. And I will continue to go so to protect herAlina’s war became mine the night she almost collapsed in my arms again, I just didn't know it then. It became mine when I watched her sit on that sterile cot with her fists clenched, her body broken, her eyes dead and her voice flat, talking about helplessness like it was a person she knew by name."I am not doing this for revenge," she said. "I am doing this bec

  • HEIRESS REBORN   LINES NOT TO CROSS

POV: DAMIENDaylight strips the night clean, but it doesn’t erase what happened. It just forces everything into sharp relief. By seven a.m., I have already sent three messages to the clinic’s legal counsel, flagged the patient files tied to Margot’s sister, and ordered a quiet audit of any data access logs for the past forty-eight hours. Nothing’s popped yet. But I know how people like Nathaniel move. They don't just knock on your door. They slither under it.I’m not just a surgeon. People like to think that’s all I am — clean hands, steady cuts, god complex and guilt buried under white coats and sterile light. But they forget something.I used to run Voss Medical Security, back when my father was still alive. Four private clinics. Three in the U.S., one in Zurich. Elite medicine, off-grid records, and clients who didn’t want to be seen — politicians with relapses, CEOs with breakdowns, survivors in hiding. I learned how to scrub identities the same way I scrubbed blood from my glove

  • HEIRESS REBORN   HEARTBEAT CONFESSION 2

POV: ALINA / KAIAThe corridor is glass and moonlight and just quiet enough to make me feel like maybe I am allowed to fall apart without consequence. I lean against the cool panel, breathing hard, arms folded across my chest like that will stop the tremble starting in my elbows. I haven’t said anything since Damien brought me here. Not really. Not the things that matter. He is behind me, maybe five feet back. Not pushing, not filling the silence. Just... waiting. Like he always does. Like he is not afraid of how messy I am underneath all the steel I pretend to wear.Damien doesn’t speak. He walks beside me, one hand behind my back like I might fall again. I won’t. I can’t. Not in front of him.But I already did. It’s strange, the way the body folds in on itself when you remember what it means to be helpless. Not metaphorically. Not emotionally. Physically. Just bones and silence and being reduced to nothing. The flashback still itches at my skin. Sasha’s voice laughing behind a close

  • HEIRESS REBORN   HEARTBEAT CONFESSION

POV: ALINA / KAIAIt starts with a knock. Not on my door, but on my mind. The kind that isn’t real at first. Just a pulse. A feeling. Like something has shifted.I am in my home office with the lights of and the blinds half-drawn, the glow of my laptop screen cutting across the dark like a scalpel. I haven’t slept in thirty hours. I haven’t blinked in five. I’m still rereading Margot’s message."He moved on Ruth."Ruth.Her sister Her family.I read it again. Out loud this time. But my voice sounds foreign. Fragile. The words blur, not from tears. From the pressure behind my eyes. Something in my chest twists and locks.Theo is across the room, arms crossed, quiet. He has been watching me. Not like a friend. Like a soldier waiting for the order to strike.I speak first."Tell me everything."He steps forward, but slowly. Like he knows I might shatter if he rushes it."It was quiet. Calculated. Rourke’s signature, mostly digital. They tripped one of our buried security protocols, an

  • HEIRESS REBORN   COUNTER-PRESSURE 2

POV: MARGOT8:12 a.m.I don’t change out of my robe. I’m still barefoot when I sit down at the dining table with a second cup of coffee and pull out my personal burner. One call. One number.Angela Crowley. She is not just the regional SEC director. She is a careerist, media-friendly, and if I put her in the right room at the right time, with the right optics, she becomes untouchable. And that’s exactly what I need. Not for me.For Ruth. The phone rings three times before her assistant picks up."Ms. Dewitt," he says, sharp. "I was told you might reach out.""Good. Let her know I will be at Primrose on 5th at 12:30 p.m. today. I’m reserving the back window table. I want this public. I want it documented. And I want it loud."He hesitates, but then: "I’ll confirm with her in ten.""Make it five.”I end the call and before I can take a sip of my coffee, it pings again.Alina."Your call last night triggered Theo’s alerts. Rourke. Former CIA. Red-level threat. Confirmed hit on Ruth’s loc

  • HEIRESS REBORN   COUNTER-PRESSURE

POV: MARGOTIt’s 12:41 a.m. when my phone rings but I don’t pick up right away. I am lying in bed, half-asleep, staring at the ceiling and pretending not to be waiting for the universe to kick start again. But when I see the caller ID, I sit up."Ruth."Her name lights up my screen, and a sick feeling clamps down on my gut before I even answer. My sister never calls this late. Ever. She hates phones. Hates attention. The last time she rang me after midnight, it was about Mom’s stroke."Ruth? What's wrong?"Her voice shakes. “Someone broke in."I am already throwing the blanket off. “What? Are you okay? Were you hurt?""No. I wasn’t home, I was at the volunteer center. I came back and… my place is a disaster. Not ransacked like a robbery. Just... weird. Creepy. They didn’t take anything, M. They just tore things up. Photos. My journals. That picture of us from the boardwalk? Ripped. Drawers dumped out. The floorboards were... pried. What the hell is going on? What have you gotten me in
