Beneath me.

Inside the walls.

I froze.

My mother stood only a few feet away, watching me with tears in her eyes.

“Twenty-eight,” the voice repeated.

Then the black circle on the wall pulsed.

Once.

Twice.

Like a heartbeat.

I looked at my mother.

“What does that mean?”

She didn't answer.

“Mom.”

Her lips parted, but whatever she wanted to say seemed to frighten her more than it frightened me.

Daniel’s Betrayal:My father's voice came from behind the door.“Ava…”I couldn't breathe.I hadn't heard that voice in years. Not in dreams. Not in memories. Not even in the fragments the Trials had given back to me.My father was dead.At least, that's what I'd always been told.I turned slowly toward my mother. She was crying.“Mom?”She didn't answer.“Is that Dad?”Her lips trembled.“Ava…”“Is that him?”She closed her eyes. That was enough.I stepped toward the door.My hand reached for the handle.“Don't.”My mother's voice stopped me.“Why?”She looked at me.“Because your father isn't what you remember.”I laughed bitterly.“I don't remember him at all.”A silence followed. Then the door behind me exploded open.Daniel stumbled into the room.Blood covered his forehead.Vivienne was behind him, barely standing.“Ava!”I ran toward them.“What happened?”“The Board breached the floor,” Daniel said.Vivienne grabbed my arm.“We need to leave.”“No.”I looked at the Seventh Doo

What Ava Is:I couldn't move. The words kept repeating inside my head.Elizabeth wasn't the first one to come back.I stared at the woman in front of me.“Then who was?”She didn't answer.“Who?”Her expression softened.“You're asking the wrong question.”I wiped the tears from my face.“Then give me the right one.”She smiled faintly.“What happened before you were born?”My stomach twisted.“I don't know.”“You were never supposed to.”She stood and walked toward the seven doors.I followed her.“What happened to me?”She stopped beside Door Seven.“You died.”“I know that.”“No.”She looked at me.“You died before you were born.”I stared at her.“That doesn't make sense.”“It will.”She placed her hand against the door. The wood immediately began to glow.Images appeared across its surface.A laboratory.Doctors.Machines.People in white coats.A young Elizabeth Blackthorn lying on a metal table.I stepped closer.“What am I looking at?”“The beginning.”The image changed.Eliza

The Seventh Room:The darkness inside the wall breathed.I don't know how else to describe it.It wasn't empty. It wasn't still. It felt alive.Like something on the other side was waiting for me.“Don't go in.”My mother's voice trembled behind me.I turned. She looked terrified. Not worried. Not afraid for me.Terrified.“Why?”She shook her head.“Because once you enter that room, there is no pretending anymore.”I glanced back at the opening.“What is it?”“The Seventh Room.”Daniel's expression changed.“You said it was destroyed.”“It was supposed to be.”Vivienne pushed herself away from the wall.“You knew about this?”My mother looked at her.“I knew it existed.”“What's inside?”My mother didn't answer. That was answer enough.I stepped closer.“Ava,” Daniel warned.I ignored him.Something was pulling me forward. Not physically.Something deeper.A feeling.Recognition.The moment I crossed the threshold, the temperature dropped. The room beyond was enormous.Much larger th

Daniel stood beside her, keeping an arm around her waist to support her.Blood had soaked through part of her shirt.“Vivienne needs a doctor,” Daniel said.My mother shook her head.“If she lea

The Woman in the Window:I couldn't move.My mother was standing in the window.Alive.Watching me.Smiling.For twenty-one years, I had believed she was gone.Dead.Another name on a grave.Another photograph I kept hidden because looking at it hurt too much. And now she was standing inside Blackthorn.Looking directly at me.My mother.I blinked. She was still there."Mom?"The word came out as barely more than a whisper.Daniel turned."What?"I pointed toward the building."Her."His face changed."What did you see?""My mother."Silence.Vivienne looked toward the window. The woman was gone. The room was empty."No."I shook my head."She was there."Daniel stepped closer."Ava...""I saw her.""I believe you."His voice was too serious. That frightened me more."You believe me?"He nodded."Because I've seen her too."My heart stopped."When?""Years ago."I stared at him."Why didn't you tell me?""Because I wasn't sure.""You saw our mother and didn't tell me?""I was seventee

The Final Key:"Vivienne!"She collapsed into my arms. For one terrifying second, I thought she was dead.Blood soaked through the side of her coat. Her eyes fluttered."Stay with me."I lowered her carefully against the wall."Please."Vivienne tried to speak.Nothing came out.Her father stood at the top of the stairs, watching us.Calm.Almost bored."You shot her."My voice shook with rage.He looked at Vivienne."She made her choice.""You shot your own daughter.""She stopped being my daughter the moment she betrayed the Board."I felt something inside me snap.I stood."You don't get to decide that."His eyes moved toward me."You still don't understand what you are.""I don't care."I stepped in front of Vivienne."You hurt her."His expression didn't change."Because she refused to complete her Trial.""What Trial?"He smiled."The same one you're about to complete."Behind me, the stone door groaned. It opened another few inches.Cold air rushed through the corridor. And so
