"Shall we?" Sean says and puts one hand on my shoulder as I look up into Betty's sad eyes, a tiny voice in my head screaming for me to jump into her arms, but I don't. It's better if things end this way.

Strangely, right before my very eyes, she glitches like a sonogram, fading away along with the room, my environment changing and Dylan's body disappearing, painfully revealing a shiny gold-colored tiled floor instead of the dirty brown it was before.

I lift my head and realize we're no longer in the room.

"Welcome to my home," Sean says gleefully, and I lift my head up a little, squinting my eyes and trying to adjust to the bright light. I gasp in surprise as I take in my new surroundings.

We're in the living room, a somewhat massive and luxurious living room, with cream and gold-colored cushions sitting beautifully close to the artfully emulsioned wall. It's painted cream with unique gold patterns and designs on it glittering from the shining light emanating from the very large cha

  • HIDDEN EDGES    Chapter 39

When I was young, I never really understood the meaning of death. I just knew it was the last thing that would happen to a person. Once, I thought it was a reward for wickedness, or something that happened only to old people and once they die, they go up into the sky and become stars. I wanted to be a star, but I didn't want to die. I was terrified of ceasing to exist and not being able to visit the beach or eat my favorite dessert or play tea party with my dolls. As I grew older, death wasn't the most terrifying thing anymore. It was the way people forget the dead and move on with their lives."You have to be happy and move on sweetie." I remember my mom once saying to a friend of hers who lost her husband to cancer. She took the advice, remarried and was happy. Why? I kept asking myself. Why is it this way? Time went by and life taught me there wasn't any other way to go about it. They're not completely forgotten, but life has to go on. And that's when I decided. I decided to live

  • HIDDEN EDGES    Chapter 38

"Hey." The soft whispers of a familiar masculine voice disturb my not so peaceful slumber. Trying to recollect my distorted memories, I open my eyes slowly adjusting them to the light and environment."You're awake." The voice comes again, clearer this time and I look beside me to see Sean, looking at me with so much concern and relief. That's when I remember all that happened and immediately, I try to scoot away from him in fear, afraid of what he might do to me."Hey." He says slowly like he's talking to a baby, "I won't hurt you." He tries to touch me, but I flinch on impulse, and he sighs, his slight smile falling completely as he retreats back and sits on the couch."Why did you do it?" he asks, and I'm lost for a second before realizing he was referring to the cuts. I look at my arm and see they are starting to close, three horizontal red lines incised in my left arm. They'll surely leave ugly scars, scars that'll forever remind me of these times. My pain, my hurt, my fears, my

The atmosphere immediately changes, a dark and fiery aura envelops the entire room, almost choking me as I stare wide eyed sitting on the ground in the dark.Sean gets down from the bed, the dim red light doing a great job in making his already intimidating features look even scarier as he advances towards me, looking directly at me."Why are you in here?" He stops right in front of me, his voice angry and dangerous, causing my heart to thump loudly. I open my mouth to say something but nothing comes out, my brain betraying me. He reaches down with one hand and raises me up by my neck till our eyes meet, mine red and bulgy while his red and angry, livid even."What did you see?" He half yells threateningly, and I cough painfully, struggling for breath and scratching his hand. My legs flailing and kicking as I feel my soul struggling to stay in my body. He keeps choking me and as the seconds tick by, my life ticks away. Painfully. A tear rolls down my cheek and immediately, he tosses m

  • HIDDEN EDGES    Chapter 36

"It's just a dream. It's just a dream." I chant to myself as I back away from the army of living dead people, zombies approaching me with long fangs and claws. Dylan and Jake leading the troop. I back away in fear, although fully aware it's just a dream. I close my eyes tightly and open them up again in hopes of finding myself back in my room, but hope isn't for someone like me.All too familiarly and startling, my back meets a dead end, colliding with a wall and misery all at once. Dylan's lips curve into a creepy smile, revealing brown crooked teeth and just then, they all jump at me, clawing at whatever skin their decaying hands could reach. The all too familiar smell of my blood fills my nostrils and yet again, my infamous screams, pleading for help that would never come my way, hurts my throat.Panting heavily, I open my eyes and sit up in fear, switching on the light from the new lamp I found in my room, but soon calming down in the realization that it was just a dream. A night

What?!!!!. Did he just say betrothed?? My eyes are fixed on his face, finding answers to no avail as he only keeps a straight face with no emotion or expression whatsoever. I want to scream and ask for an explanation, but his words come back to me and I reluctantly keep shut. He didn't ask me to say anything. Fuck. I can feel everyone looking at me, waiting for something, but I stay put, not even having the guts to look upon any of their faces."What?!" Miranda says with shock and disgust laced around her voice, "Your betrothed?" That's impossible, Sean.""No, it's not," he responds."She's a human." The man beside me speaks up, sounding equally irritated, and Sean's fist tighten even more under the table. He's dead nervous but manages to control his countenance, not giving off any sign of weakness."And your point is?" he says again, starting to sound angered."My point?" He says in disbelief, "You of all people know exactly what my point is.""You can't get married to a human, Sea

  • HIDDEN EDGES    Chapter 34

My heart races fast as I stand in front of this mirror wearing the dress and shoes Sean got me with my hair packed in a ponytail. The black circles around my eyes are so evident, but no more than the fact that I've lost a lot of weight. I almost couldn't recognize myself when I first came in before I took my bath. A long relaxing bath, although I couldn't close my eyes for fear of what I might see.I wonder what Sean has planned out and who the people I'm meeting are. Are they the ones that'd determine what to be done with me? I'm so confused and indifferent as well right now.I wouldn't fight for my life, nor would I ask for an easy death. If my death is what this is all about, then I can't wait to meet these people. Sighing, I leave the bathroom and go into the room to find Sean standing by the window and looking through it in a black suit. His shoulders look really broad and even the thick material of his suit can't hide his strong biceps.Sensing my presence, he turns around, an
