AMARA'S POV***

Davina picked the restaurant. Of course she did.

The place was warm and classy, the kind of place that smelled like grilled meat, with soft music playing in the background like it was trying not to disturb anybody's peace.

I walked in and immediately spotted her. She waved so aggressively it almost embarrassed me.

“Amara,” she called.

I smiled and hurried over. The moment I got close, she stood up and hugged me tightly like I'd been gone for a year.

“Girl…” she pulled back, holding my shoulders. Her eyes scanned my outfit slowly, “Look at you.”

“What?” I asked, sitting down.

Davina sat too, still staring. “No, no, no. Don't ‘what’ me. You look… expensive.

I scoffed. “I don't know what you're talking about.”

“You know exactly what I'm talking about,” she said. Pointing her finger at me like she was about to arrest me. “Your skin is glowing. Your hair is laid. Your nails are clean. Even your aura is looking like… CEO’s side chick.

I almost choked. “Davina!”

She burst out laughing, leaning forward on the table. “I'm not even joking. You look like you've been living a soft life.”

I shook my head. “Soft life where? I've been stressed.

“Stressed people don't glow,” she replied. “Stressed people look like they've been fighting for their life. You look like you've been eating steak and flying first class.”

My mouth opened and closed. Because she wasn't wrong.

The waiter approached and handed us the menus, and Davina barely glanced at hers before she smiled sweetly and said, “Let me get the shrimp pasta and a glass of wine.”

Then she looked at me. “What do you want?”

I scanned the menu. “I'll just take the what she ordered.”

Amara smiled, mischievously and said. “Bills on you.”

“Of course. The bills would be on me.”

She laughed. “I plan on eating every food they serve here.”

I shooked my head. “ You wouldn't dare.”

She winked. “Watch me.”

And we both laughed.

When the waiter left, Davina leaned forward, resting her chin on her palm, eyes shining.

“So…” she dragged the word out. “How have you been? Like… got real.”

I didn't answer immediately. Because for real? Fir real, I don't know.

“I've been okay,” I said finally.

Davina rolled her eyes. “That's a lie.”

I laughed softly. “It's not a lie. It's just complicated.”

“Mmmm,” she nodded slowly, the way she always did when she was about to start interrogating me. “Let's start from the beginning. You disappeared. You stopped replying properly. You became busy. You became… mysterious.”

I stared at her. “You're exaggerating.”

“I'm not,” she insisted. “You even started typing like a rich girl.”

I frowned. “Typing like a rich girl?”

“Yes!” She said, “Before you used to text “lol’ and ‘lmao.’ Now you text ‘Noted’ and ‘understood.’ Like who are you?”

I burst out laughing, and Davina joined in, shaking her head dramatically.

“Okay,” I admitted, still smiling. “Work has been…intense.”

Davina's eyes narrowed. And I knew exactly what was coming.

“So…” she said again, voice suddenly softer. “How is your boss?”

I stared at her. I didn't even know why that question made my stomach twist.

“He's fine,” I said, reaching for my water. Davina watched me like she didn't believe me.

“Fine?”

“Yes.”

“Amara,” she said, slowly. “Don't piss me off.”

I sighed. “Davina…”

“No,” she cut me off. “Because every time I ask about that man, you suddenly forget English.”

I rubbed my forehead, already feeling mubafce heat up.

“It's just work,” I said.

Davina leaned back in her chair. “ Okay, so tell me about your work.”

I hesitated.

Then I started talking.

At first, it was simple things. The schedule. The meetings. The way the office was structured. The way everyone feared him. The way he walked into the room and the whole atmosphere shifted like electricity had entered.

Davina listened quietly, nodding. Then she smiled.

“So basically… “she said, “you're in love.”

I almost threw my glass at her. “Davina!”

She screamed with laughter. “I'm sorry! I'm sorry! But listen to yourself!”

“I'm not in love,” I insisted.

“Then why are you blushing?”

“I'm not blushing.”

“You're blushing!”

I groaned and covered my face. “This is why I didn't want to come out with you.”

Davina leaned forward again, voice lowering like she was about to tell me a secret.

“Amara,” she said. “Does he stress you?”

“Yes.”

“Does he confuse you?”

“Yes.”

“Does he make you angry?”

“You have no idea.”

“Does he make you feel things you don't want to feel?”

I didn't answer.

Davina smiled slowly. “Exactly.”

I dropped my hands and stared at her.

“You don't even know what you're saying.”

“Oh, I know,” she replied confidently. “I know because I know you. And you don't talk about people this much unless they're in your head.”

I opened my mouth to deny it, but my throat tightened.

Because she wasn't wrong. And I hated that she wasn't. The food arrived and fot a moment it saved me. The smell alone made me relax.

Davina immediately dug into her pasta like she hadn't eaten all day. I tasted my food and sighed happily.

“This is good,” I murmured.

We ate for a while and the conversation drifted.

Davina told me about how her mother had been nagging her to find a man, about how her landlord was raising rent again like he wanted her to start selling her kidneys.

I laughed until my stomach hurt.

And for the first time in a long time…I felt normal.

Then Davina’s voice softened.

“How’s your mum?” she asked quietly.

My hand paused mid-air. I swallowed and forced myself to keep my voice steady.

“She’s… still there,” I said. “Still fighting.”

Davina reached across the table and squeezed my hand gently.

“You’re strong,” she said.

I shook my head. “I don’t have a choice.”

“I should go see her sometime,” she said. “When I'm less busy.”

I nodded.

When we were done eating, Davina leaned back with a satisfied sigh.

“Okay,” she said. “This was good.”

“It was,” I agreed.

Davina stood up, She stepped closer and linked her arm with mine.

We walked out of the restaurant together, the night air cool against my skin.

And as Davina talked about her plans for the

weekend, laughing and complaining like she always did…

My thoughts drifted to Dorian. I shook my head to focus on what Davina was saying.

Tomorrow's another day to face Dorian.

  • HIRED AND WANTED    Chapter 57

DORIAN'S POV***I’d kept Amara's birthday in mind for a while. Not because it was some casual note in a file, but because she’d submitted the date once, and for some reason it stuck. Earlier in the day, I’d called her to my office through the intercom. She appeared, polite, professional, expectant.“You can leave early today,” I said, keeping my tone casual. Her brows lifted. “Uh… okay?”“I’ll have a dress sent to you,” I continued. “Get ready tonight. Dinner.”“Dinner?” she asked, clearly surprised.“Just… because,” I replied, giving nothing else away. She nodded, still processing, and left.Once she was gone, I picked up the phone and called Davina. I got her number from the information I asked my secretary for on Amara.“Hello?” she answered.“Hello,” I said. “This is Dorian Wellington.“Okay….” She said. “I know alot of Dorians, so which one might you be?”“Your best friend Boss.” I stated.“Ohhh,” she said. “I hope she's okay. Right?”“Yeah, she's well.” I continued. “ It's Amar

  • HIRED AND WANTED    Chapter 56

AMARA’S POVI didn’t know how to act. Because I wasn’t used to this kind of attention. I wasn’t used to walking into a place and seeing people waiting for me, smiling like I mattered. And I definitely wasn’t used to someone like Dorian Wellington being the reason behind it.We all sat around the long dining table, plates already arranged, wine glasses sparkling under soft lights. The restaurant wasn’t crowded. It felt like the whole space had been reserved just for us, and that alone made my stomach twist.Davina sat beside me, grinning like she had personally planned the entire universe. Her sister and some childhood friends were there too, looking overdressed and excited. Jayden was on the other side, already acting like he belonged. And Dorian…Dorian sat across from me.Calm. Quiet. Composed, like this was nothing. But every time I lifted my eyes, I caught him watching me.Not staring like a creep.Just… watching. Like he was making sure I was okay. Like he was waiting for me to s

  • HIRED AND WANTED    Chapter 55

AMARA’S POV***I went home early, but instead of relaxing, my anxiety followed me into my apartment like a shadow.I kept checking the time.6pm.6:30pm.7pm.Then my doorbell rang. My heart jumped like I was expecting trouble. I opened the door and found a delivery man holding a large package.“Amara Harpers?” he asked.“Yes.”He handed it to me, collected my signature, and left.I closed the door slowly and stared at the box like it might explode. I carried it into my living room and opened it.Inside was a dress. Red. Strapless. Body con. Long.It looked expensive enough to pay my rent for the next six months. There was also a pair of Louis Vuitton red bottom heels, shiny, elegant, terrifying and a small black D&G purse with gold details.I sat on my couch, holding the fabric between my fingers. My chest tightened. This wasn’t normal. This wasn’t “boss taking PA to dinner.”This was… something else. And I didn’t know what to do with it.By 7:45pm, I was dressed. The dress hugged me

  • HIRED AND WANTED    Chapter 54

AMARA’S POVMy alarm rang like it always did—annoying, loud, and completely uninterested in the fact that it was my birthday.I groaned, rolled over, and slapped my phone until it shut up. For a few seconds, I just lay there, staring at the ceiling, trying to convince myself to get up.Then my phone buzzed again.I grabbed it with sleepy eyes, expecting a reminder or an email, but it was a message.Davina: HAPPY BIRTHDAY MY LOVE!!! 🎉❤️Another message followed immediately.Cynthia: Happy birthday Amara. May this year be kind to you. Then another. And another.I blinked at the screen, my lips tugging into a small smile. It felt… nice. But it didn’t feel like some big moment. Not the way birthdays used to feel when I was younger. Now it just felt like a date on the calendar that everyone else remembered more than I did.I dropped the phone on my bed and sat up.“Another year,” I muttered, more to myself than anything.I dragged myself out of bed, took a quick shower, dressed up, and ti

  • HIRED AND WANTED    Chapter 53

DORIAN'S POV***I scrambled backward on the bed, forcing myself to sit upright, hands raised like I’d been caught committing a crime.“No—what? God, no.”Amara pulled the blanket up quickly, wrapping it around her body like armor. She sat up too, staring at me with wide eyes.“I’d never do that,” I said quickly. “Never.”She blinked, still shocked.“I woke up like that,” I continued, trying to sound calm even though my heart was racing. “I swear. I didn’t… I didn’t do anything. I woke up and I was lying on you. I tried to move, but you were—” I stopped myself before I said wrapped around me like a snake.I cleared my throat.“You were holding me,” I finished, more carefully. “So I didn’t want to wake you. You barely slept last night.”Amara stared at me for a long moment. Then she exhaled slowly.“I believe you,” she said, quieter.Relief hit me so hard I almost closed my eyes. She stood up, the blanket still wrapped around her like a dress. She reached down and picked up her clothes

  • HIRED AND WANTED    Chapter 52

DORIAN’S POVI woke up slowly, like my body wasn’t ready to admit the night was over. The fever was gone or at least, it wasn’t drowning me anymore. My head still felt heavy, but the crushing weakness had eased. I could breathe without feeling like my lungs were full of fire. For the first time in hours, I felt… normal.Almost.I shifted, trying to get comfortable again, and my cheek brushed against something soft. Warm.My hand moved too, instinctively tightening around whatever it was.Soft again. Comforting.I frowned slightly, still half asleep, my eyes closed. Whatever it was, it felt too good to let go of. I tightened my hold without thinking, letting myself drift for a second. Then it hit me. Amara. My eyes snapped open. And my entire body froze. I was lying on her.My face was pressed against her stomach, my arm wrapped around her waist, and my hand—God help me—my hand was gripping her breast like my life depended on it.Her own hand rested on top of mine, relaxed, like she’d
