I woke up and lay there for a while.

Tomorrow had arrived.

Damien had said tomorrow the way he said everything he had decided—flat and final. Not a promise so much as a statement of fact.

And I had said okay because okay was what I said when something landed and I needed time to sit with it before I could figure out what I actually felt.

I got up, showered, and stood in front of the mirror longer than usual.

Then I went to the kitchen.

He was already there.

Not at his desk. Not in his off

I woke up to Noah kissing my cheek. “Good morning.” I opened my eyes and smiled. “You’ve been awake for a while.” “Maybe.” “What were you doing?” “Looking at you.” “You do that every morning.” “I like looking at you.” I reached for him and pulled him closer. “And I like waking up next to you.” He smiled. “You’re getting very romantic.” “I’ve had a good teacher.” He laughed and kissed me again. “We’re going to be late.” “For what?” “Breakfast.” “Caleb can survive without us for ten minutes.” “You don’t know Caleb.” “That is true.” He tried to get out of bed. I held him tighter. “Damien.” “Five minutes.” “You said that yesterday.” “And you stayed.” “Because I love you.” I kissed him. “That usually works.” “It shouldn’t.” “But it does.” He finally pulled away. “Come on, fiancé.” I smiled. “I like hearing that.” “I know.” He disappeared into the bathroom while I got out of bed. For a moment, I stood near the window. The curtains were open. I could s

The next few weeks were calmer. Eli’s medication had been adjusted, and the weakness didn’t return. He still got tired, but he was learning when to rest instead of pretending he could do everything. I was trying to do the same. Caleb had also decided that Eli’s university plans were now his responsibility. “You need to choose a course,” he told Eli one afternoon. “I know.” “What are you choosing?” “I haven’t decided.” “You should choose computers.” “Why?” “Because you can fix my game.” Eli laughed. “That isn’t how university works.” “It should be.” I looked up from my laptop. “Leave your brother alone.” “I’m helping.” “You’ve been helping for three hours.” “Exactly.” Eli smiled. “I think I’m leaning toward computer science.” Caleb nodded. “Good.” “You’re not even going to ask why?” “No.” “Why not?” “Because I already decided.” I laughed. “You two are ridiculous.” That evening, Damien and I were sitting on the balcony when Eli came outside. “You’re both

I woke up before Noah the next morning. For once, there was no alarm going off and no urgent phone call waiting for us. Noah was still asleep beside me. I looked at him for a moment before getting out of bed. My vision had been improving slowly over the past few weeks. The changes were small, but I noticed them more often now. The room was clearer when I woke up. I could make out the shape of the curtains and the chair beside the window without having to rely entirely on memory. I still had difficult days. I still had headaches. But I was seeing more than I had before. I went downstairs and started making coffee. Noah appeared about twenty minutes later. “You’re awake already?” “I’ve been awake for a while.” He walked over and kissed me. “You didn’t wake me.” “You looked comfortable.” “You’re learning.” “I’ve always been considerate.” “No. You’re becoming considerate.” I handed him his coffee. He took it and smiled. “Thank you.” We stood in the kitchen for a few

Eli was doing better. Not completely better, but enough that the doctors were comfortable with him being at home. He still got tired easily, and there were days when he needed to rest more than usual, but the new treatment plan seemed to be helping. I was trying not to count every good day. It was harder than it sounded. That afternoon, I found Eli in the living room with Caleb, both of them arguing over a football game. “You’re cheating,” Caleb said. “I’m not.” “You changed something.” “I didn’t.” “You did.” Eli looked at me. “Tell him.” I looked at the television. “Whoever is winning gets to choose the next game.” Caleb frowned. “That doesn’t answer the question.” “It wasn’t supposed to.” Eli laughed. Caleb threw a cushion at him. “Hey!” “You deserved it.” “You’re supposed to be sick.” Eli stared at him. “What does that have to do with anything?” Caleb shrugged. “I don’t know.” I laughed. Eli shook his head. “You’re weird.” “You’re older.” “Exactly.”

By the time we got home, Eli seemed completely back to himself. Caleb was already in the living room, looking for something to watch. “Can we watch a movie?” Noah dropped his keys on the table. “You’ve asked that every night this week.” “Because you keep saying no.” “I haven’t said no.” “You said we could watch one tomorrow.” “That’s not the same thing.” “It is to me.” Eli walked past them. “Let him choose.” Noah looked at him. “You’re encouraging him.” “I’ve just spent several hours in a hospital. I deserve to watch whatever I want.” Caleb pointed at him. “See?” Eli laughed. Noah shook his head. “Fine. One movie.” Caleb immediately grabbed the remote. “I’m choosing.” “You always choose.” “Because I’m good at it.” “You picked the same movie twice last weekend.” “It was a good movie.” I sat on the sofa and watched them argue over the television. Noah eventually took the remote from Caleb. “Everyone gets one suggestion.” “Mine first.” “No.” “Why?” “Becau

Eli called me just after lunch. “I need you to come get me.” I sat up straighter. “Where are you?” “At home.” “What happened?” “Nothing serious.” “Eli.” He sighed. “I’ve been feeling dizzy since this morning. It got worse when I stood up.” I was already reaching for my keys. “Did you tell anyone?” “I told Mrs. Margaret.” “Good. Stay where you are. I’m coming.” I ended the call and grabbed my bag. Damien looked up from his laptop. “What happened?” “Eli’s dizzy.” He closed the laptop. “I’ll come with you.” “You have work.” “I’ll deal with it later.” There was no point arguing. We left together. When we arrived, Eli was sitting on the sofa with a glass of water beside him. Caleb was next to him, looking worried. “You scared me,” Caleb said when he saw me. I walked straight over to Eli. “How long have you felt like this?” “Since this morning.” “And you waited until now to tell me?” “I thought it would go away.” I crouched in front of him. “Are you still diz

The first time Damien Cole touched me, I couldn’t breathe. His hand found my jaw in the dark, certain, deliberate. His thumb pressed just below my lip and he tilted my face up toward his, and even though I knew he couldn’t see me, it felt like being seen more completely than I had ever been seen

I knew he was nervous before he sat down. Most people were nervous around me. I’d stopped finding it interesting years ago. Nervousness made people stupid and stupid people wasted my time, and the one thing I did not have patience for was the wasting of my time. I heard it in the way he walked. S

I knew the sound of every person who had ever worked in this penthouse. Mrs. Hale walked like she was always running late, short quick steps, always slightly rushed even when there was no reason to rush. My previous assistant, Marcus, dragged his left foot slightly, a habit he was probably not ev

I packed everything I owned into one bag. That should have taken longer than forty minutes. It didn’t. Caleb sat on the edge of the bare mattress and watched me fold the pale blue shirt. “How long will you be gone?” he asked. “I’ll visit every Sunday,” I said. “That’s my day off.” “Every Sunda
