Kasimir’s POV

The elevator doors closed on Vespera, cutting off the sharp, stubborn scent of her lavender perfume and the quiet fury showing from her pale grey eyes.

Even as the silver doors sealed her out of my sight, her presence lingered in the clinical expanse of my office like smoke after a gun blast. Most people trembled when I stepped into their space. Most executives stammered, their eyes darting toward the exits as they tried to calculate how much of their skin they would have to peel off to leave the room alive.

Not Vespera von Falkenrath.

She had stood her ground, her spine as rigid as a bayonet, looking straight into my mismatched eyes while her whole world crumbled into dust beneath her polished boots. Even with her collarbone pale and exposed that thin, delicate scar teasing my fingers she hadn't flinched. She had signed her life away to a beast, holding her head high enough to pretend she was making a sovereign trade.

I reached out to the low glass table and picked up the heavy silver fountain pen she had dropped when the intercom flashed red.

The metal was still warm from her touch. I turned it slowly between my rough fingers, tracing the slight weight of it. There was a dangerous, fascinating fire in that woman, a quiet, burning steel that made my blood run hot in a way it hadn't in nearly a decade. She thought she was a victim walking into a cage to save her sister. She thought she had traded three years of her freedom to keep the Falkenrath name from drowning.

She had no idea the water was already over her head.

A quiet seam in the dark wood paneling behind my desk slid open with a faint pneumatic hiss.

Jonas, my head of security, stepped into the light. He looked like what he was a former commander in the Kommando Spezialkräfte, a man built like a concrete pillar with a rough scar stretching from his left temple down to his throat. But right now, his eyes held a rare, strong tension.

"The fake transport was hit exactly where you predicted, Herr Adler," Jonas said, his voice low and grating. "The mountain pass near Mittenwald. Two black SUVs jammed the ambulance off the road, breached the rear doors, and removed the medical hospital bed."

I didn't turn around. I kept my gaze fixed on the heavy silver pen, feeling the lingering heat of her skin on the metal.

"And the asset inside?" I asked softly.

"The hospital bed was weighted with sandbags and an active signal transmitter," Jonas replied, stepping up to the edge of the mahogany desk. "The actual clinic transport carrying Fräulein Liesea crossed the Swiss Austrian border forty minutes ago via the secondary route. She is already safe in the underground wing of the Alpine Ridge estate under heavy guard. She hasn't been touched."

A cold, dark satisfaction settled in the back of my throat.

"They fell for it," I murmured.

"Hook, line, and sinker," Jonas confirmed. "Whoever ordered the hit had live access to the medical transfer records registered under your private corporate account. The intercept team thought they were grabbing your wife's ultimate vulnerability. They have no idea they just hauled three hundred pounds of tracking equipment into their own safehouse."

"Good," I rasped, dropping the silver pen onto the smooth leather surface of the signed contract.

I looked down at her handwriting. Vespera von Falkenrath. Sleek, sharp letters, pressed so hard into the paper that the nib had nearly torn the parchment.

She believed this contract was her absolute binding sentence. She believed the terms of maritime trust law and corporate co-sovereignty locked her to my side for thirty-six months.

What she didn't know what no one outside of a three man legal circle in Liechtenstein knew was that under Paragraph 14 of the International Maritime Code, any contract signed under the coming threat of insolvent asset sale is entirely void ab initio. Null. not legally valid from the very second the ink hit the paper.

I hadn't drawn up this document to trap her in a marriage. I had drawn it up because the rat inside my council was watching my personal legal assets, waiting for me to establish a permanent financial link to an external entity. By signing this fake contract, Vespera had just become the brightest, most strong piece of bait in the entire European shipping corridor.

Every shadow lurking in the offices, every betrayer hiding behind old family crests, would now turn their scope directly toward her. They would move to tear her down to strike at me. And when they moved, they would step straight into the trap I had spent two years constructing.

"She's going to hate you when she finds out," Jonas said quietly, watching me trace the edge of her signature with the tip of my thumb. "She isn't a passive socialite, Kasimir. She caught the flaw in the audit report within ten seconds. If she realizes you used her as live bait."

"She won't find out," I cut him off, my tone dropping into an icy register that made Jonas instantly stiffen. "Not until the blood is cleared from the snow."

I picked up the black leather folder, closing it over her signature.

"Prepare the helicopter," I commanded, standing up to my full height and adjusting the dark cuffs of my suit jacket. "We move to the Alpine estate immediately. If the rat thinks they have stolen her sister, they will strike at Vespera before the sun sets."

"Understood, Herr Adler." Jonas bowed his head, turning back toward the hidden entrance.

I walked to the floor-to-ceiling glass, looking down at the rainy streets of Munich eighty floors below. Somewhere down there, Vespera was stepping into the backseat of my armored sedan, her chest tight with a terror I had deliberately manufactured to keep her close.

I touched my neck, feeling the dark ink of the family crest beneath my collar.

"Run as fast as you want, Vespera," I whispered against the cold glass, my breath clouding the image of the city below. "You're already in the lion's mouth."

Behind me, the terminal on my desk flickered.

A quiet, automatic ping echoed through the empty office. I glanced back over my shoulder.

A single protected message had just bypassed my private firewall, routed directly from an unknown server inside my own Alpine Ridge estate.

The bait is in the net. Destroy the girl before he arrives.

Vespera’s POV The iron gates of the Falkenrath estate groaned under the weight of the autumn wind as I pushed them open.Three hours after signing Kasimir’s cold, binding contract in his glass tower in Munich, I stood in the wild courtyard of my childhood home. Rain poured over the falling apart limestone lions flanking the entrance, washing away the last false hopes of the life I used to own.Inside, the grand hall was already dying. Sheets of heavy linen covered the antique furniture like shrouds. Dust danced in the slivers of gray light filtering through the high tall windows. Every shadow seemed to hum with the faint memory of my father’s quick footsteps, the scrape of his fountain pen, the low rumble of his laugh before the debts ate him alive from the inside out.I squeezed my eyes shut, holding back the burning sting behind my eyelids, and marched up the curved oak staircase toward Liesea’s room. She was sitting up in her canopy bed, wrapped in a thick cashmere shawl, her smal

Vespera’s POV The word echoed in the vast, clinical silence of the penthouse, heavy as an anvil.Murdered.My lungs locked. The gray light filtering through the rain streaked windows seemed to dim, casting long, bruised shadows across the polished concrete floor. My father hadn't died of a failing heart. The suspicion that had been a dark, quiet seed in the back of my brain suddenly burst into terrifying bloom."You’re lying," I rasped, though the certainty in Kasimir’s voice made the words taste like ash on my tongue. "You’re using his death to corner me."Kasimir didn't flinch. He walked slowly back to the dark mahogany desk, his movements infuriatingly calm, and picked up a heavy fountain pen crafted from black resin and silver."I don't need to lie to corner you, Vespera," he said, his gravelly voice cutting through the thick air. "Your family’s ruin was engineered with terrifying precision. The heart failure was induced by a synthetic digitalis compound that leaves no trace in a

Vespera’s POV The rain had not stopped by eight the next morning. It slicked the tinted glass appearance of the Adler Global Tower, turning the eighty-story tower into a pillar of dark mirror and steel rising out of Munich’s financial quarter.Standing on the stone plaza outside, I smoothed the lapels of my well fitted charcoal coat. It was one of the last high end suits remaining in my clothes, armor woven from fine wool, worn to disguise the hollow panic eating through my stomach. Beneath the fabric, my skin was damp, my heart beating at an uneven, punishing tempo.I didn't have a legal team behind me. I didn't have a single ally left in this city. All I had was the black cardstock folded in my leather portfolio and the strong, protective instinct that kept me moving forward for Liesea.I stepped through the revolving glass doors. The lobby was a huge hall of brushed steel, black marble, and absolute silence. Security guards dressed in dark, unbadged uniforms stood posted at every

Vespera’s POV The record didn’t lie. I rubbed my eyes again and again, but the numbers was still there, staring back at me through the faded ink.Forty-two million euros.I traced the harsh, red marked digits at the bottom of the audit report, my thumb scraping against the paper. It wasn’t just a deficit, it was an execution order. Three months ago, the Falkenrath name was known for Munich’s most prestigious luxury estates, large Bavarian manors, restored medieval villas, and glass layer penthouses overlooking the enormous garden. Today, it was as hollow as ever stripped bare by debts I hadn't even known existed until my father’s heart suddenly gave out at his desk.Heart failure, the coroner had declared with a practiced, sympathetic tilt of his head. But hearts don't just fail overnight without a history of illness. And men like my father, obsessive, careful, cautious to a fault don't quietly sign away every asset, property deed, and reserve trust fund to shell companies registere
