Chapter Ten
Kevin: “Sit her up to ease breathing and guide her!” I knew it was the doctor and nurse coming so I pulled back and quickly went to hold the other nurse who was struggling to get back on her feet and escape. “Alright, doc.” The other nurse responded as she rushed to the bed. Harshly, I grabbed the lady's hair and pulled her up while the nurse gently helped Mikaela sit upright to make her breathing stable. “You bitch! Who do you think you are?” I spat, my grip tightening even more on her hair. She winced, wrinkles gathering at the corner of her eyes. “Trust me, you'll lose your job, your certificate and everything that makes you a nurse.” “I sincerely apologize.” The doctor's voice interrupted. I tilted my head, shooting him a death stare as he stepped closer. “Apologize? What would have happened if I wasn't here earlier? She would have murdered her. A nurse stabbing a patient who just got out of coma, what do you think that would do on the name of your hospital?” “I apologize. Our nurses are not trained in this manner, this is a big mistake we'll ensure she regrets. I would like this to stay between the five of us in this room.” He pleaded, grabbing the edges of his coat firmly and pulling them closer together to cover his shirt. I didn't respond. I felt so much rage that for some reason, my mind yearned to make everyone know about this incident to teach the hospital a lesson. He pursed his lips. “Please. Even if we have to bring in a discount on the patient, we would be glad. As long as this stays hidden” I shook my head lightly. “That's not necessary. Just do all you can to cancel her.” I pulled her forward, closer to the doctor's view. His eyes darted to her face and he nodded before his gaze bounced back to me. But only for a split second. He glanced at her again, his nod stiffening all of a sudden. That was when his brows furrowed in confusion. He stretched his hand, slicking back all the strands of hair away from her face. She grabbed his hand, hindering him from touching her but he quickly slapped her hands away and snatched her ID. His eyes widened. “Is anything wrong?” I asked. “We don't know this woman. I don't recognize her. I know every nurse and doctor in this department but she doesn't look familiar.” He whispered, pressing the clip to detach the ID from the lanyard. “What?” I questioned, puzzled. He pressed his lips into a thin line as his grip tightened on the ID. “I know this name, Casey. But this isn't nurse Casey. I can swear it isn't her. Look at the photo.” He turned the ID to me and indeed, the lady in the image looked nothing like the one I was holding. “She doesn't work here?” I asked. “She does not. She must have used the badge to pass badge scanning and get in without anyone noticing!” “She must have been sent here to spy or something. No professional nurse thinks of giving a coma patient solid food. Whoever sent her did a clean job, to be sincere.” Right after speaking, he walked towards the door without turning back until he exited the ward. “Who on earth sent this bitch?” I mumbled under my breath though I was sure she heard me. She didn't respond, just as expected. Her response didn't matter anyway because either way, she would still get kicked out of her career or locked up for unprofessionalism, impersonation, and assault. The door opened and two hefty men approached. From their dress code, I could tell they were securities. “We'll take it from here sir,” One of them reassured. I nodded, letting go of her. There was no way she could escape anyway. I glanced at the nurse who was with Mikaela. She attempted to lay Mikaela back down but she was refusing to relax. I bit my bottom lip desperately, moving towards them. “You have to rest.” I reminded her, rubbing her head gently, my palm gliding down her hair. I pulled her in gently, resting her head on my abdomen. “You'll be fine. Trust me, I'll be right here.” I threw my head back, still rubbing her head. She whimpered, that's what I thought until I felt hot moisture dampen my shirt. I lowered my gaze, concern etched on my face. “You'll be fine. I promise.” She pulled away, looking up at me, her cheeks wet. “I'm scared of this place. I just want to leave.” She moaned. God damn. Her voice. Her eyes. The way she speaks. The way she looks at me. Even in their vulnerable state, I just can't help it. I want to make her feel safe but everything about her makes me unable to control my thoughts. I let out a sigh. The nurse chirped in, “You can't leave now. You aren't supposed to be out of bed yet. Your brain shouldn't be this active yet, but I guess due to the full medical care you got while in coma, your brain responds more quickly than it should. At this moment, she's meant to be trying to squeeze my finger as a test, not trying to eat by herself, at least not before the speech therapist approves of it.” My eyes widened. “See? You're doing just fine, and I'm proud of you. You deserve to rest to get even better so we can leave in some days.” “If she doesn't rest and forces her brain to respond quickly, there can be side effects. She has to follow the process. There's no skipping the procedure.” The nurse added before walking towards the machines to monitor them. “Mikaela!” A voice from behind me shouted. Of course, it didn't take me a second to guess it was Ethan, the man who calls himself her husband but wasn't here when he was needed the most. I turned, watching him storm in. As he watched in, the security men walked towards the door with the lady in between them. But just as Ethan walked past them, the lady called his name. “Ethan.” She screamed, as if she was begging for a hand. Ethan halted, his fist clutching. “Are you going to stand there and watch me get taken away?!” She screamed, kicking her legs profusely to escape the securities’ grasp. “This isn't what we both agreed t-” “I don't even know you!” Ethan denied. “Don't you dare fucking pretend you don't know me. Are you goi-” The door slammed behind them as soon as they took her out, shutting out all her screams. “What?” I mouthed, but I had no reason to be surprised anyway. I had always known he wanted nothing good for Mikaela so even if he was the one behind the lady's act, I had zero right to be shocked. But why? Why would he want this to happen to his ex-wife who he claims he now loves and wants back all of a sudden. I turned my neck back to Mikaela, and her eyes were as wide as saucers, and as white as snow with no hint of blood. Fear. I could tell her trust in him was not only destroyed but shattered. “Why don't you rest now? You deserve it.” I forced a smile. She tugged at my shirt. “Please, don't bring him close to me. I don't….want to see him here.” She pleaded before lowering her body to rest. I placed my hand at her back to help her lay gently. “I can lay by myself.” “I know you can, but let me help you.” I smiled. She faced the wall, shutting her eyes. “I’ll be right here if you need anything.” I blurted, turning to look at Ethan who was already frozen. He couldn't take a step further and I was glad he got my message before I said anything. He knew. He knew a fight would break out if he stepped any closer to her.Chapter ElevenMikaela:It's been over a month now, and yes, it has been a difficult journey to recovery. I thought I had recovered but at some point of my recovery, my energy sucked itself out of me and I was back to scratch, fighting for my life.I couldn't be more glad that I could now move around by myself. Even at that, the doctor recommended lots of sleep and rest and barely any work.It was understandable that he was only trying to do his job, but I wouldn't appreciate him as much as I would appreciate Kevin. He was always there to tell me he'll always be there. He was always there to whisper reassuring words to me when I needed them the most. Always there to make sure I felt more than safe. He would stay up all night to ensure I slept well.He was not just a friend. He was more than a supporter in fact. I couldn't thank him enough and if there was anything I could do to repay his kindness, I would definitely do it. I would trade anything in fact, even my own freedom to ensure
Chapter TwelveMikaela:I sat at the edge of the bed, looking at my face in the mirror that stood across the room.Just as I was about to lay back down, I heard a knock on the door.“Kevin?” I called.“Yeah, it's me.” “Sure. You can come in!” I invited and waited for him to enter but he didn't. “Is there anything wrong?” Worry etched on my face.“No actually. I actually wanted to show you something. Can you come?”“Alright. Just a sec.” I got up immediately, my toes curling at the cold temperature of the floors.I headed towards the door and swung the door open. His face lit up immediately when he saw me. I stepped outside, shutting the door behind me.“I hope you enjoyed dinner?” He asked, his eyes as huge as saucers.Honestly, he wasn't the best cook, but it was okay. I didn't want to be a killjoy. At least he put in some effort to impress me and that alone was enough.I grinned. “Come on, it was great!”He let out a sigh, scratching the back of his neck— an habit I noticed.“Come

There's something I need to talk to her about, and we can't discuss it here. You need to come with me.” He responded, his voice reverberating in the mansion. Was he even listening to himself?I took a small step back before regretting it. I shouldn't have shown him I was scared.“Come on, don't be scared.” He gestured for me to come.He even recognized fear in ladies. He must be a fucking pervert from the poisonous look in his eyes as if he has just hit a jackpot finding me.I took my eyes off him for a split second, looking at Kevin's face for something. A reaction. A nod. A brow raise. Something. Just anything!!Kevin gave me a slight nod, and his eyes asked me to trust him.I took in a sharp breath, moving closer to them slowly.Step by step. Chapter OneMikaela:“Mikaela Abrams Selene, this is not a smart move to make. I'm not letting you give the family's art conglomerate to Ethan! Because you're the heir doesn't mean you can do whatever you want. If you go ahead, then I'm cutting you off!”“Oh really, Mom? Really? You're cutting me off because I'm deciding to give the company to Ethan? Because I'm deciding to love him? Does that sound smart to you?” I scoffed, turning away as I approached the stairs.“He will shatter you. You're too young for that, I don't want you to taste the bitterness I struggled with as a young adult. You're just nineteen!”I halted, my body going stiff.“Well, I heard that a million times already, but he hasn't broken my heart, has he? And We've been together for five months. My muscles went stiff timidly at the feel of his touch.“You'll be fine.” He mumbled before leaning in to press a kiss on my head.Oh, someone fuck his cologne in the face. His fingertips scratched my scalp gently before he pulled away and turned.I watched him exit and
