Lily Pendleton

The celebration ended at dawn.

Kael and I stumbled to our cabin, drunk on mead and happiness. We collapsed into bed, tangled and laughing.

"Best night ever," he mumbled.

"Best night."

He kissed my shoulder. "I love you."

"I love you too."

We fell asleep in each other's arms.

---

I woke up to a knock at the door.

Damon's voice: "Lily. Kael. Get up. We have a problem."

I groaned. Kael pulled the blanket over his head.

"Tell them we're dead," he said.

"Damon, we're dead."

"Lily."

  • HIS MUTE MATE   The uncle

Marcus Kane's cabin was small but warm.Wooden walls, a crackling fire, shelves lined with books and trinkets. It smelled like pine and old leather and home. I didn't know why that word came to mind. But it did.He led me to a worn couch and sat across from me. Up close, I could see the resemblance. His eyes were the same shade as mine—silver-grey, sharp, ancient. His face was lined with age and grief, but his presence was solid. Grounding."You look like your mother," he said quietly."You knew her?""Briefly. She was a good woman. Strong. She loved your father more than anything."I felt a lump in my throat. "What happened to her?""She died in childbirth. Complications. Your father never forgave himself.""And then he died too."Marcus nodded. "He was killed in battle. He never knew you survived. Damian Blackwood made sure of that."I felt a surge of anger. "Damian lied to me. He told me he was my father."Marcus's expression darkened. "Damian Blackwood is a manipulator. He steals

  • HIS MUTE MATE   The search

Thorne didn't waste time.He took me to his private study—a room filled with ancient books, scrolls, and artifacts. He pulled out a worn leather journal, its pages yellowed with age."This is my ancestor's journal," he said. "He documented every powerful supernatural birth for three centuries. If your real father exists, he's in here."I opened the journal. The handwriting was elegant, old-fashioned. Names and dates filled the pages."Look for anything connected to you," Thorne said. "Any mention of a Primordial birth."I flipped through the pages. Decades of history. Wars, alliances, births, deaths. Then I found it."Year 1897. A Primordial child is born to the union of a witch and a wolf. The child is taken by a dark witch named Damian Blackwood. The mother dies in childbirth. The father disappears."My heart stopped. "There's more."I read on."The father is later identified as Alistair Kane. A powerful wolf. Alpha of the Shadow Pack. He was never told of the child's existence. He

  • HIS MUTE MATE   The change

I woke up different. The world was sharper. Colors brighter. Sounds clearer. I could hear the heartbeat of every wolf in the camp, the rustle of leaves miles away, the whisper of wind through the mountains. And I could feel power. Humming under my skin, waiting to be unleashed.Kael was still asleep beside me. His face was relaxed, vulnerable. I traced his jaw, and he stirred."Morning," he mumbled."Morning."He opened his eyes. Then he froze."Lily. Your eyes.""What about them?"He pulled out his phone and showed me the camera. My eyes were glowing. Silver. Like lightning trapped in glass."Whoa," I whispered."Yeah. Whoa."---We told the others at breakfast.Damon stared at me like I was a stranger. Jake's mouth hung open. Even Thorne looked unsettled."It's the Heart," I explained. "It fused with me. I can feel everything now.""What kind of everything?" Damon asked."Everything. Heartbeats. Thoughts. Power."Thorne leaned forward. "Can you control it?""I don't know. I haven't

  • HIS MUTE MATE   The Father

Lily PendletonDamian Blackwood looked exactly like the letter suggested—tall, pale, with silver-grey eyes that mirrored my own. He was handsome in a cold, sharp way. Like a blade wrapped in silk.He smiled. It didn't reach his eyes."You look like your mother," he said."Where is she?""Dead. She died protecting you."My chest tightened. "Protecting me from what?""From me."He said it so casually. Like it meant nothing."You're a witch," he continued. "The most powerful witch born in a thousand years. Your mother was a wolf—a rare Omega who could channel magic through her blood. When she got pregnant, the power combined. It made you... extraordinary."I felt sick. "And you wanted to use me.""I wanted to study you. To understand what you could do. But your mother—" He paused, something flickering in his cold eyes. "She didn't agree. She took you and ran. And she hid you with the Pendletons.""The Pendletons are dead to me now.""Yes. I know."Kael stepped forward. "Why are you telli

Damon stood there, pale, holding a letter."What is it?""Read it."I took the letter. The handwriting was elegant, sharp—familiar."Lily,I know you think you're free. But you're not. You've never been. Because everything you know—your family, your past, your power—it's all a lie.You are not a Pendleton.Your mother was not a wolf. She was a witch—one of the most powerful witches who ever lived. • HIS MUTE MATE   Recovery

Lily PendletonI woke up in a white room.Soft light. Clean sheets. The smell of herbs and medicine. My arm was bandaged, throbbing with a dull ache.I tried to sit up. A hand pushed me gently back down."Easy, easy. You're okay."Kael.He was sitting beside me, his face haggard, dark circles under his eyes. His hair was a mess. He looked like he hadn't slept in days."How long?" I whispered."Three days."Three days."Vivian?""Captured. Thorne has her in a cell. She's not going anywhere."I let out a shaky breath. "The battle?""We won. Barely. But we won."He leaned in, pressing his forehead to mine."Don't ever do that again," he said, his voice cracking. "Don't ever scare me like that.""I didn't mean to—""I know. I know." He kissed me—soft, trembling. "I just can't lose you. I can't."I cupped his face. "You won't."---The next few days were slow.I was weak. The wound on my arm was deep—Vivian's blade had been coated with wolfsbane, slowing my healing. But Thorne's healers wo
