Clara's POV

Since the Las Vegas incident I have buried myself in my work, pulling double shifts until the office was empty, secretly copying all my files onto a hidden flash drive so David and Brianna couldn't steal my architectural credit for the Kairos project before I handed my resignation letter in.

Priya kept cornering me in the breakroom, offering soft, worried glances while she stirred her herbal tea. "You look like you're fading away, Clara," she murmured one afternoon, her voice thick with genuine concern. "Are you sure you are eating? You haven't touched your lunch in days."

I batted her concerns away with bright, brittle smiles, my heart hammering against my ribs. "Just the deadline, Priya. You know how David gets." I forced a laugh, but it sounded like glass breaking. Every time she looked at me with those perceptive eyes, I felt like she could see the secret growing inside me, glowing like a beacon.

I couldn't brush off what was happening to my own body, though. The reality was a physical weight, heavier than any corporate ledger. At first, I blamed the persistent morning nausea on bad takeout or too much burnt office coffee from the communal pot. I told myself my dizziness was just low blood sugar from skipping breakfast to meet David’s insane demands. But then came the heavy, bone-deep exhaustion that sleep couldn't fix no matter how many hours I lay awake staring at the water stains on my bedroom ceiling.

By day five of that realization, I couldn't ignore the calendar hanging on my kitchen wall anymore. The dates were mocking me. I was weeks late.

At 6:30 on a rainy Tuesday morning, the apartment was dead silent except for the rhythmic, maddening drip of the bathroom faucet. I sat locked inside that tiny, tiled room with my back pressed hard against the wooden door, staring down at a little white plastic stick in my trembling hand. The steady patter of rain against the frosted glass window sounded like a drumroll of absolute doom. My breath hitched, a sharp, ragged sound in the confined space.

Two pink lines.

Bright, cheerful, and entirely indifferent to the fact that they had just blown my entire existence to smithereens.

The air rushed out of my lungs as if I'd been struck by a physical blow. I counted backward in my head through a haze of rising panic, my stomach dropping into a bottomless, freezing pit as I landed squarely on that single Friday night in Glowvert. My legs gave out beneath me, and I slid down the wooden doorframe until I hit the cold tile floor, pulling my knees up tightly against my chest.

A ragged sob tore out of my throat, raw and ugly. My shoulders shook, and hot, furious tears spilled down my cheeks, soaking directly into the fabric of my pajamas. This isn't real. I don't even know his name. How is this happening to me? How can my entire life unravel because of four hours I can't even remember? I thought of my mother, and the roof she couldn't afford to fix, and how I was supposed to be the one to save us. If I lost my job, if I disappeared, she would be destitute. The guilt was a jagged blade in my side.

Worse than the crushing shock was the cold, creeping terror of that hotel room folder and the ruthless voice whispering through the heavy oak door: Handle it before she gets home. If the man whose bed I had accidentally shared found out I was carrying his child, he wouldn't send flowers or offer a congratulatory card. Men of that magnitude didn't share custody or negotiate terms. They treated unexpected human variables as corporate liabilities—and they wiped out liabilities with terrifying efficiency.

I knew I couldn't stay in Toronto. I knew the moment my symptoms progressed, I would be entirely visible. Every doctor's appointment, every pharmacy trip, would be a paper trail leading right to my door. My heart was a bird beating itself to death against the cage of my ribs.

I forced myself off the floor, splashed freezing water on my face to wash away the swelling, and dragged myself to work like a ghost walking among the living. I dressed in loose sweaters to hide the subtle change in my shape, my hands shaking as I applied concealer to my under-eye shadows. At 11:30 AM, right as the office hummed with the midday lunch rush, my phone buzzed softly against my wooden desk.

I looked down. An unknown number.

You didn't show up at Front Street. My name is Marcus. I work for him. He doesn't know I'm messaging you, but his team is closing in on your location. You need to decide right now if you want to tell him yourself, or let his security team find you first.

My fingers hovered over the glass screen, ice water running through my veins. I turned the phone face-down against my mousepad, stood up abruptly, and looked through the glass wall of my cubicle out toward the main office lobby. My vision swam.

Parked directly at the curb below, engine idling in the gray drizzle, was a black SUV with deep tinted windows.

When I finally left the office at six o'clock, praying for anonymity among the crowds, the SUV pulled out right behind me. It kept a steady, menacing distance all the way down the block, its headlamps cutting through the thickening evening fog like scanning beams. The walls were shrinking by the hour, the oxygen in the city felt thinner with every breath, and every shadow cast by a streetlight looked like a hunter closing in for the final kill. I clutched my bag to my chest, my knuckles white, terrified that if I turned my head, I would see him. Or worse, that he would see me. Every car that slowed down, every person who walked too close, made me jump. I was no longer a person; I was a marked target, and the clock was counting down to something I wasn't prepared to face. My phone buzzed again, but I didn't dare look. I just kept walking, my pulse a frantic, desperate rhythm that echoed in the empty streets. I was running, but I had nowhere left to hide.

  • HIS ONE NIGHT MISTAKE   Chapter Thirty Seven : Eleanor's Arrest

Clara's POVThe two men at the door didn't move. For several seconds, nobody in the room seemed to remember how to breathe, and the silence felt heavier than the hospital air around us. One of them stepped inside first, his dark suit perfectly pressed, while the other remained near the doorway and quietly closed the door behind him. Their eyes moved across the room before settling on Lucien, and the moment they recognized him, their expressions became even more formal.“Mr. Hargrove,” the older man said, his voice calm and professional. Lucien's face hardened as he looked at him. “Yes?” he replied, his tone carrying the same controlled authority he used in the boardroom. The man reached inside his jacket and pulled out his identification.“I'm Agent Miller with the Federal Financial Crimes Division, and this is Agent Brooks,” he said. “We're here regarding the ongoing investigation into Hargrove Capital and the financial transactions already under review.” Lucien didn't look surprised

  • HIS ONE NIGHT MISTAKE   Chapter Thirty Six: Lucien's Second Girlfriend?

Clara's POV“This is all Sarah's doing.”Eleanor's words hung between us like smoke in a closed room, heavy and impossible to wave away. I thought to myself; I would do the same if I was in her shoes. I stared at her, and I wondered why a mother would behave like this. She knew Sarah was Licien's girlfriend and Lucien brought another pregnant woman in, which she accepted without questions. That acceptance had seemed odd to me from the beginning, but I had been too afraid, too confused, and too tangled in my own situation to ask her why. Looking at her face now, I see that her expression has changed. This is seriously bad, I looked at her and I saw her hands were shaking. The trembling was small at first, just a faint flutter in her fingers, but it grew until the phone in her grip rattled against her palm. This couldn't be because of the article, this had to be something more, as she continued to stare at her phone. Her eyes did not blink. Her breathing had changed, becoming shallow an

  • HIS ONE NIGHT MISTAKE   Chapter Thirty Five: I Will Marry Her

Lucien’s POV“Am I really a prisoner, Lucien?”Clara’s question followed me out of her hospital room.It stayed with me in the hallway, in the elevator, and even after the doors opened onto the private floor of the hospital. Am I really a prisoner?I had wanted to tell her she was wrong.I wanted to tell her that every guard outside her door, every locked gate at the estate, every rule I had placed around her life existed because I was trying to keep her alive. But the truth was harder to swallow.Protection could begin to look a lot like captivity when the person being protected had never been given a choice.I reached the end of the corridor before my phone rang.Marcus.“Where are you?” he asked.“Hospital.”“Emergency conference. Now.”I stopped walking.“How bad?”There was a pause.“Bad enough that the board is already waiting.”I ended the call.By the time I entered the conference room, twenty-three people were seated around the long table. Their faces were carefully blank, bu

  • HIS ONE NIGHT MISTAKE   Chapter Thirty Four: Sarah's Doing

Clara's POV The door closed behind Lucien, leaving the room so quiet that I could hear the monitor beside my bed ticking through every second of my silence. I stared at the door. Why did he walk away like that? I was only telling the truth. I am a prisoner here, and this pregnancy is just adding to it. It is making the cage smaller, heavier, and more impossible to ignore. Every day I stay in that estate, I lose another piece of the life I had before. And he walked away as if I had said something cruel, something un real, when all I had done was to put it to him again the reality of my situation. Then my baby kicked. I did not really know if it was a kick at first. It was small, strange, like a flutter doesn't belong to me. But then it repeated, and I felt a little pressure in my abdomen, a force that made me hold my lower belly. Baby, I said softly, mummy doesn’t want to leave Daddy, but mummy has a life outside of here. Daddy won’t even allow mummy to go and see Grandma

  • HIS ONE NIGHT MISTAKE   Chapter Thirty Three: Awake

Clara's POVThe first thing I felt was pressure against my fingers.Someone was holding my hand.I tried to move, but my body felt heavy, as if I had been asleep for weeks instead of hours. My throat was dry, my head throbbed, and a strange beeping sound kept repeating somewhere beside me.“Clara?”The voice sounded far away.I forced my eyes open. The ceiling above me was white. A clear tube ran beneath my nose, and a monitor flashed green numbers beside the bed. I turned my head slowly and found Eleanor sitting next to me, her hair loose around her shoulders and her hand wrapped tightly around mine. Her eyes widened when she saw me looking at her.“Oh, thank God.”I tried to speak.Nothing came out.Eleanor reached for the glass on the table and held a straw to my lips.“Small sip.”The water felt cold against my throat.I swallowed once, then again.“Where am I?”“The hospital.”I closed my eyes.Memory returned in pieces. The stairs. The warmth between my legs. The blood.Lucien r
