Isabella barely slept that night.

Every time she closed her eyes, she saw the document on her phone.

Original ownership records keep confidential.

The words had followed her home from Patricia’s office, leaving her with more questions than answers.

Why was her name on a document connected to Blackwood Holdings? Why had Alexander never mentioned it? And who was the person sending her these warnings?

She sat on the edge of her bed, scrolling through the photograph again.

Three years ago.

She remembered that period. Alexander had been struggling to secure investors, and she had spent several evenings helping him organize paperwork in their apartment.

He had been so stressed that she often prepared his meals and stayed awake waiting for him to return from meetings.

She had believed she was helping her husband build their future.

Had she unknowingly signed something that gave him control over her?

Her phone rang.

Amara.

“You’re awake,” her sister said immediately.

“How did you know?”

“Because I know you. You sound like someone who has been thinking all night.”

Isabella managed a faint smile.

“I have.”

“Did you get any answers from Patricia?”

“Not yet. She needs the original documents.”

“Then we’ll find them.”

Isabella looked towards the wardrobe where her suitcase stood.

“I’m not sure Alexander will make that easy.”

“Since when have we needed Alexander’s permission to find out the truth?”

Isabella said nothing.

Amara’s voice softened.

“Listen to me. You don’t have to figure everything out today. Just take one step at a time.”

“I know.”

“And please eat something. You can’t spend the entire day surviving on coffee and heartbreak.”

A small laugh escaped Isabella.

“I’ll try.”

“Good. I’ll call you later.”

After ending the call, Isabella finally got out of bed.

She had spent enough time crying.

It was time to start looking for answers.

⸻

By eleven that morning, Isabella was sitting in a small café near Patricia’s office, reviewing the list of documents her lawyer had requested.

She had already sent Patricia photographs of everything she found at home.

Unfortunately, most of the important records appeared to be missing.

Her phone vibrated.

A message from Patricia.

I’ve reviewed the documents you sent. I need to see the original ownership records and any earlier agreements involving your name. Please don’t attempt to obtain anything unlawfully. I’ll contact you once I’ve confirmed the appropriate steps.

Isabella read the message twice.

She was about to reply when another notification appeared.

This time, it was from an old friend.

A message had been posted in their mutual social circle’s group chat.

Some people should learn to accept when a relationship is over instead of embarrassing themselves publicly.

No name was mentioned.

None was needed.

Isabella stared at the screen.

Another message followed.

Especially when the man has already moved on.

She locked her phone.

Victoria.

She knew that particular style of cruelty. Victoria rarely attacked directly when she could make other people do it for her.

A moment later, a private message arrived.

Isabella, I hope you’re feeling better. I know the other night was difficult, but please don’t make things harder than they already are. Alexander and I deserve a chance to be happy.

Isabella read it slowly.

Then she typed:

You had fifteen years to be my friend. You chose to become my husband’s secret instead.

She sent the message before she could change her mind.

Victoria didn’t reply immediately.

Instead, she posted a photograph.

It showed her standing beside Alexander at the anniversary celebration. His arm was around her waist, and her engagement ring was positioned prominently against his jacket.

The caption read:

Sometimes life gives you what was meant for you, even when it hurts someone else.

Isabella placed her phone face down.

For the first time, she understood something clearly.

Victoria wasn’t sorry.

She wanted Isabella to see how happy she was.

⸻

Across town, Victoria sat in Alexander’s penthouse, admiring the diamond ring on her finger.

Alexander was standing near the window, scrolling through emails.

“Have you spoken to Isabella?” Victoria asked.

“No.”

“Why not?”

He glanced at her.

“Because I don’t need to.”

Victoria smiled faintly.

“She’s been talking to Patricia Williams.”

Alexander lowered his phone.

“How do you know?”

“One of our mutual friends saw them together.”

His expression darkened.

“She hired a lawyer?”

“Apparently.”

Alexander walked towards the bar and poured himself a drink.

“That woman has no idea what she’s getting herself into.”

Victoria watched him carefully.

“Maybe she’s beginning to understand more than you think.”

He turned.

“What is that supposed to mean?”

“Nothing. I’m just saying she’s not as helpless as you expected.”

Alexander’s jaw tightened.

“Isabella has spent years depending on me. She’ll get tired of this eventually.”

Victoria looked down at her ring.

She wanted to believe him.

But something about his confidence had begun to irritate her.

“Alexander, when are we announcing our wedding date?”

“Soon.”

“You said that last week.”

“I have more important things to deal with right now.”

Victoria’s smile disappeared.

“Like Isabella?”

He gave her a warning look.

“Don’t start.”

She stood and approached him.

“I left everything behind because you promised me a future. I don’t intend to spend it waiting for your ex-wife to decide when she’s ready to leave.”

Alexander set his glass down.

“Victoria, I said I’ll handle it.”

She looked away, hiding the frustration on her face.

She had won the man.

But she was beginning to wonder whether she had won the life she wanted.

⸻

That afternoon, Isabella returned to the house to collect some additional belongings.

She had arranged to return with Amara the following day, but there were a few personal items she wanted to retrieve herself.

The house was unusually quiet.

She walked through the living room, noticing how familiar everything looked.

The same furniture. The same paintings. The same photographs.

Except the photographs no longer meant what they once had.

She went upstairs and entered Alexander’s home office.

She had rarely spent time there. Alexander preferred keeping his business affairs private, and she had never questioned it.

Now, she looked at the room differently.

The desk was arranged neatly. Several folders sat inside a cabinet, and a framed photograph of Alexander stood beside his computer.

She approached the cabinet.

It was locked.

Isabella tried the handle again.

Nothing.

She took a step back.

She wasn’t going to force anything open. Patricia had already advised her to follow the proper legal process.

Instead, she looked around the desk.

A small stack of envelopes sat beneath a folder.

One caught her attention.

It was addressed to Alexander from Cole Capital.

Isabella picked it up.

The date was recent.

She carefully opened the envelope and removed the letter.

The first paragraph mentioned a proposed acquisition of Blackwood Holdings.

She continued reading.

Then she stopped.

Following our preliminary review, we are unable to proceed with the proposed transaction due to unresolved questions concerning the company’s ownership structure and financial disclosures.

Isabella read the paragraph again.

Ownership structure.

She looked at the bottom of the letter.

It was signed by Sebastian Cole.

A sound came from the doorway.

“Looking for something?”

Isabella turned sharply.

Alexander stood there.

His expression was cold.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then his eyes moved to the letter in her hand.

“What are you doing in my office?”

Isabella slowly lowered the paper.

“I came to collect my things.”

“Then collect your things and leave.”

She looked at him.

“Why did you never tell me about the ownership documents?”

His face changed.

Only slightly, but she noticed.

“What documents?”

“Don’t pretend you don’t know.”

Alexander stepped into the room and held out his hand.

“Give me that letter.”

Isabella looked down at it.

“Is this why Cole Capital rejected your proposal?”

“That’s none of your business.”

“Then why is my name on the original ownership records?”

His expression hardened.

“Who told you about those records?”

Isabella’s heart began beating faster.

She had asked a question.

But his reaction had given her something more important.

He knew exactly what she was talking about.

“Answer me, Alexander.”

He moved closer.

“You’ve been talking to people you don’t understand.”

“Perhaps you should have explained things to me when I was still your wife.”

For a moment, something flickered across his face.

Then it disappeared.

“You’re making a mistake, Isabella.”

“No. I think I’ve made enough mistakes believing you.”

She placed the letter back on the desk.

“I’ll be leaving tomorrow. But don’t expect me to sign anything until my lawyer has reviewed it.”

Alexander stared at her.

“Patricia Williams is putting ideas into your head.”

“At least she’s answering my questions.”

She walked past him.

This time, he didn’t stop her.

But as Isabella reached the doorway, his voice followed her.

“You have no idea what you’re getting involved in.”

She turned.

“Then perhaps you should have thought about that before putting my name on things I never agreed to.”

She left the room.

Behind her, Alexander stood motionless.

⸻

In the car, Isabella’s phone vibrated.

Unknown Number.

You saw the Cole Capital letter.

She stared at the message.

How could this person know?

She typed:

Are you following me?

The response came quickly.

No. But Alexander is becoming careless.

Another message appeared.

You need to understand why he wanted Cole Capital to buy part of the company.

Isabella’s fingers moved across the screen.

Why?

This time, the answer took longer.

Because the company’s financial problems are worse than he’s admitting.

Before she could ask another question, a final message arrived.

And your name may be the only thing standing between him and the truth.

Isabella looked out of the window.

The city moved around her, unaware that her entire understanding of her marriage was beginning to collapse.

She had thought Alexander betrayed her because he had fallen in love with Victoria.

Now she was beginning to suspect that he had been hiding something much bigger.

And she intended to find out what it was.
