“Isabella!”

Amara rushed towards her the moment she stepped out of her car.

Isabella stood beneath the entrance of the hotel, still wearing the red dress she had chosen for her husband’s celebration. Her makeup was beginning to fade, and her eyes were swollen.

Amara pulled her into a hug.

“What happened? Why are you crying?”

Isabella tried to speak, but the words wouldn’t come.

“Let’s get you home first,” Amara whispered.

She helped her into the passenger seat and drove away.

For several minutes, neither of them spoke.

Then Amara glanced at her.

“Was it Alexander?”

Isabella stared out of the window.

“He announced his engagement tonight.”

Amara frowned.

“What?”

“To Victoria.”

The car slowed.

“Victoria Hayes? Your Victoria?”

Isabella nodded.

Amara pulled over.

“You’re joking.”

“I wish I were.”

“That woman has been in your life for fifteen years. She was at your wedding, Isabella. She held your hand when—”

“Please.”

Isabella closed her eyes.

Amara stopped talking.

After a moment, Isabella’s phone vibrated.

She looked down.

The unknown number had sent another message.

Unknown Number:

Don’t confront him about the document until you understand what it means.

Isabella stared at the screen.

“Who is that?” Amara asked.

“I don’t know.”

She showed her the photograph.

Amara zoomed in on the document.

“What exactly is this?”

“I have no idea. But that’s my signature.”

“Did you sign anything recently?”

“No.”

“Think carefully.”

“I said no, Amara.”

Her voice came out sharper than intended.

Amara looked at her sister, then softened.

“Okay. I’m sorry.”

Isabella rubbed her forehead.

“I haven’t even had time to process what happened tonight. I went there thinking I was celebrating my husband’s success. I came back knowing he had been sleeping with my best friend.”

Her voice trembled.

“And now someone is telling me he has been signing documents in my name.”

Amara reached across the console and held her hand.

“Then we need to find out what’s going on.”

⸻

They arrived at Isabella and Alexander’s house shortly after eleven.

The enormous glass doors opened into a beautifully furnished living room. Everything looked exactly as Isabella had left it that morning.

The cream sofa.

The expensive paintings.

The photographs from their wedding.

She stopped in front of one of them.

Alexander had his arms around her waist, his forehead resting against hers. They looked impossibly happy.

She wondered when that happiness had ended.

“Isabella?”

She turned towards Amara.

“I’m going upstairs.”

“I’ll make you something to eat.”

“I’m not hungry.”

She climbed the staircase slowly.

Their bedroom was exactly as she remembered it. Alexander’s shirts hung neatly inside the wardrobe, and his expensive cologne sat on the dressing table.

She walked towards the bed and sat down.

Then her eyes fell on the bedside drawer.

She opened it.

Inside were their wedding rings’ original boxes, some old photographs and a small envelope.

She took it out.

There were several bank statements inside.

At first, she didn’t understand what she was looking at.

Then she noticed a name.

Blackwood Holdings.

She began reading.

A loan agreement.

A transfer of shares.

A personal guarantee.

Her name appeared on three separate documents.

Her heart started beating faster.

The dates were particularly disturbing.

The first document was dated six months earlier.

The second was dated three months earlier.

The third had been signed just two weeks ago.

Isabella read the final page again.

According to the document, she had personally guaranteed a substantial business loan using assets connected to her name.

She dropped the papers onto the bed.

“What have you done, Alexander?”

Her phone vibrated again.

This time, the message was longer.

Unknown Number:

Your husband has been preparing for this for months. You need to find out where the original documents are before he realizes you’ve seen them.

Isabella stared at the message.

Then she typed.

Isabella:

Who are you?

The reply came almost immediately.

Unknown Number:

Someone who knows what he did to you.

Before she could respond, another message appeared.

And Isabella, don’t trust Victoria.

She looked towards the bedroom door.

For the first time that night, she wasn’t thinking about the engagement.

She was thinking about the possibility that her marriage had been a lie long before she discovered the affair.

CHAPTER THREE

The House Was Never Hers

The following morning, Isabella woke up with a headache.

She had barely slept.

Amara had spent most of the night on the sofa downstairs, refusing to leave her alone.

At seven-thirty, Isabella walked into the kitchen.

Her sister was preparing coffee.

“Good morning,” Amara said.

“Is it?”

Amara gave her a sympathetic look.

“Come and sit down.”

Isabella poured herself a glass of water.

“I need to speak with Alexander.”

“About what?”

“Those documents.”

“Are you sure that’s a good idea?”

“He is my husband, Amara. Whatever happened between us, I deserve an explanation.”

Amara didn’t argue.

Isabella picked up her phone and called him.

He answered after the fourth ring.

“What?”

She almost didn’t recognize his voice.

No greeting.

No concern.

Nothing.

“We need to talk.”

“I’m busy.”

“Alexander, I found the documents.”

There was silence.

“What documents?”

“The loan agreement. The transfer of shares. The ones with my signature.”

Another silence followed.

Then he sighed.

“Is that what this is about?”

“Yes. What did you sign in my name?”

“I didn’t sign anything in your name.”

“Then why does the document have my signature?”

“Isabella, don’t start something you don’t understand.”

Her fingers tightened around the phone.

“I understand that I never agreed to guarantee your business loan.”

“Those were business arrangements. You were informed.”

“No, I wasn’t.”

“Well, you should have been.”

She let out a disbelieving breath.

“That’s your explanation?”

“I don’t have time for this. My lawyer will contact you.”

“Your lawyer?”

“Yes. We need to finalize the divorce.”

Isabella felt something tighten in her chest.

He was already discussing divorce.

As if the previous night had been nothing more than a meeting he wanted to get out of.

“Alexander, are you seriously doing this?”

“Don’t make it difficult.”

She laughed bitterly.

“You humiliated me in front of an entire ballroom. You announced your engagement to my best friend while I was standing there as your wife. And now you’re telling me not to make things difficult?”

“Victoria and I are together. You need to accept that.”

“How long?”

“Does it matter?”

“To me, it does.”

“Isabella, I don’t owe you an explanation for my personal life anymore.”

The call ended.

She stared at the screen.

Amara stood beside her.

“What did he say?”

“He said his lawyer would contact me.”

Amara shook her head.

“Unbelievable.”

Isabella returned to the bedroom.

She needed to get out of the house before she lost her mind.

She opened her wardrobe and pulled out a small suitcase.

She began packing her clothes.

Then she noticed something.

The jewellery box on her dressing table was open.

Her wedding necklace was missing.

So was the bracelet Alexander had given her on their third anniversary.

She searched the drawer.

Nothing.

She called the housekeeper.

“Good morning, ma’am.”

“Have you seen my jewellery box?”

“No, ma’am.”

“Was anyone in the bedroom yesterday?”

The housekeeper hesitated.

“Mr. Alexander came home yesterday afternoon with Miss Victoria.”

Isabella stopped moving.

“Victoria was here?”

“Yes, ma’am.”

“When?”

“Yesterday afternoon. Before you returned.”

Isabella slowly lowered the phone.

Victoria had been inside her bedroom.

Inside her home.

Perhaps even inside her wardrobe.

She ended the call.

A few minutes later, her phone rang.

It was Alexander’s lawyer.

“Good morning, Mrs. Blackwood. My name is Richard Evans. I’m calling on behalf of Mr. Blackwood regarding your separation.”

“Go ahead.”

“Mr. Blackwood would like the process concluded as quickly as possible. We have prepared some documents for your review.”

“I’ll review them when I receive them.”

“Certainly. There’s also a matter concerning the property.”

“What matter?”

“The house is registered under Mr. Blackwood’s name. He would appreciate it if you could arrange to vacate the property within the next seven days.”

Isabella went completely still.

“Seven days?”

“Yes, ma’am.”

She looked around the bedroom.

The furniture she had selected.

The curtains she had paid for.

The home she had helped turn into a family space.

And now she was being asked to leave it.

“Understood,” she said quietly.

She ended the call.

Amara appeared at the doorway.

“What’s wrong?”

Isabella looked at her sister.

“He wants me out.”

“Out of the house?”

“Seven days.”

Amara’s mouth fell open.

“That man has lost his mind.”

Isabella sat on the edge of the bed.

For the first time, the reality of her situation began to sink in.

She could lose her home.

She could be held responsible for a loan she never agreed to.

And she had no idea how much Alexander had done behind her back.

But there was one thing she knew.

She wasn’t going to sign anything without understanding it.

She opened her phone and searched for a lawyer.

If Alexander thought she would walk away quietly, he had badly underestimated her.

CHAPTER FOUR

A Stranger’s Warning

By noon, Isabella had packed two suitcases.

Amara had offered to let her stay at her apartment until she figured things out.

It wasn’t ideal, but it was better than remaining in a house where every corner reminded her of the life she had just lost.

Before leaving, Isabella walked through the living room one last time.

Her eyes settled on a framed photograph from their honeymoon.

She picked it up.

Alexander was holding her against his chest, smiling at the camera.

She remembered that trip.

She remembered how he had promised to love her through every season of their lives.

She placed the photograph back on the shelf.

Then she walked out.

⸻

At two in the afternoon, Isabella sat inside a small law office in the city.

She had found the firm online and managed to secure an appointment.

The lawyer, a middle-aged woman named Patricia Williams, listened carefully as Isabella explained everything.

She showed her the photographs of the documents.

Patricia studied them.

“Did you authorize any of these transactions?”

“No.”

“Did you sign any power of attorney giving your husband permission to sign documents on your behalf?”

“No.”

“Did you ever agree to guarantee a loan for Blackwood Holdings?”

“No. I didn’t even know the company had taken out a loan.”

Patricia placed the documents on her desk.

“Then we need to investigate this carefully.”

“Can he use my name without my permission?”

“If your signature was forged or documents were submitted without your authorization, that could raise serious legal issues. But I need to examine the original records before drawing any conclusions.”

Isabella nodded.

“What about the house?”

“We’ll need to verify the ownership documents and the circumstances surrounding the property. Don’t assume you have no rights simply because your husband says so.”

For the first time that day, Isabella felt a little less helpless.

Patricia handed her a business card.

“I’ll need copies of everything you have. Don’t confront him again until we understand the situation.”

“All right.”

As Isabella stood to leave, Patricia’s phone rang.

She answered briefly, then looked towards the door.

“Actually, Isabella, I have someone who might be useful in understanding the business side of this situation.”

Isabella paused.

“Who?”

“Someone familiar with Blackwood Holdings.”

Before Patricia could explain, the office door opened.

A tall man in a charcoal-grey suit walked inside.

He appeared to be in his early thirties. His dark hair was neatly styled, and his expression was calm but difficult to read.

He glanced at Patricia before his eyes settled on Isabella.

“Am I interrupting?”

“Not at all,” Patricia replied. “We were just discussing a matter involving Blackwood Holdings.”

The man’s expression changed slightly.

“Blackwood?”

Isabella watched him carefully.

“Do you know my husband?”

He looked at her for a moment.

“Alexander Blackwood?”

“Yes.”

The man pulled out a chair.

“Unfortunately, I know his business dealings.”

Patricia introduced him.

“Isabella, this is Sebastian Cole. He runs Cole Capital.”

Isabella had heard the name before.

Cole Capital was a major investment firm with interests in several industries. Alexander had once mentioned them during a conversation about potential business partnerships.

Sebastian extended his hand.

“Nice to meet you.”

She shook it.

“Likewise.”

He glanced at the documents on Patricia’s desk.

“Is this about the recent restructuring of Blackwood Holdings?”

Isabella frowned.

“Restructuring?”

Sebastian looked at Patricia.

“She doesn’t know?”

“She’s still trying to understand what happened.”

He leaned back slightly.

“Then perhaps I should explain something.”

Isabella folded her arms.

“What?”

“Your husband has been trying to sell a significant portion of his company for several months.”

She stared at him.

“Why?”

“Financial difficulties, among other things.”

“Alexander told everyone the company was doing exceptionally well.”

Sebastian gave a faint, humourless smile.

“That’s what he wanted everyone to believe.”

Isabella felt her stomach tighten.

“How do you know this?”

“Because he approached my firm.”

“And?”

Sebastian paused.

“We declined the deal.”

“Why?”

His eyes moved briefly to the documents.

“Because the financial records didn’t make sense.”

Patricia leaned forward.

“Sebastian, are you suggesting there were irregularities?”

“I’m saying we found inconsistencies that required further investigation.”

Isabella sat down slowly.

Her husband had been struggling financially?

He had been hiding loans?

And apparently, someone else had noticed.

“Does this have anything to do with the documents carrying my signature?” she asked.

Sebastian looked at her directly.

“I don’t know what documents you’re referring to.”

She showed him the photograph.

He studied it for several seconds.

Then his expression became noticeably more serious.

“Where did you get this?”

“Someone sent it to me.”

“Do you know who?”

“No.”

He returned the phone.

“Mrs. Blackwood, I would strongly advise you not to sign anything your husband or his lawyers send you.”

“I wasn’t planning to.”

“Good.”

He stood and adjusted his jacket.

Then he looked at Patricia.

“I’ll send you the information we discussed.”

As he turned towards the door, Isabella spoke.

“Mr. Cole?”

He stopped.

“Yes?”

“Do you think my husband is in trouble?”

Sebastian looked at her.

“I think you should be more concerned about whether he’s planning to make his problems yours.”

He walked out.

Isabella remained seated.

The words stayed with her long after the door closed.

A moment later, her phone vibrated.

She looked down.

Another message from the unknown number.

Unknown Number:

I see you’ve met Sebastian Cole.

Isabella’s eyes widened.

Before she could respond, another message appeared.

Be careful. He’s not the only person who knows what Alexander has done.

Then came the final message.

Ask your husband what happened to the original ownership documents of Blackwood Holdings. Your name is on them for a reason.

Isabella slowly raised her head.

Across the office, Patricia was reading through the papers.

“Patricia?”

“Yes?”

“There’s something else I need to tell you.”

She placed her phone on the desk.

“I think someone is watching what I’m doing.”

And for the first time since the night of the anniversary party, Isabella realized that her marriage wasn’t the only thing she might have to fight for.
