CHAPTER 3: Trap

I didn't go home to Damian that night. I sat in my car in the hospital parking lot, staring at Julian's text message: Meet me at the old penthouse. Bring the divorce papers. Let's talk about a truce.

It was a trap. Of course it was a trap.

But my mother was sleeping peacefully for the first time in months because Julian had paid for her morphine drip.

I went.

The penthouse looked exactly the same. Cold marble. Empty hallways. The bedroom where I'd cried myself to sleep a hundred times. Julian stood by the window, backlit by city lights. He looked almost handsome.

"You came," he said again.

"Don't sound so surprised. You held my mother hostage with a checkbook."

He flinched. "That's not—I was trying to help."

"You were trying to buy me."

He turned. His eyes were wet. Fake, I told myself. All of it is fake.

"I'll give you Kael Corp," he said suddenly.

I blinked. "What?"

"I've been building a hostile takeover bid for months. I have enough dirt on Damian to put him in prison for ten years. Tax evasion, fraud, maybe even worse. You help me take his company, and I'll give you forty percent. You'll be a billionaire. You can save your mother a hundred times over."

My heart hammered. This was new. Julian had never played the long game like this.

"What's the catch?" I asked.

"The catch," he said, walking toward me until his chest almost touched mine, "is that you marry me again. In public. For real this time. No more hiding. You'll be Elara Thorne, queen of both empires."

I looked into his eyes. And for one awful, traitorous second—I remembered the good days. The way he'd hold me after a nightmare. The way he'd whisper "mine" into my hair.

Then I remembered the divorce papers. The cold hum of the penthouse. The silence.

"If I say no?" I whispered.

Julian's hand cupped my cheek. Gentle. Menacing.

"Then your mother loses her treatment tomorrow. And I ruin Damian. And you go back to being a librarian with nothing."

I had two choices. Betray Damian—the only man who'd ever treated me like an equal—or lose my mother.

But I had a third choice.

One Julian didn't see coming.

I pulled a small recorder from my bra. The red light was blinking.

"I have everything," I said softly. "The bribe. The threat to my mother. The hostile takeover plot. It's all on this drive, backed up to three different servers. Touch me, touch Damian, or touch my mother—and I release it all to the SEC, the FBI, and every news outlet in the country."

Julian's face went white. Then red. Then purple.

"You little—"

I stepped back, just out of his reach. "I learned from the best, Julian. You taught me that love is just leverage. Well, now I have the leverage."

I turned and walked to the door. He didn't follow.

But as I reached for the handle, my phone buzzed.

Damian: Get out of there. Now. He's not alone.

I looked up.

The door handle turned on its own.

And three men in black masks stepped inside.

  • HIS REGRET MY REVENGE   CHAPTER 14 : THE MORNING AFTER

I didn't sleep that night. Lily slept in my arms on a cot at the police station. Julian sat across from us, head in his hands. Damian stood by the window, watching the sunrise. No one spoke. The silence was heavier than any words. At 7 AM, a social worker arrived. Her name was Mrs. Alvarez, and she had kind eyes and a gentle voice. "We need to place Lily in temporary foster care," she said. "No." Julian stood up. "She stays with us." "Mr. Thorne, you're currently under investigation. Your father—" "My father is a criminal. I'm not." Julian's voice cracked. "She's my daughter. I have rights." "I understand. But legally, until the courts decide—" "She stays with me." I stood up, still holding Lily. "I'm her mother. I have no criminal record. I have a home. I have income. There's no reason to take her from me." Mrs. Alvarez looked at me for a long moment. Then she nodded. "I'll file an emergency custody order. But you'll need to appear in court next week." "Fine." She left.

  • HIS REGRET MY REVENGE   CHAPTER 13 : The arrest

Victor Thorne was handcuffed and led out of the mansion like a king dragged from his throne. He didn't scream. He didn't beg. He just looked at Julian with something that might have been pride. "You were always my favorite," Victor said. "That's why I was hardest on you." Julian didn't answer. He was holding Lily, who was crying quietly against his chest. "Take him away," Damian said to the agents. "yes sir "They did. The mansion became empty. Agents swarmed every room, collecting evidence, photographing and each and every single thing they could take. In the chaos, Damian walked to me. "You're bleeding," he said. I touched my arm and he was right. I really hadn't noticed that i was cut, maybe it was the glass, probably, from when I crawled out of the tunnel. "It's nothing."i brushed it off "It's not nothing." He pulled off his jacket and wrapped it around my shoulders. "You almost died." "But I didn't." "That's not the point." His voice was tight. "You went in alone. You

  • HIS REGRET MY REVENGE   CHAPTER 12 : The old mansion

The Thorne mansion had been abandoned for years. Or so everyone thought. I parked my car two miles away and walked through the woods. The key Maya gave me was cold in my palm. The November wind cut through my coat like Julian's words used to cut through my heart. *He didn't mean them*, I told myself. *He was protecting you.* But knowing the truth and feeling it were two different things. The mansion appeared through the trees like a ghost. Three stories of crumbling brick, shattered windows, and ivy strangling the walls. No lights. No sounds. No signs of life. But Victor Thorne was in there. And Julian. And my daughter. I found the tunnel entrance behind a dead oak tree—a metal door half-buried in dirt. The key turned with a screech. I pulled open the door and stepped into darkness. The tunnel smelled like wet earth and rust. My phone's flashlight cut a narrow path through the shadows. Water dripped somewhere ahead. My footsteps echoed like gunshots. *You should have brought

  • HIS REGRET MY REVENGE   CHAPTER 11 : The investigation

I didn't go to the Thorne mansion. Not yet atleast.Reckless people die. Smart people prepare. That the kind of mentality i have. To me i think thats a good type of mentality.I went to a woman named Detective Maya Ross, the only cop in the city who hadn't been bought by the Thorne family. A kind of cop who worked out of a cramped office above a laundromat, surrounded by files and the smell of coffee."Elara Vance," she said when I walked in. "I've been expecting you.""You have?""Julian told me to find you if anything happened to him." She handed me a thick folder. "Read this. Then we'll talk."I opened the folder. It was a full investigation into Victor Thorne. His crimes. His allies. His weaknesses. And at the very bottom, a photograph of a girl. She was maybe five years old. Dark hair. Julian's eyes."Who is this?" I whispered.Maya leaned back in her chair. "That's Lily. Julian's daughter."My heart stopped."Julian doesn't have a daughter.""Yes, he does. And so do you." Maya's

  • HIS REGRET MY REVENGE    CHAPTER 10 : DAMIAN'S PAST

CHAPTER 10: DAMIAN'S PAST I finally went to Damian's penthouse at midnight. He was waiting on the couch, a bottle of whiskey untouched on the table. He looked older than thirty. Worn. "You came," he said. "You knew about my father." "Yes." "You knew about Sarah." "Yes." "You knew about Victor." "Yes." I walked to the window. The city was dark. Even the billionaires were sleeping. "How long?" I asked. "Since the beginning. I didn't approach you by accident, Elara. I've been watching you for two years. Ever since Julian divorced you." I turned. "You've been stalking me?" "I've been protecting you." He stood. "Victor Thorne tried to have you killed the night you signed the divorce papers. He paid a man to run your car off the road. I stopped it. I've been stopping it for three years." The air left my lungs. "You think Julian divorced me because he was cruel. He divorced you because if he didn't, his father was going to murder you. That check for ten mill

  • HIS REGRET MY REVENGE   CHAPTER 9 : The hospital visit

I didn't go to Damian's penthouse. I went to the hospital. My mother was awake when I arrived—really awake, not the half-conscious haze of painkillers. Her eyes were clear. Her color was better. "Elara," she said, reaching for my hand. "You look terrible." "Thanks, Mom." "What happened? Is it Julian? Did he hurt you again?" I sat on the edge of her bed. "Mom… how long has Julian been paying for your treatment?" She looked away. "Mom." "Five years," she whispered. "He started paying five years ago. Before you even met him." The world tilted. "Before we met?" My voice cracked. "How is that possible?" Your father's death wasn't an accident, Elara. It was a car accident, I said. Your father's death wasn't an accident." My mother's voice was barely audible. "Julian's father arranged it. Your father was an accountant. He found something in Thorne Industries' books—something that would have sent the whole family to prison. So they killed him. And Julian… Julian was
