The door handle turned.

Three men in black masks stepped inside. Not goons. Professionals. Their suits were expensive, their movements synchronized. They didn't look at Julian. They looked at me.

Damian was right.

My heart slammed against my ribs, but my face stayed still. Three years ago, I would have screamed. Now? I calculated.

"Elara," Julian said, and his voice had changed. All the warmth was gone. "Give me the recorder."

"Or what? You'll have your pets hurt me?" I didn't move. "That would be hard to explain to the press. Billionaire assaults ex-wife. Not great for stock prices."

One of the men stepped forward. He was huge—easily six-foot-four, with hands that had broken bones before. "We don't need to hurt you, Miss Vance. Just take the device."

I smiled. "You can't take what you can't find."

I had already pressed send.

Julian's phone buzzed. Then the second man's phone. Then the third.

Julian pulled it out. His face drained of color. On his screen was a notification:

"FILE RECEIVED: EVIDENCE_PACKAGE_THORNE.zip from unknown server."

"What did you do?" he whispered.

"I told you," I said, stepping toward the door. The men blocked me, but I didn't stop. I walked right into the big one's chest. He didn't move. I looked up at him. "If you touch me, that file goes to the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, and the FBI. Not just the recording from tonight. Everything. Tax evasion. Insider trading. The offshore accounts in the Caymans. The woman in Dubai you told me was a business partner."

The big man looked at Julian.

Julian's hands were shaking. "Let her go."

"But sir—"

"I said LET HER GO."

The men parted. I walked to the door, opened it, and stepped into the hallway. My legs were trembling, but I didn't look back.

"Elara," Julian called. His voice cracked again. "This isn't over."

I turned my head just enough for him to see my profile. "No, Julian. It's not. But from now on, I decide the rules."

I walked out.

The elevator doors closed behind me, and I let out a breath I didn't know I'd been holding. My hands were shaking. I looked down at my phone.

One new message from Damian: Are you alive?

Me: Barely. Pick me up at the west entrance. And bring chocolate.

Damian: Dark or milk?

Me: Dark. Like my soul now.

I laughed. It was shaky and raw, but it was real. I had just walked into a trap, stolen evidence from a billionaire, and walked out alive.

But Julian's words echoed in my head: "I know the real reason you're doing this. Fear."

Was he right?

The elevator doors opened. Damian's black SUV was idling at the curb. He jumped out before the car fully stopped, grabbed my face in both hands, and looked at me like I was a ghost.

"Your nose is bleeding," he said softly.

I touched my upper lip. Red. "It's nothing."

"It's not nothing." He pulled me into a hug—tight, warm, nothing like Julian's cold embraces. "You're shaking."

"I'm fine."

"You're lying."

I pulled back and looked at him. Damian Kael, the most dangerous man in the city, looked genuinely terrified. For me.

"Why do you care?" I asked. "This is just business, right?"

He didn't answer. He just opened the car door and said, "Get in. We have work to do."

As I climbed into the leather seat, I saw something in his eyes. Something I hadn't seen in three years.

Care.

And that scared me more than Julian ever could.

  • HIS REGRET MY REVENGE   CHAPTER 70: forever starts now-the final chapter

It was a Sunday morning. The sun was shining through the kitchen windows, casting warm golden light across the countertops. The birds were singing outside, their cheerful melodies drifting through the open windows. The house smelled like pancakes and fresh coffee. The sound of laughter drifted up from the kitchen. James was twelve. Lily was seventeen. They were sitting at the kitchen table, arguing over the last pancake. Charlie, our golden retriever, was under the table, hoping for scraps. Princess, our calico cat, was on the windowsill, pretending not to care about the chaos below. "Give it to me," James said, reaching for the plate. "No, it's mine," Lily said, pulling it away. "I want it." "I want it more." "You always want everything." "Because I'm older." "Being older doesn't make you better." "It makes me smarter." "No, it doesn't." I looked at Julian. He was standing at the stove, flipping pancakes with an expression of fond exasperation. His hair was grayer now. Hi

  • HIS REGRET MY REVENGE   CHAPTER 69 : The family reunion

We had a family reunion at the beach house. The same cottage. The same blue shutters. The same porch facing the water. The same sand. The same waves. The same memories. Everyone came. Damian. Chloe. Baxter the golden retriever. My mother. James. Lily. Even Simone. She was clean. She was healthy. She was part of the family. She had been for years. "This is wonderful," my mother said. "All of us together. All of us happy. All of us alive." "It's perfect," I agreed. The beach was empty. The sun was warm. The waves were gentle. The sky was blue. Lily and James ran into the water. They splashed each other. They laughed. They were happy. Their laughter echoed across the shore. Damian and Chloe walked along the shore. They held hands. They talked about the future. They were planning to adopt a child. A daughter. They had already started the paperwork. Simone sat with my mother. They were deep in conversation. They were laughing. They were crying. They were catching up on years of lo

  • HIS REGRET MY REVENGE   CHAPTER 68 : LILY'S first crush

Lily came home from school one day with a strange look on her face. She was eleven. She was in sixth grade. She had always been confident, always sure of herself. But today, she was quiet. Flustered. Her cheeks were pink. Her eyes were distant. "What's wrong?" I asked. "Nothing." "Nothing? You look like you've seen a ghost." "I haven't seen a ghost. I've seen… something else." "Something else?" "A boy." I tried not to smile. "A boy?" "A boy. In my class. His name is Ethan. He's tall. He's funny. He's smart. He's—" "Handsome?" Lily blushed. Her cheeks turned even pinker. "Maybe." I sat down with her on the couch. "Tell me about Ethan." "He sat next to me in science class. We had to be lab partners. We were supposed to dissect a frog. I was nervous. I didn't want to do it. He was nervous too. He told me he'd never dissected anything before either. We both laughed. And then—" She paused. "He held my hand." "He held your hand?" "To steady me. I was shaking. He said it was o

  • HIS REGRET MY REVENGE   CHAPTER 67 : James's first day of school

James started kindergarten on a Tuesday in September. He was five years old. He was nervous. He was excited. He was terrified. He was all the things a five-year-old should be on his first day of school. His backpack was too big for his small shoulders. His new sneakers squeaked when he walked. His hair was combed neatly, a task that had taken twenty minutes and three attempts. "I don't want to go," he said, clinging to my leg. His grip was surprisingly strong for such a small child. "James, you have to go." "Why?" "Because school is important. You'll learn things. You'll make friends. You'll have fun. You'll discover new things you never even knew existed." "But I don't know anyone." "You know Lily. She'll be there." "Lily is in third grade. She won't be in my class." "True. But she'll be in the same building. You can see her at lunch. You can wave to her in the hallway. You can tell her all about your day when you get home." James considered this. His grip on my leg loosen

  • HIS REGRET MY REVENGE   CHAPTER 65 : Victor's grave

Julian visited Victor's grave alone. He didn't tell me he was going. He just left. A note on the kitchen table. His handwriting was shaky. "I need to do this. I need to face him one last time. I'll be back soon. Don't worry." But I did worry. I always worried. So I followed. I found him standing in front of the headstone. The cemetery was quiet. The grass was green. The sky was blue. Birds sang in the trees. It was peaceful. "Julian," I said softly. He turned. "How did you find me?" "Lily told me." "She knew?" "She always knows. She's always known." He looked back at the headstone. Victor Thorne. Beloved father. Beloved husband. The lies carved in stone. "I don't know why I came here," he said. "Yes, you do." "Why?" "To say goodbye. To finally let go. To close the door." He was silent for a long time. The wind blew through the trees. The birds sang. The world kept turning. "I hated him," Julian said. His voice was quiet. "For so long. For my whole life. I hated him mo

  • HIS REGRET MY REVENGE   CHAPTER 7 : The engagement dinner

Damian's family mansion sat on a hill overlooking the city like a throne overlooking peasants. White marble columns. A fountain with actual gold fish. Guards at every gate. I had dressed carefully—black silk dress, minimal jewelry, hair loose. Not too rich. Not too poor. Just dangerous enough.

  • HIS REGRET MY REVENGE   CHAPTER 29 : The secret partner

Marcus called on day eleven of his investigation. "I found something," he said. His voice was tight. Urgent. "You're going to want to see this in person. Not over the phone. Not through email. Face to face." Julian and I went to his office together. The drive was silent. The city blurred past

  • HIS REGRET MY REVENGE   CHAPTER 5: The deal with the devil

Damian's penthouse felt different tonight. Warmer. Or maybe I was just colder on the inside. He handed me a glass of wine—red, expensive, the kind Julian used to drink while ignoring me at dinner—and sat across from me on the leather couch. The city glittered below us. Somewhere out there, Juli

  • HIS REGRET MY REVENGE   CHAPTER 3: Trap

I didn't go home to Damian that night. I sat in my car in the hospital parking lot, staring at Julian's text message: Meet me at the old penthouse. Bring the divorce papers. Let's talk about a truce. It was a trap. Of course it was a trap. But my mother was sleeping peacefully for the first t
