Elena Carter barely slept that night.

Every time she closed her eyes, she heard the doctor's voice repeating the amount her father needed for treatment. Then she remembered Alexander Sterling's cold gray eyes and the mysterious offer he had made.

A proposition that could solve every financial problem you're facing.

The words followed her all the way home.

At six the next morning, Elena stood in the tiny kitchen of her apartment, staring at the untouched cup of coffee on the table. Her younger brother, Ethan, sat opposite her, watching her with worried eyes.

"You're not going to work today?" he asked.

"I have to go somewhere first."

"Where?"

Elena hesitated.

"To see someone who might be able to help Dad."

Ethan put down his spoon.

"Someone who can lend us money?"

"Something like that."

"Elena, please tell me you're not planning to do anything dangerous."

She looked at him and forced a smile.

"I'm not. I promise."

But even as she said it, she wondered whether that promise was one she could keep.

At eight fifteen, Elena left the apartment and took the bus toward the financial district.

The closer she got to the towering glass buildings, the more out of place she felt. Her simple blue dress had been carefully ironed, and her shoes were clean, but nothing she wore could hide the difference between her world and the world Alexander Sterling occupied.

His company headquarters stood above the surrounding buildings like a monument to wealth.

STERLING GROUP.

The silver letters shone above the revolving entrance doors.

Elena stopped on the pavement and looked up.

"One meeting," she whispered to herself. "That's all this is."

She stepped inside.

The lobby was enormous, with polished marble floors, crystal lights, and employees who moved with the confidence of people who had never worried about paying their next bill.

A receptionist looked up as Elena approached.

"Good morning. How may I help you?"

"I'm here to see Mr. Alexander Sterling."

"Do you have an appointment?"

Elena pulled the black business card from her handbag.

"He asked me to come at nine."

The receptionist examined the card. Her expression changed almost immediately.

"Please wait here."

She picked up the telephone, spoke quietly, and then gestured toward a private elevator.

"Mr. Sterling is expecting you. Take this elevator to the thirty-second floor. His assistant will meet you."

Elena swallowed.

She had expected questions, perhaps even a refusal.

Instead, Alexander had arranged everything in advance.

That made her more nervous than she wanted to admit.

The elevator doors opened onto a quiet corridor lined with glass offices.

A tall man in a charcoal suit approached her.

"Miss Carter?"

"Yes."

"I'm James, Mr. Sterling's executive assistant. Please follow me."

He led her to a set of double doors and opened one.

Alexander's office was larger than Elena's entire apartment.

One wall consisted of floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city. A dark wooden desk stood near the center, and behind it Alexander sat reviewing documents on a tablet.

He didn't look up immediately.

"You're five minutes early," he said.

Elena glanced at the clock.

"It's nine o'clock."

"Exactly."

She frowned. "Then I'm on time."

"An interesting way of looking at punctuality."

He set the tablet down and finally raised his eyes to hers.

"Sit."

Elena remained standing.

"I would prefer to know why I'm here first."

Something resembling amusement crossed his face.

"You always argue this much?"

"Only when someone treats me like an employee who cannot think for herself."

"You're standing in my office because I invited you."

"And I came because you said you could help my father. I believe that makes us even."

Alexander leaned back in his chair.

For several seconds, he simply studied her.

Then he pointed to the chair opposite his desk.

"Sit down, Miss Carter. This conversation concerns a serious business arrangement."

Elena reluctantly took the seat.

Alexander pressed a button on his desk. A moment later, James entered carrying a folder and placed it in front of her.

"What is this?" Elena asked.

"Open it."

Inside were several documents, a photograph of a beautiful mansion, and a printed financial statement.

Elena's eyes widened when she saw the figures.

It was enough to pay her father's outstanding medical bills many times over.

Her hands began to tremble.

"What am I looking at?"

"The financial terms of my offer."

"Why would you offer me this much money?"

"Because I need something from you."

She slowly closed the folder.

"Then tell me what it is."

Alexander stood and walked toward the windows. His reflection appeared against the glass, tall and imposing.

"My grandfather established Sterling Group nearly sixty years ago. Under his leadership, the company became one of the most powerful private investment firms in the country. Before his death, he established a condition concerning the family's controlling shares."

Elena listened carefully.

"What condition?"

"That I must be married before my thirty-fifth birthday to qualify for the next stage of succession."

She blinked.

"You're thirty-four."

"Very observant."

"And you need a wife before your next birthday?"

"Correct."

Elena stared at him, waiting for the punchline.

It never came.

"You're telling me that you want to get married because of a business condition?"

"I don't expect you to understand the complexities of my family's arrangements."

"You're right. I don't understand them. But I understand that marriage is supposed to mean something."

Alexander turned away from the window.

"Marriage means different things to different people."

"Not to me."

"Then you may be disappointed by how the world operates."

Elena stood.

"I think this meeting is over."

"Your father's hospital bill is due in seven days."

She froze.

Alexander's voice remained calm.

"I have reviewed the financial situation you described to the hospital this morning. Your father needs immediate treatment, and you cannot afford it."

A chill ran through her.

"You investigated me?"

"I investigate every person I consider entering into a sensitive arrangement with me."

"I'm not a business deal!"

"Today, you are."

His words struck harder than she expected.

Elena gripped the folder.

"You have no right to dig into my family's private affairs."

"Perhaps not. But I have the resources to solve the problem that brought you here."

He returned to his desk.

"I am offering you a twelve-month marriage contract. I will pay your father's medical expenses, settle your family's outstanding debts, and provide you with a generous monthly allowance. In return, you will accompany me to public events, maintain the appearance of a genuine marriage, and remain married to me for the full twelve months."

Elena stared at him in disbelief.

"You cannot be serious."

"I rarely joke about contracts."

"And after twelve months?"

"We divorce. You receive the agreed financial settlement, and we go our separate ways."

She let out a disbelieving laugh.

"You want to buy a wife."

"I want a practical solution to a practical problem."

"And what happens when people discover the truth?"

"They won't."

"What about love?"

Alexander's expression hardened.

"There will be no love."

The certainty in his voice silenced her.

He continued.

"No romantic expectations. No demands for affection. You will have your own bedroom, your own personal space, and the freedom to pursue your interests within the terms of the agreement. I will not interfere with your private life unless it threatens the arrangement."

Elena felt sick.

He had reduced marriage to a list of conditions, as though he were negotiating the purchase of a company.

"And what do I get to decide?" she asked.

Alexander looked at her.

"You may negotiate the terms before signing."

That surprised her.

"You would actually allow me to change your contract?"

"I prefer agreements that both parties understand."

For the first time since entering the office, Elena saw something she could use: an opening.

She took a breath.

"My father's treatment must be paid directly to the hospital. I want written proof that the money will be available before I sign anything."

"Agreed."

"I will not give up my job or be treated like a prisoner in your house."

"You may continue working, provided your schedule doesn't conflict with agreed public appearances."

"And my brother?"

"What about him?"

"He stays out of this. You don't get to control where he lives, who he sees, or what he does."

Alexander regarded her for a moment.

"Agreed."

Elena was startled by how quickly he accepted her conditions.

She had expected him to argue.

"Why me?" she asked suddenly.

His expression changed.

It was subtle, but she noticed it: a brief tightening around his eyes, a pause before he answered.

"Because you need the money, and you have no connection to the people who normally compete for my family's influence."

"That sounds like a convenient explanation."

"It is the truth."

"Is it the whole truth?"

Alexander's eyes turned colder.

"Be careful, Elena. Curiosity can make an arrangement unnecessarily complicated."

She hated the way he said her name, as though he had already decided she belonged in his world.

But she hated the thought of losing her father even more.

She looked down at the documents again.

Twelve months.

A year of pretending to be the wife of a man she could barely tolerate.

A year of living in a mansion where every room would remind her that she had traded her freedom for money.

Could she really do it?

Her father's face appeared in her mind. She remembered his smile when he told her that he was proud of the woman she had become. She remembered his hands, worn from years of honest work, and the way he had always tried to protect his children from the worst of their circumstances.

She couldn't abandon him now.

Not when there might still be a chance to save him.

"One more condition," she said.

Alexander waited.

"If you ever use my father's illness against me to force me to do something outside this agreement, the contract ends."

He studied her in silence.

Then he extended his hand.

"Agreed."

Elena looked at his hand.

It was an absurd moment.

A few hours earlier, she had been serving champagne in his hotel. Now she was negotiating a marriage with him.

She placed her hand in his.

His fingers closed around hers, warm and firm.

For one brief second, neither of them moved.

Elena felt an unexpected spark travel up her arm. She immediately pulled away, annoyed with herself.

Alexander's expression remained unreadable, but his gaze lingered on her face.

"James will prepare the revised agreement," he said. "Read every page before signing. I expect you to understand what you're agreeing to."

"I will."

"And Elena?"

She turned toward the door.

"Yes?"

"Once you sign that contract, the world will see you as my wife. People will judge you, investigate you, and try to discover what you know about me. Some will be polite. Others won't."

"Is that supposed to frighten me?"

"No. It's supposed to prepare you."

Elena lifted her chin.

"I've survived worse than rich people gossiping about me."

For the first time, Alexander's mouth curved into the faintest hint of a smile.

"We'll see."

Two hours later, Elena sat in a quiet hospital waiting area with the signed agreement inside her handbag.

She had negotiated the terms with James and received written confirmation that the hospital would be paid directly. The first payment had already been arranged.

Her father's doctor approached her with a relieved expression.

"The hospital has received confirmation of payment, Miss Carter. We can begin the next stage of treatment this afternoon."

Elena covered her mouth.

"Thank you," she whispered.

The doctor smiled gently.

"You should speak to your father when he wakes. I think he'll be glad to see you."

When the doctor left, Elena sat down and cried.

For the first time in weeks, she could breathe without feeling that the walls were closing in around her.

She had saved her father.

At least, she had given him a chance.

But her relief didn't last long.

Her phone vibrated.

An unfamiliar number appeared on the screen.

She answered cautiously.

"Hello?"

"Elena Carter?"

A woman's voice.

"Yes. Who is this?"

"You don't know me, but you need to listen carefully."

Elena straightened.

"What is this about?"

"The man you're about to marry is not the man you think he is."

Her stomach tightened.

"Who are you?"

"Someone who knows Alexander Sterling better than you ever will."

"Then tell me what's going on."

The woman gave a bitter laugh.

"If you sign that contract, you may be making the biggest mistake of your life."

Elena glanced at her handbag, where the signed agreement rested.

"It's a little late for that."

Silence followed.

Then the woman spoke again, her voice suddenly urgent.

"Listen to me. Alexander didn't choose you because you were desperate for money."

Elena's heart began to pound.

"Then why did he choose me?"

"Because of your father."

Before Elena could ask another question, the call ended.

She stared at her phone.

Her father?

What did her father have to do with Alexander Sterling?

And why had the woman sounded so frightened?

A message appeared on her screen a few seconds later.

UNKNOWN NUMBER: Ask Alexander what happened to Daniel Carter ten years ago. Then ask him why he has been looking for your family.

Elena's blood ran cold.

Daniel Carter.

Her older brother, who had disappeared from their lives years ago after a bitter family argument, had always been a painful subject in her household. Her father refused to discuss him, and every attempt Elena made to find him had led nowhere.

How could Alexander know anything about Daniel?

She looked toward the hospital room where her father was receiving treatment.

For the first time, the money in her handbag felt less like salvation and more like a warning.

She had entered Alexander Sterling's world to save her father.

But perhaps the billionaire had been waiting for her long before she ever walked into his hotel.

And perhaps the marriage contract was never just about marriage.
