Rain hammered against the windows of the Sterling Grand Hotel, turning the city lights into blurry streaks of gold and silver.

Elena Carter stood outside the presidential ballroom, clutching a white envelope so tightly that its edges bent beneath her fingers.

Inside it was a medical report.

Her father's condition was worsening, and the hospital had given her only seven days to pay the outstanding bill before transferring him to a public facility with limited treatment options.

Seven days.

She had repeated those words so many times that they no longer sounded real.

Seven days to find money she didn't have.

Seven days to save the only parent she had left.

Seven days before everything she had worked for might collapse.

"Miss Carter!"

Elena flinched as her supervisor, Mrs. Collins, hurried toward her in a black uniform and uncomfortable heels.

"Why are you standing here?" the older woman demanded. "The guests inside are waiting for champagne. Do you expect me to do your job for you?"

"I'm sorry, ma'am. I was just checking the delivery list."

"Then check it while moving!" Mrs. Collins snapped. "And please, for once, try not to look like someone attending her own funeral. Our guests pay thousands of dollars for one evening. They don't come here to stare at miserable faces."

Elena swallowed the sharp response that rose in her throat.

She needed this job.

That was the only reason she endured the insults, the exhausting shifts, and the customers who looked at her as though poverty were a contagious disease.

"Yes, ma'am."

"Good. Now take this champagne to the private lounge. Mr. Sterling is expecting it."

Elena's fingers tightened around the silver tray.

Mr. Sterling.

Even people who had never met him knew that name.

Alexander Sterling, the thirty-four-year-old billionaire who owned the hotel, several luxury apartment towers, and one of the most powerful investment companies in the country.

He was handsome, wealthy, and notoriously difficult to please.

Some called him brilliant.

Others called him heartless.

Elena had never cared enough to form an opinion. Men like Alexander Sterling belonged to a world so far removed from hers that she might as well have been living on another planet.

She picked up the champagne and headed toward the private lounge.

The moment she pushed open the door, she heard a woman's voice.

"You cannot be serious, Alexander!"

Elena stopped.

A tall blonde woman stood near the window, wearing a glittering silver dress. Her face was flushed with anger, and a diamond ring sparkled on her finger.

Alexander Sterling stood opposite her, his hands in his trouser pockets.

He wore a black suit that fitted him perfectly, a white shirt, and a dark tie. His expression was so cold that Elena wondered whether he had ever smiled in his life.

"I don't repeat myself, Victoria," he said.

Victoria let out a bitter laugh.

"You promised me we would get married this year. Your family expects it. The board expects it. Everyone knows we're supposed to be together!"

"Then everyone will have to adjust their expectations."

"You cannot throw away six years because you're suddenly bored!"

Alexander's jaw tightened.

"Be careful, Victoria."

"Or what?" she challenged. "You'll buy another company and pretend you haven't destroyed another person's life?"

For the first time, something shifted in his expression.

It wasn't sadness.

It was anger, cold and controlled.

"Our relationship ended the moment you decided that marrying me was more important than loving me."

Victoria stared at him.

Then her eyes narrowed.

"You'll regret this."

She snatched her handbag from the table and stormed toward the door.

Elena barely had time to step aside before Victoria brushed past her.

"Watch where you're standing!" Victoria snapped.

"I'm sorry."

Victoria didn't answer. Her heels clicked furiously against the marble floor until the sound disappeared.

Elena released a breath and entered the lounge.

Alexander had turned toward the window.

"Your champagne, sir," she said quietly.

He didn't respond.

She placed the tray on the table, hoping to leave before he noticed her.

"What's your name?"

His voice stopped her.

"Elena Carter, sir."

"How long have you worked here?"

"Eight months."

"And how much did you hear?"

Her stomach tightened.

"Excuse me?"

Alexander turned.

His eyes were a startling shade of gray, sharp enough to make her feel as though he could see every lie she had ever told.

"Don't insult my intelligence. You were standing outside that door. How much did you hear?"

Elena lifted her chin.

"Enough to know that your personal life is none of my business."

Silence.

For a moment, she wondered whether she had just lost her job.

Then Alexander slowly raised an eyebrow.

"You're either very brave or very foolish."

"Perhaps I'm simply tired, sir."

"Tired?"

"Yes. Some of us have problems that money cannot solve."

The words escaped before she could stop them.

Alexander studied her face.

"And what problem do you have that money cannot solve, Miss Carter?"

Elena regretted speaking.

"My problems are not your concern."

"You're right."

He reached for his glass.

"They aren't."

She turned to leave.

"Wait."

She stopped, irritation burning beneath her skin.

"Yes, sir?"

"How much do you earn here each month?"

She stared at him.

"What does that have to do with anything?"

"Answer the question."

"Not enough to survive comfortably."

"That wasn't what I asked."

Elena's patience snapped.

"Then perhaps you should ask someone who enjoys answering questions that have nothing to do with them."

She walked out before he could respond.

Her heart hammered against her ribs.

She had just spoken to Alexander Sterling as though he were an ordinary man.

Worse, she had practically challenged him.

If Mrs. Collins heard about this, Elena would be unemployed before midnight.

But for the first time that evening, she felt something other than fear.

She felt proud.

She had stood up for herself.

And then her phone rang.

The hospital.

Her pride vanished.

"Hello?"

"Miss Carter?" a doctor asked. "I'm calling about your father."

Elena pressed the phone against her ear.

"Is he all right?"

There was a pause.

"His condition has deteriorated. We need to begin the next stage of treatment as soon as possible."

"Please," she whispered. "Give me a little more time. I'm trying to get the money."

"We understand, but we cannot delay indefinitely."

"How much do I need to pay?"

The doctor told her.

Elena's knees nearly buckled.

It was more money than she could earn in several years.

She ended the call and stood motionless in the corridor, staring at nothing.

Her father was all she had.

She couldn't lose him.

Not after losing her mother when she was twelve. Not after spending years working and studying to build a better life for them both.

She pressed a hand over her mouth as tears threatened to fall.

"Miss Carter."

She turned sharply.

Alexander Sterling stood several feet away, watching her.

She quickly wiped her eyes.

"I'm fine."

"I didn't ask whether you were fine."

"Then what do you want?"

He glanced at the phone in her hand.

"Money is your problem, isn't it?"

Elena stiffened.

"You were listening?"

"You were standing in the middle of my corridor."

"It's a public corridor."

"It's my hotel."

"Congratulations."

For one brief second, Alexander looked almost surprised.

Then his expression hardened again.

"Meet me in my office tomorrow morning at nine."

She laughed in disbelief.

"And why would I do that?"

"Because I have a proposition for you."

"I'm not interested."

"You haven't heard it."

"I don't need to. I don't accept favors from men who think they can order everyone around."

Alexander stepped closer, his voice dropping.

"Good. Because I don't offer favors."

He took a black business card from his pocket and held it out.

"I offer contracts."

Elena looked at the card but didn't take it.

"What kind of contract?"

His gray eyes locked onto hers.

"One that could solve every financial problem you're facing."

She should have walked away.

She should have told him to keep his money and his arrogance.

But then she remembered the doctor's voice.

We cannot delay indefinitely.

Slowly, she took the card.

Alexander watched her fingers close around it.

"Nine o'clock," he repeated. "Don't be late."

"And if I refuse?"

He turned away.

"Then you'll continue fighting a battle you cannot afford to lose."

Elena stood frozen as he walked down the corridor.

She hated him already.

She hated his confidence, his cold eyes, and the way he spoke as though the entire world existed to obey him.

But as she looked down at the expensive black card in her hand, she realized something terrifying.

For the first time in her life, the man she disliked most might be the only person capable of saving her father.

And she had no idea what he would demand in return.

Heavy curtains framed tall windows, a crystal lamp stood beside the bed, and a wardrobe occupied almost half the wall. Someone had placed fresh flowers on a table near the window.Everything was expensive.Everything was perfect. And I hated it.I didn't want silk sheets or a private bath
