***SELENA'S POV***

I still had the message open when I sat down on my bed.

**Unknown: You home?**

I knew it was him. I didn't even need to ask.

I typed, deleted, typed again.

**Selena: Yes. Why?**

The three dots appeared, disappeared, then came back.

**Var: Good.**

That was it?

I stared at the screen.

**Selena: That's it?**

**Var: What else do you want?**

Typical.

**Selena: An actual reason would be nice.**

He took longer this time.

**Var: You got home late. Just che

  • HIS TO TORMENT    Still Hate Me?

CHAPTER 11SELENA POVI tried to sleep. I turned the lamp off, pulled the quilt up to my chin, and lay there cataloguing every sound the house made: the radiator ticking, a cousin's laugh floating up the stairwell and getting shushed, a pipe somewhere in the walls clearing its throat like it had something to say. Across the hall, a thin gold line of light still sat under his door. I watched it for what felt like an hour, and it never changed, no shadow crossing it, no footsteps, just a steady stripe on the floorboards like someone had painted it there to dare me.At some point I realized I was holding the note from Grandpa in my fist again. *You're going to need it this week.* I put it on the nightstand, pulled my hair out of its ponytail, and told myself very firmly that I was going to lie still until morning. Then I got up, because apparently my body had stopped consulting me about decisions sometime around Monday. The floor was freezing against my bare feet. I crossed the hallway i

  • HIS TO TORMENT    Var

CHAPTER 10SELENA POVI was still holding the envelope when Var leaned over my shoulder and read the sticky note out loud in a voice of mild interest, which was exactly the thing Grandma Hayes had told him not to do. "Buy yourself something silly. Huh. He never gave me a twenty." I folded the note against my chest and turned around so fast that my glasses slid down my nose. "He gave you a Buick," I said. "He gave you a Buick for your sixteenth birthday and you wrapped it around a mailbox in under a week." Var considered this with great dignity. "The mailbox came out of nowhere." "It was a mailbox, Var. It has never once come out of anywhere." Grandma Hayes made a sound that might have been a cough and might have been the first laugh she'd allowed herself all day, and then she tapped her cane twice against the floorboards and pointed it toward the kitchen. "Out, both of you. I'll be in the sitting room in ten minutes and I expect you there. Selena, put the money somewhere a cousin can'

  • HIS TO TORMENT    The Funeral

CHAPTER 9SELENA POVThe service ended with a final prayer and the soft shuffle of two hundred people standing at once. I stayed seated a second longer than I needed to, staring at the polished back of the casket, because the alternative was looking at Var's hand resting on the pew an inch from mine, where it had been since he let go of me.He stood first and waited for me like we had rehearsed it in the car. When I got up, his palm returned to the small of my back as if it had never left, light and almost polite, but I felt it through the thin cotton of my dress like a hot coin pressed against my spine. Aunt May cut through the aisle toward us with a tissue balled in her fist, her eyes red but her posture already switching over to hostess mode."You're both coming to the house after, of course. Your grandmother insisted. There's ham, there's three kinds of casserole, and she wants the whole family under one roof where she can see us."Var's fingers pressed once against my spine. "Wou

  • HIS TO TORMENT    The Funeral

CHAPTER 8SELENA POVI woke up to the sound of my phone buzzing under the pillow. The room was still dark, that thin blue dark that comes before sunrise, and my neck ached from sleeping at a strange angle. I had fallen asleep facing the door, I realized, one arm hanging off the edge of the mattress like I'd been reaching for something. For a second I forgot where I was. Then the night before rushed back all at once: the unlocked door, the sound of his footsteps passing, the way I had lain there like an idiot, listening, waiting for something that never came.I fished the phone out and squinted at the screen.**Mom:** Call me as soon as you wake up. It's important. My stomach dropped. Mom never texted like that. Mom texted in full sentences with exclamation points and sometimes a little flower emoji she'd learned from my stepdad. This was flat and bare, and it sat on the screen like a held breath. I sat up and dialed before I could talk myself out of it.She answered on the first ring.

  • HIS TO TORMENT    The Unknown

CHAPTER 7SELENA POVI barely slept.Every time I closed my eyes I saw the same thing: Var's eyes locked on mine while that girl was on her knees in front of him. The way he told her to go harder just because I was watching. The way he looked at me afterward, like he already knew exactly what my body had done.I lay there until the ceiling went from black to gray, listening to the old house settle around me. Pipes ticking. The refrigerator humming two floors down. Once, somewhere around three, a floorboard creaked in the hall outside my door, and I stopped breathing completely until the sound faded. It was nothing. It was probably nothing. I still didn't sleep after that.By the time morning light came through the curtains my head hurt and my stomach felt tight, like I'd swallowed something I couldn't digest. I stayed in the shower longer than usual, letting the water run over my face, trying to wash the memory off my skin. It didn't work. When I finally stepped out and wiped the fog

I tossed the phone beside me and reached for my charger. ---The next morning Sasha was already waiting by the bus stop, coffee in both hands. “Okay, spill. Why do you look like you didn’t sleep?” I took one of the coffees. “Var texted me last night.” She almost choked. “What?” “He asked if I was home.” Sasha’s eyes went wide. “And you answered?” “Obviously. Then he just said ‘good’ and basically told me to stop asking qu
