[The Next Morning]

Morning sunlight slipped through the curtains, spreading softly across the bedroom.

Katie woke slowly, her mind taking a few seconds to register where she was. She had fallen asleep beside Damien, and for a moment, the quietness of the room made everything that had happened the previous night feel distant.

She turned her head and found Damien still asleep.

His usually controlled expression had disappeared completely, replaced by a rare peacefulness that Katie had hardly ever

Five years later, the school gate at St. Aldric's, Katie still slowed when she saw them."We're twenty minutes early," Damien said, killing the engine. He checked his watch, then looked at her with a guilty smile. "Don't say it.""I wasn't going to say anything." She unbuckled her seatbelt, laughing. "You rescheduled a board meeting for this. You told Tristan the company could survive without you for one afternoon, and I'm told he cried a little.""He was moved by my priorities.""He was relieved. He's been trying to get you out of that office for five years."They crossed the road together. Autumn had scattered the pavement with gold, and the other parents were only beginning to gather, mothers with strollers and a grandfather with a paper bag of sweets. Katie took her place beside the railings, a small gift bag swinging from one hand, and Damien stood close enough that his sleeve brushed hers. He had grey at his temples now, and she loved it."She'll be so excited," he said. "Robbi

The garden at the Stark estate held forty chairs, and Katie had argued for thirty. Damien had won the last ten by pointing out that Samantha alone had invited four classmates. At nine that morning she stood at the upstairs window in her robe, watching Gerald and Tristan fight a losing battle with the arch of white roses. Behind her, Rita fastened the last of forty tiny pearl buttons down her spine, and her fingers kept pausing."I'm sorry," Rita said. "I keep thinking of the first time I came to this house, and how I couldn't look you in the eye. And now I'm doing up your wedding dress.""Then do it slowly," Katie said, smiling at the glass. "I'd rather have you shaking than anyone else steady."Rita laughed through her nose and wiped her eyes with the back of her wrist. "You'll ruin your face before the photographer even arrives.""Then I'll be the first bride in history to blame her own happiness."A small knock, and Samantha burst in wearing a pale yellow dress and a crown of daisi

Damien asked Donald to come to the study on a Sunday morning, and he asked Katie to come ten minutes later, which Katie only understood when she opened the door.Sunlight lay across the desk in long gold bars. Donald sat in his wheelchair beside it, a blanket over his knees, and Damien stood behind the desk with a thick bound document in front of him. Katie knew the cover before she saw the title. She had signed the last page of it with a hand that wouldn't stop shaking."Close the door, love," Damien said. "I want you both here.""What is this?" Katie asked, though her heart had already started to climb."A debt." He rested his palm flat on the cover. "I've owed it for a long time, and I'd like to pay it in front of the one person who saw how it began."Donald's brows drew together. "Damien.""Father, you told me the night we drew it up that I was making a mistake. You didn't say it aloud, but I saw it in your face." Damien opened the contract to the first page. "You were right. It w

Katie was folding the last of the baby's blankets when she heard the car in the drive, and then three sets of footsteps on the stairs, two quick and one slow, with the soft thump of a wheelchair being carried up between Gerald and a driver. She did not turn around. She laid the blanket in the open suitcase, smoothed it flat, and listened to her husband stop in the doorway."Katie.""I've nearly finished," she said. "I only need his sleepers. Tomorrow was the deadline, so I'm early.""Look at me. Please."She turned. Damien stood there breathless, his jacket rumpled, one hand pressed flat against his chest as if to keep something in. Behind him, Donald sat in his chair with a cedar box in his lap, and Gerald and Tristan hovered at the back of the corridor, trying not to look as though they were listening."I need you to hear this before you pack another thing," Damien said. His voice shook. "It was never binding. Not for one hour of one day. Theresa lied to us. She lied to my father f

Tristan did not sleep that night. At two in the morning he was still at the long table in his study, surrounded by security logs and a laptop whose fan had begun to whine, when a timestamp on the third reel of footage made him sit very straight. He watched it four times. Then he picked up his phone and called a man who did not usually answer before dawn.By ten the next morning, he was standing in the doorway of the sitting room with a folder pressed against his chest. Damien sat on the sofa in yesterday's shirt, unshaven, hollow-eyed, staring at the cold fireplace. Katie's door upstairs had been closed since the evening before. Donald sat in his wheelchair near the window, a blanket over his knees, and Gerald leaned against the wall with his arms crossed and his jaw tight."Sir," Tristan said. "I need ten minutes. I think I can end this."Damien did not look up. "Unless you can undo a promise, Tristan, I don't know what you could possibly...""I can't undo anything. I can show you

Brian came on the fourth day, with a hand-knitted blue blanket he'd clearly bought and clearly wished he'd made. Rita hung back in the doorway of the nursery, the lemon biscuits in her arms again, while Samantha shot across the room like something released from a spring."Where is he? Where's my brother?""Shoes, Sammy," Brian said."Dad, I can't, I'm too excited." She kicked them off anyway and skidded to a stop beside the crib. Katie sat in the rocking chair with the baby against her shoulder, still pale around the eyes, her hair in a loose braid. "Aunt Katie, you said it was a girl.""I said we didn't know.""I said it was a girl." Samantha's face fell, then recovered with astonishing speed. "That's fine. I'll teach a brother to catch frogs too. Boys are better at it, probably. They don't mind the smell."Brian laughed, rough and surprised, and crossed to Katie. He stood a moment looking down at the small sleeping face. "He's beautiful, Katie. He has your mouth.""Everyone says h
