Chapter 2

Author: Five 67
"I'm sorry."

I lowered my head. My voice was raw. "I made a mess. I'll go."

As I turned to leave, my hand instinctively closed around my right wrist. Hidden beneath the faded cuff of my sleeve was a tarnished silver bracelet, worn smooth from years of wear.

Nicole had bought it for me ten years ago with her very first scholarship check.

I dragged myself toward the exit, one heavy step at a time. Through the crowd, I caught a glimpse of Stuart Langford sitting in the corner of the VIP section.

He was the one who performed the surgery ten years ago, the one who transplanted my left kidney into Nicole.

Dr. Langford sat there with reddened eyes. He stood up quickly and came to me, steadying me by the arm and walking me out of the banquet hall.

The moment we stepped through the doors, the cold night air hit me like a wall.

I could not hold on anymore. My body gave out against the frigid stone wall, and I slid to the ground.

I pressed a hand over my mouth and started coughing violently. A body missing a kidney had no business doing ten years of manual labor, and mine had long since given out on me.

I did not remember how I made it back to my basement apartment.

I pushed open the rusted iron door, and the sharp smell of mold hit me in the face. I did not even have the strength to flip the light switch. I felt my way along the wall in the dark and collapsed onto the bare wooden bed.

Cold sweat had soaked through my thin shirt and clung to my back. My hands were shaking as I fumbled through the beaten-up cardboard box on the nightstand and found two cheap painkillers.

The kettle was empty.

I tipped my head back and forced the pills down dry.

The rough tablets scraped down my throat and triggered a wave of violent gagging. I curled into a ball and bit down hard on the corner of the yellowed blanket, clenching until the taste of blood filled my mouth.

When the pain finally eased, my fingers found the silver bracelet on my wrist.

Engraved on the inside were ‘Q & N’, our initials.

The cold metal dragged me back to that desperate afternoon ten years ago.

Nicole had been lying in the ICU with end-stage kidney failure. The doctor sat me down and told me she had a month left at best.

I could not sleep. I went from hospital to hospital to get tested. The doctors told me I was the only match. However, I knew her too well.

She was proud to her core and stubborn beyond reason. If she found out I traded my kidney for her life, she would have ripped the tubes out and waited to die before she ever let the doctors wheel her into that operating room.

The only way to make her fight to live was to become the villain.

I had the divorce papers drawn up that same night and brought them to her bedside.

"Nicole, let's end this."

I dug my nails into my own palm and forced my expression neutral, refusing to look at the shock in her eyes.

"Your treatment is a bottomless pit. I'm still young. I don't want to spend the rest of my life tied to someone who's about to die. Stop dragging me down."

I would never forget the way she looked at me. It was like glass cracking piece by piece, filled with nothing but despair and disbelief.

She cried the whole time, her hand trembling as she signed the papers. Then she pointed at the door and told me to get out.

The second I turned around, my tears hit the floor.

I took those signed papers and walked straight into the operating room at the end of the hall.

The post-surgery infection gave me a fever so high I nearly did not make it.

After she was discharged, I kept my distance and watched from the sidelines as she got a little stronger every day.

I told myself that as long as I stayed far enough away, everything would fade into the past on its own. As long as she was alive, no amount of suffering on my end was too much.

The late summer sun was brutal and blinding.

A community health fair was in full swing, the air thick and stagnant without a trace of wind. I wore an oversized red volunteer vest and gritted my teeth as I hauled the 15th crate of specialty medication. Each one weighed close to forty-five pounds.

Before the last word left her lips, her hand fell limp. She lost consciousness. The red light above the emergency room stayed on for thirteen hours straight.I sat in the wheelchair. The blood on my hands had long since dried, crusted and flaking like rust.Dr. Langford tried to get me to rest, but I sat there like a statue, my eyes locked on those closed doors. It was only at that moment that I had to admit the truth. No matter how many times I told myself I wanted nothing more to do with her, when she was actually dying in front of me, the pain in my chest was more than I could bear.At 5:00 AM, the emergency room doors finally opened. The attending physician stepped out, exhaustion carved into every line of his face."She made it."Three days later, Nicole was transferred from the ICU into a regular room. When she woke up, I was sitting beside her bed.The moment she saw me, the hollow look in her eyes lit up in an instant. However, a second later, she shrank under the cove

I gripped the bedsheet until my knuckles went white, my eyes going cold.Just as one of the bodyguards was about to force my hand onto the paper, the door to the room exploded inward.Nicole walked in with over a dozen of her own security team at her back. She did not even glance at the check. She picked it up and tore it to pieces."Ms... Ms. Thatcher..."Nicole turned to Mrs. Carmichael."$10 million? You think the Carmichael family's pocket change can buy my husband's life?""Nicole Thatcher! You'd go to war with us over a cripple?" the old woman spat."Go to war? Your family isn't worth the effort."Nicole looked down at her with cold disdain."Half an hour ago, the charity foundation severed all ties with Carmichael Group. As for Julian..."Nicole smiled, and there was nothing warm in it."He tried to assault an officer and run from being held. They broke both his legs. He'll spend the rest of his sentence in a wheelchair."Mrs. Carmichael's eyes rolled back, and she

Nicole leaned down and pressed her lips close to my ear, trembling as she whispered a single sentence. The flatline on the monitor flickered with one small, miraculous blip, and then a second. The attending physician's eyes went wide, and he shouted at the top of his lungs, "We've got a heartbeat! Push one milligram of epinephrine! Get ready for round two!"The nurses pulled Nicole out of the room by force. She collapsed onto the cold floor outside, covered her face, and let out a cry so raw and suffocated it barely sounded human.Three hours later, the emergency room doors opened again.I had made it, but the look the doctor gave Nicole held no relief."Ms. Thatcher, we saved him, but his right kidney has completely lost function. He'll need dialysis for the rest of his life. His body will be so weakened that even a common cold could be fatal."The doctor reached into his pocket and pulled out a battered notebook."We found this sewn into the lining of his old coat."Nicole

"Nicole Thatcher, you didn't just destroy his body. You destroyed his will to live."Nicole's entire body seized with a violent shudder. She raised her hand and slapped herself hard across the face, leaving a bright red mark on her pale skin. She hit herself again, and again."I'm sorry... Quinn, I'm sorry..."She buried her face in her hands, and her broken, suffocated sobs filled the empty corridor.Right then, a rush of footsteps came from the far end of the hallway. A group of officers escorted Julian toward them, his face drained of all color."Ms. Thatcher, the counterfeit medication case has been resolved."The lead officer's expression was grim. He handed her a copy of the statement."Julian Carmichael directed his people to swap expired drugs into the health fair supplies and frame Mr. Delaney. We've recovered both the surveillance footage and the phone recordings."Julian thrashed against the officers holding him. The moment he saw Nicole, he latched on like she was

"Get away from me!"Nicole's head snapped up, and she shoved Julian back with both hands. Her eyes were shot through with red, like a cornered animal with nowhere left to run."These are official hospital records from Ridgemont General! They've got the hospital letterhead and the attending physician's signature. Tell me how you'd fake that!"Julian stumbled backward, completely rattled. He could not get a single word out.Nicole was shaking from head to toe. She held those few thin pages as though they weighed a thousand pounds."Why..." She whipped her head toward me, and the tears broke free all at once."Quinn, you were supposed to have taken a million dollars and run off with another woman! Why did you lie to me?"Dr. Langford heard that and let out a bitter, furious laugh."A million dollars? Ran off?"He pointed straight at Julian, his voice shaking with rage. "Why don't you ask that fine fiancé of yours?"You were in complete kidney failure. You were dying. If Quinn ha

Nicole stared at the pills on the ground, and her eyes went wide. Years of illness had made her practically a pharmacist. She recognized them instantly. They were a low-grade, high-potency painkillers. The side effects were severe, especially on the kidneys, where the damage was irreversible. No doctor would prescribe them to a normal patient no matter how bad the pain was. That was unless the person taking them no longer cared what happened to their kidneys, or they had no other options left.Nicole's head snapped up. She looked at my face, white as paper, and at the way I kept pressing my hand against my lower back, guarding it as if my life depended on it.A thought so absurd it should have been impossible hit her all at once."Let him go."Nicole spoke suddenly. There was a tremor in her voice that even she had not noticed. The guards froze, but they did not release me."I said, let him go!" Her voice rose sharply. She shoved the nearest guard aside. She dropped to her kne
