Chapter 3

Author: Five 67
There was a long, uneven cobblestone path from the truck to the storage building.

I did not find out until after I was hired that Julian was running this health fair. He had clearly given the supervisor specific instructions to make my life miserable.

All thirty crates had to be moved by me alone. No one was allowed to help.

"Pick up the pace! You think you can slack off on my watch?"

The supervisor stood in the shade with a cup of iced water, barking at me.

I kept my mouth shut. I clenched my back teeth and swallowed the warm, metallic taste crawling up my throat.

The old injury in my lower back felt like a ball of fire. Every step pulled at raw nerves, and the tearing pain sent my vision dark around the edges.

Sweat rolled down my forehead and into my eyes, stinging so badly I could barely keep them open. All I could do was move on instinct, dragging myself forward one mechanical step at a time.

I lost count somewhere around the 20th crate. I vaguely realized when I was on the 25th.

By the time I picked up the last one, my hands were shaking beyond my control. A violent cramp seized the left side of my abdomen, sharp as a spike being driven in.

My knee buckled and the crate nearly slipped out of my hands.

"Careful!"

A firm hand shot out from beside me and caught the bottom of the crate just in time. I turned my head with effort.

Dr. Langford stood there in a white coat, a guest specialist badge hanging from his neck, his face tight with alarm.

"Quinn, are you trying to kill yourself?" He kept his voice low, but I could hear the anger and the ache underneath it.

He reached instinctively for my lower back. The second his fingers brushed the old scar, I sucked in a sharp breath, and my whole body flinched.

The color drained from Dr. Langford's face.

He was about to say something when a cold voice cut in from behind.

"Quinn Delaney, so now you're pulling the sympathy card for money?"

I turned around stiffly.

Nicole stood a few steps away in a sharp business suit. She was here today to give a talk at the health fair, and a handful of reporters trailed behind her.

She looked at me with open, undisguised contempt.

"What is it this time? Playing weak, or playing pitiful?"

She walked toward me in her heels and looked down at my pale face.

"Should I just hand you a trophy for Best Actor right now?"

I opened my mouth to explain, but the cramping in my side surged so violently that I could not force out a single word.

Nicole looked at my face, white as a sheet, and something in her eyes flickered. I saw her hand lift slightly, as if she was about to reach for me on reflex.

However, she pulled it back in the next instant, and the cold mask was in place again.

"Nicole, what's going on?" Julian walked up from behind and slipped an arm around her waist.

He glanced at me. The corner of his mouth curled into a barely visible smirk before he turned to Nicole.

"Don't bother with him. He's just fishing for sympathy. Let's go check out the other side."

Nicole did not move. She stared at me, then looked at Dr. Langford standing beside me.

Dr. Langford was one of the most respected surgeons in the field. Getting an appointment with him was nearly impossible. Why would a man like that be this familiar with a day laborer?

Her brow creased slightly, and something she could not quite name stirred in the back of her mind.

Dr. Langford watched Nicole tear into me with that mocking tone. Then he looked at me, bent over in so much pain I could not even straighten my back.

Ten years of silence and biting his tongue all erupted at once.

"Ms. Thatcher, do you have any idea what he—"

His face went dark. He surged forward a step, ready to lay the truth bare right there.

I used every last shred of strength I had and grabbed his sleeve.

"Dr. Langford!"

Before the last word left her lips, her hand fell limp. She lost consciousness. The red light above the emergency room stayed on for thirteen hours straight.I sat in the wheelchair. The blood on my hands had long since dried, crusted and flaking like rust.Dr. Langford tried to get me to rest, but I sat there like a statue, my eyes locked on those closed doors. It was only at that moment that I had to admit the truth. No matter how many times I told myself I wanted nothing more to do with her, when she was actually dying in front of me, the pain in my chest was more than I could bear.At 5:00 AM, the emergency room doors finally opened. The attending physician stepped out, exhaustion carved into every line of his face."She made it."Three days later, Nicole was transferred from the ICU into a regular room. When she woke up, I was sitting beside her bed.The moment she saw me, the hollow look in her eyes lit up in an instant. However, a second later, she shrank under the cove

I gripped the bedsheet until my knuckles went white, my eyes going cold.Just as one of the bodyguards was about to force my hand onto the paper, the door to the room exploded inward.Nicole walked in with over a dozen of her own security team at her back. She did not even glance at the check. She picked it up and tore it to pieces."Ms... Ms. Thatcher..."Nicole turned to Mrs. Carmichael."$10 million? You think the Carmichael family's pocket change can buy my husband's life?""Nicole Thatcher! You'd go to war with us over a cripple?" the old woman spat."Go to war? Your family isn't worth the effort."Nicole looked down at her with cold disdain."Half an hour ago, the charity foundation severed all ties with Carmichael Group. As for Julian..."Nicole smiled, and there was nothing warm in it."He tried to assault an officer and run from being held. They broke both his legs. He'll spend the rest of his sentence in a wheelchair."Mrs. Carmichael's eyes rolled back, and she

Nicole leaned down and pressed her lips close to my ear, trembling as she whispered a single sentence. The flatline on the monitor flickered with one small, miraculous blip, and then a second. The attending physician's eyes went wide, and he shouted at the top of his lungs, "We've got a heartbeat! Push one milligram of epinephrine! Get ready for round two!"The nurses pulled Nicole out of the room by force. She collapsed onto the cold floor outside, covered her face, and let out a cry so raw and suffocated it barely sounded human.Three hours later, the emergency room doors opened again.I had made it, but the look the doctor gave Nicole held no relief."Ms. Thatcher, we saved him, but his right kidney has completely lost function. He'll need dialysis for the rest of his life. His body will be so weakened that even a common cold could be fatal."The doctor reached into his pocket and pulled out a battered notebook."We found this sewn into the lining of his old coat."Nicole

"Nicole Thatcher, you didn't just destroy his body. You destroyed his will to live."Nicole's entire body seized with a violent shudder. She raised her hand and slapped herself hard across the face, leaving a bright red mark on her pale skin. She hit herself again, and again."I'm sorry... Quinn, I'm sorry..."She buried her face in her hands, and her broken, suffocated sobs filled the empty corridor.Right then, a rush of footsteps came from the far end of the hallway. A group of officers escorted Julian toward them, his face drained of all color."Ms. Thatcher, the counterfeit medication case has been resolved."The lead officer's expression was grim. He handed her a copy of the statement."Julian Carmichael directed his people to swap expired drugs into the health fair supplies and frame Mr. Delaney. We've recovered both the surveillance footage and the phone recordings."Julian thrashed against the officers holding him. The moment he saw Nicole, he latched on like she was

"Get away from me!"Nicole's head snapped up, and she shoved Julian back with both hands. Her eyes were shot through with red, like a cornered animal with nowhere left to run."These are official hospital records from Ridgemont General! They've got the hospital letterhead and the attending physician's signature. Tell me how you'd fake that!"Julian stumbled backward, completely rattled. He could not get a single word out.Nicole was shaking from head to toe. She held those few thin pages as though they weighed a thousand pounds."Why..." She whipped her head toward me, and the tears broke free all at once."Quinn, you were supposed to have taken a million dollars and run off with another woman! Why did you lie to me?"Dr. Langford heard that and let out a bitter, furious laugh."A million dollars? Ran off?"He pointed straight at Julian, his voice shaking with rage. "Why don't you ask that fine fiancé of yours?"You were in complete kidney failure. You were dying. If Quinn ha

Nicole stared at the pills on the ground, and her eyes went wide. Years of illness had made her practically a pharmacist. She recognized them instantly. They were a low-grade, high-potency painkillers. The side effects were severe, especially on the kidneys, where the damage was irreversible. No doctor would prescribe them to a normal patient no matter how bad the pain was. That was unless the person taking them no longer cared what happened to their kidneys, or they had no other options left.Nicole's head snapped up. She looked at my face, white as paper, and at the way I kept pressing my hand against my lower back, guarding it as if my life depended on it.A thought so absurd it should have been impossible hit her all at once."Let him go."Nicole spoke suddenly. There was a tremor in her voice that even she had not noticed. The guards froze, but they did not release me."I said, let him go!" Her voice rose sharply. She shoved the nearest guard aside. She dropped to her kne
