Chapter 1

Belinda's POV

The cold diamonds sent a chill down my chest and my spine. I felt like a fish forcefully taken out of the water as I flopped and thrashed about desperately.

"Did you forget how Alvin died?" I growled at my husband, Aston Powell.

Three years ago, Aston's elder brother, Alvin Powell, had discovered Tamara Davies' affair, and he'd died in a horrible car crash while chasing down the scoundrel.

Aston had been absolutely heartbroken and nearly had Tamara beaten to death, but I was the one who stopped him in time. Instead, he gave orders that she was to be locked up in the chapel to repent for her sins for the rest of her life.

However, now, Aston just sighed and said, "Tamara's been suffering for years. I'm sure that Alvin will have already forgiven her by now."

My daughter, Hailey Powell, then pursed her lips in dissatisfaction while leaning into his embrace.

"Mommy's mean and horrid! She's always so bossy! You're the one who can't get pregnant anymore, and you're still trying to stop Tammy from giving Daddy another baby?

"Daddy! Mommy's too fierce today. I only want to eat Tammy's cooking today."

Aston kissed her hard on the cheek and said, "Alright, then. Go ahead and call Tammy and say that you want her to cook for you."

I watched how Aston and Hailey got along together and gripped the three-month pregnancy test report in my pocket.

It all seemed so ridiculous now.

I knew that Aston never said it blatantly, but he'd always found it a pity that he couldn't have more children even if he wanted to. Hailey also kept bugging us for a little brother or sister.

Everyone thought that I had damaged my uterus when giving birth to Hailey. Even I had thought so myself. However, I deliberately asked the doctor not to disclose to them that I was pregnant once again, just so that I could surprise them both on Hailey's birthday.

However, it wasn't necessary anymore.

When Aston saw that I was refusing to back down, his face turned frigid.

"Are you sure that you want to go against me today?"

I knew what he meant by that.

The people attending Hailey's birthday party today were all prominent figures in Southbay.

My gaze swept over my parents in the crowd. Their faces were filled with worry. Their company, Crawford Group, had been losing money for years, and they were teetering on the brink of bankruptcy. Today was the final deadline for us to pay off several large debts that our family owed.

Several major creditors had also arrived at the venue early on to watch and observe us.

Aston had initially planned to publicly announce today that the Powell family would be injecting capital into Crawford Group to help us through this financial crisis. This was the last chance we had to save ourselves.

I forced my tears back down. I couldn't afford to offend Aston today.

At the very least, I couldn't let myself and the Crawfords become the subject of ridicule amidst the other prominent figures around today.

"I'm sorry. I was wrong," I said shakily, lightly patting him on the shoulder. "I won't cause any trouble for you today. Can't you also please not go and see her? Just announce the capital injection as planned."

Aston had initially begun to smile. However, the moment he heard the second half of my sentence, his expression turned stormy.

Hailey burst into loud sobs.

"You're only apologizing to Daddy because all you want is Daddy's money! Tammy was right! You don't love Daddy or me at all!"

Aston glared coldly at me before picking her up and turning to leave. I did everything I could to stop him.

"No! You can't leave! You promised me!"

Hailey screamed and kept hitting my arm with all of her might. "You're the worst person ever, Mommy! You don't love me at all!"

Yet I loved her the most!

Before I could even say it out loud, Tamara suddenly barged into the venue and shoved me aside.

She was wearing a plain gray dress, and she looked absolutely pained as she picked Hailey up and hugged her.

"Belinda Crawford! Are you out of your mind? Let go of Hailey now!"

During the struggle, the container of food that Tamara had been holding got knocked to the floor. Bits of food were scattered everywhere. Then, I was forcefully shoved to the floor, and a sharp pain shot through my lower abdomen.

However, Aston simply went over to Tamara and stroked her prominently pregnant belly with concern.

"What are you doing here? Didn't I tell you to stay put in the chapel to rest?"

Tamara hugged Hailey with one arm and choked up while staring at the spilled food on the floor.

"Didn't Hailey say that she wanted me to make something for her? I would do anything for her, but unfortunately…"

She then bit her lower lip and took a few steps backward.

"I'm sorry. I overstepped my boundaries. I'll go right back to the chapel now."

Hailey grabbed her hand and tugged her right back, screaming at the top of her lungs, "No! I want Tammy to stay! I want Tammy to celebrate my birthday with me!"

Aston held Tamara in his arms and turned to look at me.

"You don't even care about Hailey as much as Tamara does, Belinda."

His eyes turned red.

"Since that's the case, you can forget completely about the capital injection!"

Third-Person POVAston searched high and low all over Southbay for Belinda, but still found no trace of her. So, he had all of the creditors who saw her last rounded up, and he tortured them until they finally spilled. As expected, the creditors folded and showed Aston the text messages from Tamara and videos they'd taken of Belinda. The blood flowing from Belinda's body was absolutely horrifying. Aston broke down and dragged Tamara back to the chapel, where she'd previously seduced him and slept with him. Then, he watched coldly by the side as the creditors were forced to beat her up just as they had beaten up Belinda. They hit her until the entire floor of the chapel was soaked in blood. He was so deranged that it just sent chills down everyone's spines.Under massive fear and pressure, Tamara finally cracked and told him the full truth of everything that had happened seven years ago.Belinda had never seduced Alvin. Everything had just been part of Muriel's devious plans.Th

Belinda's POVThe helicopter landed at a prestigious hospital located in the suburbs in the shortest time possible.I was in so much pain that I couldn't even open my eyes anymore. However, I felt a big, warm hand holding on to mine tightly."Dad…" I mumbled."I've arranged for your parents to be hospitalized as well," a foreign man's voice told me.…When I finally opened my eyes again after the surgery, I caught sight of a man whom I never thought I'd ever see again, even in my wildest dreams. It was Alvin Powell."Surprised?"The corner of his lips lifted, just like how it did in the past. It was just that he looked a lot more grounded and composed now."I-I didn't think that you faked your death," I replied. And in such a horrifying way too.Alvin chuckled coldly and said, "If I didn't 'die' thoroughly, I'm afraid that the old lady would never have let her guard down, and then, my men would never have been able to take her out."He suddenly added awkwardly, "I never lik

Third-Person POVAston sat on the float with Hailey and Tamara. He looked at Hailey's radiant smile and suddenly thought of himself back when he'd been a child. He'd lived with his mother, Lindsay Barrera, in Barclena since he could remember. Lindsay was mentally unstable and rarely had any moments of normalcy. However, she would be lucid for half a day on his birthday every year, showing him rare tenderness and hugging him while calling him her most precious gift from the heavens. However, Aston knew that she would still relapse into a madwoman after this brief moment of tenderness. She also had manic episodes every now and then. She would torture herself and also make her family weep for her. Fortunately for her, Aston was her only family.Soon after, on his 17th birthday, he'd rushed home eagerly with a bunch of freshly-picked sunflowers in hand, only to find out that Lindsay was dead.A sprightly old woman stood before Lindsay's body. Her face was filled with sorrow. It was

No!I opened my mouth, but I couldn't make another sound anymore. Our family creditors immediately swarmed toward Mom and Dad, pulling out their loan agreements and forcing them to repay their debts.I had never seen my parents this disheveled.Mom, who'd lived a life of luxury all her life, had the last of her jewelry ripped right off her by the impatient creditors."You guys are literally worthless. We'll just take everything we can from you!"They weren't satisfied with the jewelry and even began tearing at Mom's clothes. Dad's eyes turned bloodshot as he tried to stop them, shielding Mom behind him."Mom!"I couldn't care less as I cut through the crowd and shielded Mom behind me as well. The creditors didn't dare to lay a finger on me since I was still Aston's wife. So, they turned to look at Aston instead."See, Mr. Powell, we're just trying to get our money back. It's our hard-earned money too…"Aston looked exhausted. He said, "I don't give a shit about the Crawfords'

Meeting my stunned gaze, Alvin slowly said, "Grandma once told Aston that he was never to return to the country, ever. But he broke the rule and disobeyed Grandma's order for the first time, all just for you."You're both like star-crossed lovers at this point, but I don't find it the least bit touching at all."What Alvin said next plunged me into an icy abyss. He took the tablet from Tamara and casually told me that he wasn't as empathetic as Muriel, who still harbored a very slight affection for Aston. He told me that the horrific car accident that was about to happen to Aston on the highway would take his life and make him completely disappear from the world."But you know, when I think about how horribly you're going to be crying after his death, I feel a little bit sorry for you," Alvin said, laughing in my ear."Should I tell the driver to hit the brakes a little earlier to spare his life? But if I do that, you must come back with me afterward. Aston only deserves the scrap

Aston's words struck me like a thunderbolt, roaring and ringing in my ears.I could see Mom and Dad turning increasingly pale while our creditors exchanged glances with each other before pulling out their loan agreements. The total amount of those agreements was more than enough to financially ruin our family forever.I stammered, "P-Please, don't do this."Tamara tugged on Aston's shirt hem and said, "She's still Hailey's mom after all. You shouldn't push things too far.""No. This is the perfect time to teach Hailey that even adults need to be punished too when they do something wrong," Aston said with a nod of his head while kicking at the food container on the floor."Belinda, you ruined the food that Tamara brought for Hailey. So, unless you lick every drop of food off the floor, I will not reconsider my decision."The grievance, hatred, humiliation, and shock all crashed onto me like a tidal wave at once."Why?" I demanded, unable to hold back. "Why must you do this to me!
