Chapter 3

Author: Ripple Fish
The crowd immediately broke into a heated discussion.

"Ms. Gunner has been leading the Alphalink Project for years, but progress has been rather slow. Could it really be…"

"People's true intentions are hard to read. Who knows what is really going on behind the scenes?"

"If the shares end up with Avery, Mr. Faraday must have been deceived."

Their remarks dripped with sarcasm, fueled by the satisfaction of exploiting my misfortune and a blatant distortion of the truth.

It seemed they had all forgotten that this laboratory had been built from the ground up.

Every piece of equipment and every research decision had been shaped by my unwavering effort over countless days and nights.

Draco said in a self-righteous tone, "Erica, are you really prepared to let everyone else's efforts go to waste because of your own selfish motives?"

Avery looked toward the wall filled with certificates and awards and sighed. "Draco, I think these hollow honors have blinded Erica. How can she confront reality while holding onto past achievements?

"Why don't we burn these certificates? It will not only help Erica, but also remind us not to remain stuck in the past."

How could she say that? Those trophies and certificates were the result of my journey and the entire team's effort!

Draco nodded immediately. "Avery is right. Since she refuses to face reality, we will help her confront it."

He then instructed the guards, "Get rid of these eyesores. Burn them."

"Stop!" I shouted sharply as I stepped forward to block them.

Avery moved closer and pulled me aside. "Erica, if you keep this up, how is Draco supposed to manage the company going forward?"

The guards immediately began tearing the certificates down from the wall.

Anger surged through me. I grabbed a wooden stick and swung it toward Avery.

"Erica, how dare you!" Draco shouted from behind me.

His expression turned vicious as he seized a fire extinguisher from the corner and slammed it hard into my back.

I let out a sharp gasp of pain. My vision blurred, and I dropped to my knees.

Before I could recover, Draco's face darkened further as he snapped at the guards, "Douse her. Let her see who's really in charge."

It was a plastic drum used in the lab for storing toxic chemical waste.

Although the guards hesitated, they still lifted the container and poured its contents toward me without delay. A sharp, pungent odor filled the air instantly. I forced myself to endure the pain and staggered aside in a desperate attempt to avoid it.

The liquid hit the ground and immediately began to hiss with a sharp sizzle.

The onlookers' faces went pale as they quickly backed away in panic.

If it had struck me directly, the outcome would have been unthinkable.

As Draco looked at my disheveled appearance, he warned coldly, "Erica, if you dare cause any more trouble, I will have you thrown out of this lab immediately."

I stared at him in disbelief. "Draco, how can you treat me like this for a woman who once betrayed you and left without a word?"

He gave a mocking laugh. "Erica, if you hadn't interfered back then, I would have been with Avery a long time ago. Avery never betrayed me. She left because she had no choice, all for the sake of helping me accomplish something greater."

My lips trembled, but I said nothing.

At that moment, Linda Hartwell, a senior staff member, suddenly stepped forward. She pointed at Draco and said angrily, "Draco, do you have any conscience at all? Have you forgotten how Erica helped you build this lab from the ground up?"

Draco's expression turned dark instantly. He could not stand being reminded of how dependent he had once been on me.

He turned sharply toward her and snapped, "Who gave you the right to speak here? If you don't want to work, then get out!"

The key data Avery used to support her claims closely matched a set of early-stage reference data from an overseas research team that had never been made public. The only differences appeared in minor details, where signs of deliberate alteration made her results seem more "perfect".I began gathering evidence without drawing attention to myself. With Draco urging her on, Avery accelerated her unfinished drug project. Draco followed up with a high-profile press conference, announcing a milestone breakthrough and revealing that an application had already been submitted to international patent authorities.Avery was soon portrayed as a leading talent in the field and a driving force behind cutting-edge research. For a brief period, Faraday Pharmaceuticals gained significant attention. However, within three hours of the press conference, a scandal erupted, sending shockwaves through the global academic community. The situation began when the head of a leading overseas laboratory pu

On the third day after the topic began trending, Rutherford Pharmaceuticals' official platform released a public announcement."Rutherford Pharmaceuticals warmly welcomes internationally renowned biologist and original creator of the Alphalink Project, Dr. Erica Gunner, along with her core research team. "Dr. Gunner will serve as the Director of the Group's Advanced Biotech Laboratory and Chief Scientist, taking full charge of the continued development and commercialization of the Alphalink Project."The announcement also attached my personal résumé, which clearly detailed my leading publications and awards. It immediately triggered a huge wave of reactions across the internet."What the hell, is this a reversal?""Rutherford Pharmaceuticals? That well-known, established pharma company? They're taking Erica in now? Could all those allegations have been false?""I knew it. Dr. Gunner never gave off that impression.""Hold on, original creator of the Alphalink Project? Didn't Far

My parents nodded and didn't press for any further explanation.I had assumed that after the confrontation over the phone earlier that day, Draco and Avery would at least keep a low profile for a while. However, I had never expected that night to bring a so-called "exclusive exposé" that instantly set the internet ablaze. At first, it circulated only within a small circle of gossip accounts."Breaking news! Former head of a top domestic biotech lab exposed as an academic fraud.""A deeper investigation into the so-called 'genius female scientist' Erica Gunner suggested that her academic credentials were forged and that she rose to power through improper means.""Exclusive report claiming Erica bullied newcomers, stole credit for projects, and drove out the true core members of her original lab."The posts were detailed and thorough. They questioned my doctoral degree obtained overseas and accused me of dominating the company, taking credit for team achievements, suppressing junio

Draco went quiet on the other end, clearly caught off guard by my refusal. After a short pause, he snapped, "Erica! What kind of attitude is this? Don't forget, you're still my fiancee! This is a matter of life and death. How can you stand by and do nothing?""Fiancee?" I responded with a hint of mockery. "Draco, when you forced me to hand over the core results and stood by while Avery broke Linda's arm, you didn't remember that. Now that something has gone wrong, you suddenly bring up my obligations? That's ridiculous.""You…" Draco was momentarily speechless. After a long silence, he gritted his teeth and said, "Erica, I never realized you were this cold-hearted. You simply can't accept Avery doing better than you, so you deliberately left flaws behind to sabotage her, didn't you?"I couldn't be bothered to argue further. I said coldly, "I have no obligation, nor the ability, to handle this situation. Mr. Faraday, you should deal with it yourself."Draco went silent. On the li

Hearing this, Linda pointed at Draco and snapped, "Draco! You heartless, ungrateful man! You're just like your father. You climb to the top by relying on women, and once you get what you want, you abandon them without hesitation! "Do you really think you are anything special now? Without Erica, what are you even? You…""Shut up!" Draco snapped. His face turned ashen in an instant, and the veins on his forehead bulged visibly. He kicked Linda hard, sending her flying. She crashed heavily onto the floor with a dull thud. Linda had been with Draco's parents for years. How could he do that?Just as I was about to rush over and help her up, Avery suddenly screamed, "She has acid in her hand!"She grabbed a nearby fire extinguisher and smashed it viciously against Linda's arm. With a sharp crack, Linda's agonized scream pierced everyone's ears. When I saw her arm bleed heavily, my mind went blank, and fury was all that remained.I grabbed the trophy beside the trash can and charg
