Chapter 2

Author: Perfect Timing
I wasn't sure if it was because the third floor wasn't high enough, but I didn't feel much pain when I landed on the ground.

Meanwhile, horrified shrieks erupted around me.

"Are you okay, Finn?"

The voice sounded like Mom's.

I opened my eyes and was about to tell her that my name wasn't Finn when I realized that I was lying on someone.

It was Finn, my brother who had just said that he wouldn't acknowledge me as his sister just moments ago.

I felt a little awkward. I hadn't expected to land on him. I hastily got off him, but I lost my balance and accidentally fell on him again.

The color drained from Finn's face. He looked like he was seconds away from vomiting blood.

I trembled in fear as I took in his pained expression. His eyes were burning with fury.

However, after briefly mulling over my thoughts, I realized that the Emersons couldn't do anything to me. At most, they could threaten to kill me, but I was already tired of living anyway.

Mom looked at Finn with an anguished expression. She then turned to glare at me, snapping, "How dare you cause so much trouble? It's only your first day here!"

I pursed my lips, feeling a little disgruntled because Quinn was the one who threatened to jump from the balcony in the first place.

Why didn't Mom scold Quinn for pretending to jump from the balcony? Why did she berate me and call me troublesome when I genuinely wanted to die?

As expected, everyone played favorites. No one in the world truly loved me.

Tears spilled down my face.

Mom was just about to scold me for being dramatic when Winnie's warning about misfortune befalling the people around me whenever I tried to take my own life suddenly flashed through her mind.

She shook her head, convincing herself that Winnie was just spouting nonsense.

As the head of the family, Dad also convinced himself that it was just a coincidence that Finn got hurt.

"Being a crybaby is unbefitting of a daughter of the Emerson family, Charlotte Griffin," he said. "Forget it. We'll deal with you later. We need to rush Finn to the hospital for now."

Mom and Dad brought Finn and Quinn, who stumbled down the stairs, to the hospital.

Quinn had gotten a scrape on her foot when I shoved her aside earlier.

None of them cared that I had just jumped from the third floor.

Winnie was the only one who showed me any concern. She grabbed the first-aid kit and tended to my swollen and bruised ankle.

"Don't take their words to heart, Ms. Griffin. Mr. and Mrs. Emerson just haven't gotten used to the fact that you'll be around from now on. I'm certain that they actually do love you!"

I just continued to sit there in a daze, swaying my feet back and forth until Mom and Dad returned.

They only recalled that they hadn't decided on which room I was going to move into yet when they saw me sitting on the couch.

Dad looked exhausted as he massaged his brow. He pointed at the guest room in the corner and said, "Finn suffered multiple broken bones because of you. He needs to be monitored, so he'll be hospitalized for now. We haven't prepared a room for you yet, so you can stay there for now."

I scratched my head, not knowing how to answer Quinn. I couldn't possibly tell her that the Emersons were only treating me well because they feared death. The guests began whispering among themselves."Are the Emersons going to disown Quinn?""If you take a good look at them, you can tell that Quinn doesn't look like any of the Emersons.""She got what she deserved. Quinn was always using her status as the heiress of the Emerson family to bully people in school. I'm glad that it's coming back to bite her now!""She's so shameless even though she's just a fake heiress. It's one thing for her to freeload in somebody else's home. I can't believe she was actually planning to frame the real daughter!"Quinn wasn't brave enough to face the guests' looks of disdain. She let out an anguished wail before she ran off. She waited for a long time, but no one chased after her to comfort her like before. Her heart was suddenly gripped by fear. She was terrified that the Emersons would kick he

The color drained from Quinn's face. She tried to explain herself, but Dad shoved the surveillance footage in her face, looking utterly disappointed."Stop being so stubborn! We've already seen the evidence! We raised you for 18 years, Quinn, and we never once mistreated you. We even refrained from revealing Charlotte's identity to the public because we didn't want to hurt your feelings."You're just our adopted daughter. What message are you trying to send by targeting Charlotte over and over again?"Quinn never expected Dad to humiliate her in front of so many people. Her face was twisted in despair.Meanwhile, Mom slowly led me away from the swimming pool and began introducing me to the guests."This is my daughter, Charlotte Emerson. She and Quinn were accidentally switched at birth. We only brought Charlotte back home not too long ago."Charlotte's shy and introverted, but she's also very thoughtful. We hope that no one will bully her. Anyone who looks down on her will be ma

No matter how reluctant Quinn was, she had no choice but to move into another villa that belonged to the Emerson family since even Grandma was no longer on her side.Meanwhile, Grandma joined Mom, Dad, and Finn in doting on me.At first, I wasn't used to Grandma's attention, especially since she had acted so arrogantly during our first meeting. She constantly showered me with presents and always referred to me as "my darling Charlotte".It was as if she were a completely different person compared to the one who had scolded me that day.…I didn't feel as depressed as I used to when I looked at the dizzying number of zeros in my bank account and my closets that were stuffed to the brim with clothes.Occasionally, I would update my social media in the middle of the night, so Quinn could see what I was up to."I don't need a lot of money. What I need is a lot of love."I attached a photo of my new sports car and the family heirloom bracelet that Grandma had given me with the messa

The voice belonged to the most senior member of the Emerson family, Matilda Bolton, who was also Finn's, Quinn's, and my grandmother.I had heard from Winnie that Grandma was the one who spoiled Quinn the most in the family.I crossed my arms and scrutinized her while she did the same to me."She has no class at all. I can't believe that you're kicking Quinn out because of her," Grandma said.Quinn's confidence returned to her now that her new pillar of support had appeared. "Don't say that, Grandma. Charlotte will get upset," she said.Grandma held her hand, looking incredibly upset."You're too mature, Quinn. Why are you still considering her feelings when she convinced your parents to kick you out of the house?"Mom and Dad looked at me warily. When they noticed that I had lowered my head and looked like I was in low spirits, they hastily pulled Grandma aside."Don't complicate things, Mom!" they whispered. "You don't know this, but Charlotte has this unique thing about her.

"My stomach hurts so much!""I'm feeling dizzy too… Why are you foaming at the mouth, Dad?""Don't just stand there! Call an ambulance!"Mom, Dad, and Finn spent the rest of the night in agony as the doctors flushed out their stomachs and hooked them up to IVs.In the end, they found out that although the mushrooms had been poisonous, their toxins were neutralized because we were also served a dish of mountain herbs that hadn't been cooked properly. As a result, I was completely fine while they suffered from food poisoning because of the herbs.…Mom, Dad, and Finn treated me even better after they were discharged from the hospital again.Of course, they didn't let the issue of the poisonous mushrooms slide. In the end, they discovered that Quinn was the one who was responsible."Why did you do such a thing, Quinn?" Mom asked. She looked utterly disappointed. She never could have imagined that the well-behaved daughter, whom she had raised for more than a decade, was capable

The Maserati Quattroporte flipped right over the barricade and began tumbling down the hill.I inhaled sharply, wondering if Mom's and Dad's brains were reminiscent of the inside of a blender at that moment.I hastily ran over to their car to check if they were still alive.Fear was written all over their faces as they stared at me."Y-You're really an unlucky star!"Truth be told, I felt a little upset that they were calling me an unlucky star right to my face. However, I couldn't deny the fact that misfortune seemed to haunt me wherever I went ever since I was a child. When I was still living with Ray and Holly, I never succeeded in taking my own life even though I jumped into the river 11 times, drugged myself four times, hung myself three times, and jumped from the roof seven times.I wondered if God refused to let me die because my life was just too terrible.Meanwhile, misfortune would befall Ray and Holly whenever I thought about cutting my life short. It seemed that th
