**EMERSON**

I have no idea how much time has passed since River left. Ten minutes. Twenty. Maybe longer.

I don't know.

I haven't moved.

I'm still standing exactly where he'd left me, like some part of my body hasn't gotten the message that he's gone.

“Come on, Emerson,” I mutter, forcing myself to move. “Seriously? Get a fucking grip.”

I push away from the wall, glaring at myself like I'm personally offended by my own hesitation.

“He’s gone. You’re fine. So wipe that pathetic look off your face

**EMERSON**Two hours. That’s how long it takes before my arms finally stop pretending they’re capable of functioning. The Porsche is almost clean. Almost. A faint shadow of red still ghosts the edge of the hood if you look at it from the wrong angle, and there’s a stubborn smudge near the wheel well that laughs at every pass of the sponge. The rest of it—the X, the signature, the line across the black finish that felt so satisfying in the dark—is gone. Reduced to wet concrete, solvent smell, and a deep ache spreading through my shoulders.I drop the sponge into the bucket and straighten too quickly.Bad idea.My back protests immediately.“Fuck.”My wrists burn. My fingers ache. My entire body feels like it has aged approximately forty years since sunrise. And my sweatshirt is soaked. Completely fucking soaked. The fabric has gone cold against my skin, clinging stubbornly to my stomach and chest. I’ve spent the last hour pretending not to notice.River, unfortunately, has made pret

**RIVER**I should be looking at the fucking car. That’s the whole point of this. The paint. The signature. The fact that she walked into a parking lot with a couple of cheap cans and decided the Trinity’s name was something she could rewrite in hardware-store acrylic like we were a joke she could tag and walk away from.I brought her here to watch her remove it. To make the lesson physical. Personal. To stand over her while she scrubbed away every trace of that stunt and understood, piece by piece, that she doesn’t get to challenge me without paying for it.So why the hell am I not looking at the fucking car?Why am I watching her?She drags the sponge across the hood, stubborn and methodical, mouth pressed into that same irritated line she wears whenever she’s trying not to say something that’ll get her into more trouble.Every time she reaches toward the top of the windshield, the hem of her sweatshirt rides up, exposing a narrow strip of skin above her waistband. She tugs it down

**EMERSON**For such an asshole, why does he have to be so fucking sexy?I force my feet to move before the thought can dig in any deeper. The staff member has already melted back toward the house, leaving me alone at the edge of the court like I've been delivered for inspection. The outdoor lights throw River into sharp relief - shoulders, chest, the hard line of his stomach shifting every time he pivots. Sweat tracks down his skin. The ball hits the concrete in a steady, arrogant rhythm.Thump. Thump. Thump. He knows I'm here.Of course he does. Men like him always know when they have an audience. He takes one more shot, the ball sliding cleanly through the net, and only then does he turn. His gaze finds me instantly. That slow, satisfied look settles over his face - the one that says he expected me to show, expected me to hate it, and is enjoying both."Wildcat."My name - his version of it - carries across the court like he owns the morning."Don't call me that."He catches the

EMERSONThe alarm goes off at four in the morning.Four fucking a.m.I slap blindly at my phone, miss it twice, and nearly send the device flying into the wall before finally silencing the shrill noise. For three blissful seconds, I lie there in the darkness. Then my sleep-fogged brain catches up.River.The Porsche. The photograph. The threat. And, most importantly, the deeply unfortunate decision I made to vandalize the car of a rich, vindictive psychopath who apparently considered breaking into my house a reasonable response to property damage.I groan and drag the blanket over my head.“Brilliant, Emerson,” I mutter into the pillow. “Absolutely fucking brilliant.”I had wanted to prove a point.I had wanted to wipe that smug expression off River Knight’s face.I had wanted him to understand that his money, his family name, and his army of terrified admirers didn’t make him untouchable.Instead, I had given him an excuse to blackmail me, a photograph that could destroy my reputatio

RIVERI reach the car and drop into the passenger seat.“Jesus Christ,” Knox mutters, adjusting his seat belt. “We thought you were gonna get caught when her dad came home.”“Relax. I’m not a fucking amateur. I’ve had plenty of practice sneaking in and out of girls’ windows,” I say, not even bothering to hide the smirk. “Never been caught. Not once.”Knox lets out a low laugh. “Yeah, no shit you haven’t. You’re a fucking menace.”I snort.“Menace is putting it lightly. I've got a whole fucking résumé.”He looks through the windshield for a moment before adding, “Her dad did look kind of familiar from the back, though.”I frown, replaying the brief glimpse in my head.“Yeah. He did.”“Couldn’t put my finger on it.” He pauses, squinting toward the road like the answer might suddenly appear in the darkness. “Or maybe he’s just one of those guys who has a familiar-looking back.”I slowly turn my head and stare at him.“A familiar-looking back?”“You know what I mean.”“No,” I say fla

**EMERSON**River’s grip on my wrist slackens just enough for me to yank my arm free. His dark eyes flick toward the open bedroom door, tracking the faint, distant echo of heavy boots wiping against the welcome mat in the foyer below. When he looks back at me, that infuriating, crooked smirk is already sliding back into place.“Daddy's home,” he whispers.“Get the fuck out of my house,” I hiss, voice low and shaking with residual rage. “If my dad finds you in here—”“Relax, Wildcat.” He gets up smoothly, already moving toward the window like he has all the time in the world. “I’m leaving. For now.”“For now?” I step after him, still clutching the towel. “If you ever climb through my window again, I swear to God I’ll make you regret it.”River’s smirk only deepen, unbothered that my dad is downstairs.“Careful, Wildcat,” he murmurs. “Threats like that just make me want to come back.”“Fuck off,” I hiss under my breath, as I clutch the damp towel tighter against my collarbone. He rest
