Chapter 6

Author: Will of Me
It felt as though I were drifting in a dream, waking in my bed, back in the world I once knew.

My parents, friends, and my pet dog huddled around my bed.

Mom and Dad looked heartbroken.

“You’ve been through so much.”

My pet dog licked my face and barked perkily.

With my muscles relaxing, I reached out to embrace them.

That was when a sharp pain shot through me.

I opened my eyes to find Sylas roughly wiping the tears off my face.

For once, he didn’t take jabs at me even when I was

The four men gasped sharply. In a bid to cover up, Tara summoned the servants to put a cloak on me, but Sylas grabbed her by the arm. “What’s going on, Tara? Why is she covered in these bruises?” Cameron dropped to the floor and examined my injuries. “Why are there so many fresh scars beyond the old ones? Was someone beating her?” Lucian shed tears. “Lyra was too proud and resilient to put herself beneath us. What did you do to her?” Tara couldn’t find the words. Leon ordered a search of the estate. A dozen unclothed men and torture gear were quickly uncovered. Cowering under the King’s wrath, these brutes let the cat out of the bag right away. “It was Lady Tara. She put us up for it.“She had us pretend to be bandits four years ago to set Lyra up for kidnapping. The convent was built for this purpose.” It struck the four male leads that I hadn’t been lying all along. It was all Tara’s doing. With bloodshot eyes, Sylas drew his sword and pointed it at Tara’s n

  • Hardly Game Over   Chapter 7

At the end of a full day of torture, I had nothing left in me to even utter a word. Tara forced Cameron’s miracle pill down my throat but dumped the vial for killing the pain to the ground. Before I could voice my curiosity about Tara’s intent to torment me, she broke out in laughter. “I’m sure this is eating you up inside.“Why did you have to come back? I am the daughter raised by House Thornfield. What right do you have to take what belongs to me?“Sylas, Cameron, and Lucian are mine. Even the place next to Leon belongs to me.“Don’t blame me for what I’ll do next for stealing my property.” As my blood ran cold, Tara added. “I know you’re a player on a quest while I’m just a naïve heroine who’s awakened to the story. “Why do I have to give up one of my male leads just so you can complete your mission?“They are all exceptional, and I won’t hand a single one to you!” Tara summoned yesterday’s burly men back into the room. “She ought to know the rules. Break her un

For once, he didn’t take jabs at me even when I was awake. “You were calling for Mother and Father in your dreams. Do you miss them? “For their sake, you should stop seeking your own end. You still have me. If you die, I’d have no family of our blood left.” Reality nearly broke me. The System had given me seven days to complete the act. Yet, these people were in my way on every turn. I flinched away from Sylas’ touch, even at the risk of aggravating my wounds. However, my severe injuries kept me from moving. I ran my mouth instead.

Everyone scowled at my words. Tyle furrowed her brows, fearing that I held proof. Nevertheless, the four targets were skeptical. Sylas spoke, his voice heavy with condemnation. “I watched Tara grow up to be a woman of integrity and poise. I doubt she’d lie. “You were raised in the gutters. God knows what else you picked up on the streets.” Sure enough, prejudice was a mountain too heavy to move. No one would suspect an adopted daughter, born into privilege, of underhanded means. Meanwhile, the real flesh and blood was already condemned to be wicked and petty for surviving the streets. In that case, I had nothing more to say. “You’re right. I’m vile, and she’s not. Why do you even bother with me? Just let me die.” The men grimaced hard. Out of the blue, Cameron gripped my hand. “Come away with me, Lyra. We can leave the capital and travel across the land. We can live freely through our trade. Isn’t that the life you’ve always wanted?” I smirked at him. “Are

I designed the dagger for Leon, drafting the blueprint and forging the materials myself. The blade was tempered with special steel, honed to an unsettling sharpness. It cut right into my flesh with ease. Blood spilled. My face beamed with a smile. It was great that everything would be over soon. I wouldn’t have to feel pain anymore. Amid the confusion, I could feel a pair of warm hands steadily pressing down on my injury. “Don’t be scared, Lyra. “I’m here, and I won’t let you slip away.”I fought to open my eyes and saw a familiar silhouette. “Cameron Webb?”As the name slipped past my lips, the gates of my memory snapped open. House Webb prided itself on its long line of healers, and Cameron was the current head. For generations, while House Thornfield bled on the battlefield, House Webb was there to stitch them back together. By the elders’ pact, the daughter of House Thornfield was to be betrothed to the lord of House Webb. The engagement fell to Tara, but I

“Are you trying to get yourself killed, Lyra? “The arrows of our House are dipped in venom. You know that!” Of course, I did. The poison arrows were Tara’s idea. According to her, our soldiers could inflict better damage on enemies. even when they missed their marks. I voiced my objections, concerned that the plan could backfire on our men. Sylas retorted in annoyance, “Our men are trained, not fools who would hurt themselves. Lyra, you don’t have the grit of this House, unlike Tara.” Now, this poison arrow could very well facilitate my departure from this world. Tossing the bone bow aside, Sylas sprinted toward me and tore the fabric from my shoulder. He pressed his lips against my wound, drawing out the venom. It took three long pulls for my blood to be cleared of poison. By then, Sylas’ complexion was pale. He screamed for the antidote and forced the liquid down my throat. Following my refusal to swallow, Sylas smacked me hard in exasperation. “How much longer
