Hardship Taught Me Well

Gavin and I grew up in the same orphanage. He was proud and soft-spoken, constantly targeted by bullies, so for thirteen long years I stood up for him.At eighteen, we quietly fell in love.I gave him a pair of clay figurines I sculpted by hand, and we made a vow to stay together as long as the figurines remained intact. At twenty-three, we decided to get married and buy a place to call our own.To realize our shared dream, I went overseas to work for five years, wiring every single cent I earned back to him. Finally, six months ago, Gavin told me he had saved enough money to buy the house we had been eyeing. The day I saw the deed, I was picking cherries on a farm half a world away.I was working nine and a half hours a day, my skin peeling off my sunburnt face, yet my heart brimmed with sweetness.Once the harvest season ended, I couldn’t wait another second. I bought a plane ticket and flew home to surprise him.I never expected to be at the other end of the surprise. The woman, Chl

“You toiled abroad for five years, and every single penny you earned was spent by Hayes on his own little home with his new wife.”The PI pulled out a thick ledger, reading through it page by page.“March 2022. You transferred four thousand five hundred to Hayes, with the note: ‘Funds for future home.’“Ten minutes after the transfer cleared, he deposited the money into Lynch’s account, telling her it was a bonus from a new project.“July 2023. You transferred six thousand nine hundred to Hayes, with the note: ‘I’ve been sick, so I didn’t earn as much.’“He sent you a message telling you to remember to take your medicine, then used the money to book a seven-day resort stay.“February 14, 2024. Valentine’s Day. You transferred eleven thousand four hundred dollars, telling him you missed home.“Hayes comforted you, saying it wouldn’t be long now—just a little more to go before the goal was reached—and urged you to work hard.“That same year, he bought a car for forty thousand dollars, fu

My voice was quiet.Yet in that instant, all eyes in the hall fell upon me.The smile on Gavin’s face froze solid. His grip around his child visibly tightened, as if he had just seen a ghost.Chloe stood rooted to the spot. The microphone in her hand emitted a sharp screech of static, piercing enough to make one’s eardrums ache.“Clara... Is that you?”Gavin uttered my name almost instinctively. The very next second, as if finally snapping back to reality, his face turned deathly pale.“What are you doing here?“When did you get back?”I stared at him.Five years apart, and he had changed so much. His suit fit him perfectly, his hair was meticulously styled, and his features now carried the composure of a seasoned man.And yet, I could tell at a glance that he was terrified.Terrified I would speak.Afraid I would shatter the life he had so painstakingly painted over.I forced a faint smile, though my eyes stung terribly.“Didn’t your wife tell you?”Gavin whipped his head around to gl

“One time in my third year there, I ran a fever of a hundred and four degrees. With no cars available in the middle of the night to take me to the hospital, I wrapped myself in a blanket and suffered through the night alone.“The fourth year, on Valentine’s Day, missing home terribly, I wired him three thousand eight hundred dollars.“He told me it wouldn’t be long now—just a little more to go before we could finally have our home.”I turned my eyes toward Gavin.“And did you speak the truth?“Three days after I flew out to Silveridge, you and Chloe got married.”Gasps echoed across the crowd. The banquet hall erupted into an instant uproar.“Three days?”“What a jackass.”“So he scammed his ex into toiling away while getting married behind her back?”“I can’t believe this.”I didn’t stop.“March 2022, I sent him four thousand five hundred dollars, noting it as funds for our future home.“Ten minutes later, he deposited the money into Chloe’s account, claiming it was a bonus from a pro

She looked up at me.“We can win.”Her reply made all my past torments worth it.I didn’t see Gavin over the next few days.He called me countless times.I didn’t answer a single call. Then he sent me messages:“Clara, let’s talk.“Things aren’t the way you think they are.“I know I’ve wronged you, but I had no choice at the time.“Can you please take down the videos?“My boss already brought me in for a talk, and Chloe’s dad has been dragged into this too.”Reading all those words, I felt nothing but sheer absurdity.Even now, he was still convinced I should clean up his mess for him.Just like all those years in the past.Back in the orphanage, when other kids stole his food, I fought them off. When he failed his exams, I stayed up all night to tutor him. When he met setbacks at work, I comforted him, telling him we could take things slow. When he wanted to buy a house, I went to work in Silveridge.I had always borne the burden. That must be why he assumed even now—after his colossa
