"A Caged Snake Still Bites"

Elane’s POV

The worst part of prison isn’t the bars.

It isn’t the cold.

Or the endless clatter of metal trays, or the stench of bleach trying to hide blood and piss.

It’s the silence.

The kind that seeps through cement walls after the lights go out—when the coughing fades, the moaning stops, and you’re left with nothing but the sound of your own thoughts chewing through you like rats in a basement.

They thought they buried me in this place.

They didn’t bury me.

They planted me.

I sit on the edge of the cot—hands clasped loosely in my lap, back straight. My bunkmate snores, twitching in her sleep like a dog dreaming of its past life. A flickering bulb above us sputters, drowning the cell in pulses of half-light and shadow.

I haven’t spoken in four days.

Not since I overheard the guard call me The Lady Snake.

I liked that.

Let them whisper. Let them speculate about the quiet woman in C Block who doesn’t cry, doesn’t scream, doesn’t break. Let them believe I’

LUNA’S POVThe balcony door creaked behind me, and the cool night air rushed against my skin. I just wanted to breathe—just a moment away from the noise, the smoke, the sweaty bodies pressed too close inside. But of course, he was there.Leaning against the railing, a smirk tugging at the corner of his lips, shirt half undone like he thought he was God’s gift to earth. Tattoos curved over his arms, ink and muscle flexing with every lazy movement. Jaden.“Are you following me now, princess?” His voice dripped with arrogance, like he was already bored.I rolled my eyes, crossing my arms to shield myself from his smug stare. “Please. Don’t flatter yourself. The world doesn’t revolve around you.”He chuckled, slow and mocking, dragging on the cigarette between his fingers. “Could’ve fooled me. The way you’re staring at me right now…”I blinked, heat crawling to my cheeks before I could stop it. Damn it—he noticed. It wasn’t my fault his stupid tattoos looked like something out of a magazi

Luna’s POVDinner was supposed to be warm, cheerful… a family reunion after years away. But instead, it was suffocating. The dining room glowed under the soft chandelier lights, silver spoons clinking against porcelain plates. Mom had set everything perfectly, but it still felt heavy—like even the food carried rules I couldn’t escape.I swallowed hard and finally said it.“Dad, there’s something I want to ask.”His eyes rose from his glass of wine, sharp and unreadable. “What is it, Luna?”I forced myself to hold his gaze. “A friend invited me to a party tomorrow. Just a small birthday thing. Her name’s Lucy. She’s nice, and I… I’d like to go.”The silence that followed was louder than any shout.Dad set his glass down slowly. “No.”The word cut through me like a blade.“Dad, you didn’t even think about it—”“I don’t need to think about it,” he snapped. “You’re too young. You don’t know these people. You’re not going.”I turned to Mom, desperate. Her soft eyes met mine, and for a seco

Luna's povThe car windows were tinted dark, but I could still see him. That boy. His hair blowing to the wind, his muscles flexing as he stretched his arms, slightly showing his tattooed arms. The arrogant stranger from the jewelry store. He leaned lazily against a pillar across the parking lot, his blue eyes catching mine in a way that felt like a forbidden pull. My stomach twisted—half from anger, half from something I refused to name. Before I could take another look, Dad stepped in front of me, blocking my view completely. His face was carved with fury. This was going to be interesting.“What did I just tell you inside, Luna?” His voice was sharp, low, carrying the kind of authority that made my heart sink. “Stay away from boys. Especially ones like him.”I swallowed hard, lowering my eyes to my lap. “I wasn’t doing anything, Dad.” My voice cracked, and I hated how weak it sounded.“Nothing?” His jaw tightened, his hands curling into fists at his sides. For a moment, he looked li

Years laterLuna's pov (Laura's daughter)I woke up feeling amazing, the sun rays touching my skin on every move I made. I ran to Jimmy's dorm and found him lying face down on his bed.“Wake up, we have to go and meet mom and dad, don't forget that high school is over!” I squealed. He groaned and threw a pillow at my face.“Eww this smells like boy sweat,” I crunched my nose. “Get up!” I grabbed his sheets and he curled in a fetal position, shivering to the cold breeze. His roommate, Mike. Walking shirtless, I couldn't help but drool over him for a second. He was hot. He made college amazing for me, well I never really spoke to him but we spoke in spirit.“Hi Luna, here to pick up your lazy brother?” He smirked and grabbed his towel. “Like what you see?” “Ew no, I don't.” I turned to the window and heard Jimmy get off from the bed. After what felt like eternity, Larry–mom and dad's driver came to pick us up.I wore a simple black jean and pink hoodie, Jimmy just wore whatever he c

"A Sky Full of Promises"Laura’s POVDays had passed since Elane’s death and Astrid’s arrest, and while the world still carried the weight of what we’d endured, the storm inside me had finally begun to calm. For the first time in a long time, I felt... free.I stood by the window of Elijah’s penthouse, wrapped in a pale blue silk robe, watching the city come alive beneath me. The skyline stretched far and wide, brushed with golden sunlight and streaks of cotton clouds. A fresh breeze swept through the open glass doors, carrying the scent of lilacs and something sweet I couldn’t quite name.Peace.I wasn’t used to it.Behind me, I heard footsteps approach, slow and deliberate.Elijah’s arms wrapped around my waist from behind, his lips brushing the top of my shoulder. “You’re quiet,” he murmured.“I’m just… soaking it in,” I whispered. He rested his chin on my shoulder. “You deserve this peace. No more running. No more looking over your shoulder.”I turned in his arms to face him. “And

Laura's pov I don’t know what was louder—the sirens howling through the hospital or the thundering inside my chest. Luna was gone. I could still feel her scream vibrating in the air, like a ghost refusing to be silenced. Her name echoed in my mind, over and over, until it became a wail I couldn’t stop hearing. I clutched the blanket tighter around me, the trembling in my hands refusing to settle. “Please,” I whispered, “please let her be okay.” “Elijah!” I shouted as soon as I heard footsteps burst into the room. He looked wild—his shirt half-untucked, jaw clenched, eyes full of fear. “She took Luna,” he said, like the words were knives in his throat. “Elane took your sister.” My lungs seized. “No.” “I’ll get her back,” he swore, coming to my side, sinking to his knees. “I swear to you, Laura—I’m not letting her win. Not this time.” I stared at him. This man who once believed the worst of me. This man who now looked like he’d burn the world to put it right. “I told you not
