The Pierce Estate was magnificent, a sprawling architectural masterpiece that could have been pulled straight from the pages of a luxury magazine. But despite its grandeur, Sienna had never stepped foot in a place that felt so utterly lifeless.

She walked through the long, silent corridors, her footsteps muffled by thick Persian rugs. The chandeliers sparkled overhead, casting soft golden hues across the marbled floors, but the light did nothing to warm the atmosphere. Everything was pristine, carefully curated, and impersonal. It was a house meant to be admired, not lived in.

The absence of warmth wasn’t just in the decor—it was in the air, in the silence that clung to every corner like an unshakable shadow. There was no laughter, no background hum of life, no warmth that made a house a home. It was a museum of wealth, cold and uninviting.

Sienna exhaled softly. She had worked in wealthy households before, but this was different. There was something profoundly lonely about the Pierce estate, a loneliness that was echoed in the small, withdrawn figure of Lily Pierce.

She found the little girl exactly where she had left her the day before—perched by the grand window of her bedroom, staring out at the vast gardens with vacant eyes. She made no sound, no movement to acknowledge Sienna’s presence.

“Good morning, Lily,” Sienna greeted gently as she set her bag down. No response.

She knelt on the floor, maintaining a respectful distance. “You know,” she continued, “I saw a butterfly outside just now. A bright blue one. Have you ever seen one like that?”

Lily blinked slowly but didn’t turn her head.

Sienna let the silence settle between them. She had dealt with children who were slow to trust before, but this was something deeper. It wasn’t just shyness—it was isolation.

Her gaze drifted around the room. It was beautiful, just like the rest of the mansion—ornate furniture, expensive toys, and shelves lined with books. But it was all untouched, as if they were decorations rather than things meant to be used.

There were no crayon marks on the walls, no scattered dolls, no signs that a child actually **lived** here.

Sienna felt a pang in her chest. This wasn’t just a house without warmth—it was a **childhood without warmth**.

She turned back to Lily, her voice softer this time. “Would you like to go outside with me today?”

No response.

Sienna wasn’t discouraged. She knew trust wasn’t given freely—it had to be earned. And she was willing to be patient.

Behind her, she sensed movement at the door. When she glanced over her shoulder, she found Grayson Pierce standing there, watching them with his usual unreadable expression.

His presence was like a shift in the air—commanding, imposing.

“She doesn’t talk much,” he said, his voice low, matter-of-fact.

Sienna rose to her feet, meeting his gaze. “She doesn’t talk **at all**.”

Grayson’s jaw tightened. “She used to.”

The weight of his words lingered between them. Sienna studied his face, searching for cracks in the icy exterior, but he had already shut himself off, his features carved from stone.

Whatever had stolen Lily’s voice had left its mark on him too.

Sienna squared her shoulders. “Well, she’ll talk again. When she’s ready.”

Grayson’s eyes darkened. “Don’t make promises you can’t keep, Miss Carter.”

“I don’t.” She turned back to Lily, her voice full of quiet determination. “I meant what I said.”

Lily remained silent, but this time, Sienna swore she saw a flicker of something in her big, sorrowful eyes.

**Hope.**

Grayson exhaled sharply, breaking the heavy silence. “I assume Dawson has given you the rules of the house?”

Sienna nodded. “Yes. And they’re… interesting.”

His brow arched. “Interesting?”

“Well,” she said, tilting her head, “for one, I find it odd that there’s no time set aside for Lily to just be a kid.”

Grayson’s gaze darkened. “Structure is important.”

“So is freedom,” Sienna countered, her voice unwavering. “Children aren’t business projects, Mr. Pierce. They don’t thrive on strict schedules alone.”

His jaw clenched. “I hired you to follow instructions, not question them.”

Sienna smiled, but there was defiance in her eyes. “And you hired me to take care of your daughter, which means I will do what’s best for her.”

A tense silence stretched between them.

For a moment, Grayson simply stared at her, his gray eyes sharp and assessing. It was clear he wasn’t used to being challenged, especially not by an employee.

Finally, he exhaled. “Do what you must,” he muttered. “Just don’t expect results overnight.”

Sienna glanced back at Lily, who still sat motionless, staring out the window. No, she didn’t expect results overnight. But she wasn’t going to give up on her, either.

As Grayson turned to leave, Sienna called after him, “Mr. Pierce.”

He stopped but didn’t turn around.

“Lily needs more than just a nanny. She needs her father.”

His shoulders tensed, but he said nothing. A moment later, he disappeared down the hallway, leaving Sienna alone with Lily once more.

She sighed and settled back onto the floor beside the little girl, offering a warm smile. “You don’t have to talk, Lily. But I’ll be here when you’re ready.”

For the briefest second, Lily’s fingers twitched against her sleeve. A subtle, almost imperceptible reaction, but Sienna noticed.

And so did Grayson—standing just outside the doorway, listening.

For a man who controlled everything, this—his daughter’s pain—was the one thing beyond his grasp.

And for the first time, Grayson Pierce looked at Sienna Carter like she was more than just an employee. **She was a problem he hadn’t yet figured out.**

The following days passed as the slow unfolding of a new season—timid, but hopeful. Something had shifted between Sienna and Grayson. The tension surrounding them no longer flared with tension only, but with a gentler voltage, one made up of stolen glances and seconds that lingered too long. Neither, though, could afford to speak of it out loud.It was Lily who kept them in check. Her infectious giggles filled the house with warmth that even softened Grayson's normally cold temperament. Sienna watched as he worked on a puzzle with Lily in the living room, his furrowed brow a picture of concern as Lily giggled at his failure."No, not that one, Daddy! That's the corner piece!" Lily scolded with a bright smile.Grayson arched an eyebrow, pretending to be offended. "Are you questioning my puzzle skills, young lady?"Sienna laughed from the couch, where she was folding Lily's clothes. "She has a point, you know. You're a CEO, not a puzzle mastermind."He looked up, his eyes locking with h

The weak light of dawn filtered through the curtains, casting the room in a gentle glow. Sienna stirred, her eyes fluttering open to find herself cuddled up against Grayson's chest. The soft thump of his heartbeat was a comforting rhythm under her ear, and for a moment, she allowed herself to simply exist in this peaceful bubble. Grayson's arm around her pulled her closer as he whispered, "Good morning."Sienna rolled her head to look up at him, a smile playing on her lips. "Morning."They lay in silence for a while, what had occurred the previous night still lingering in the air between them. It had been a night of revelation, of walls crumbling and secrets shared. But with dawn came new uncertainty.Sienna pushed herself up onto one elbow, studying Grayson's face. "What now?"He leaned in to tuck a strand of hair behind her ear. "We do it one day at a time. No secrets, no pushing you away."She searched for any hint of uncertainty in his eyes but didn't see it. "Are you certain?"G

The sun filtered through the sheer curtains, illuminating the room with a warm glow. Sienna sat on the edge of her bed, a cup of coffee cradled in her hands, her thoughts a maelstrom of emotions. The last couple of days ran themselves over in her mind—Grayson's confession, their time together, and the tension that hung between them. She took a sharp breath, trying to settle the pounding of her heart. Personal and professional had grown blurred, and she didn't know how to navigate the altered dynamics between them. Grayson's moment of vulnerability was unexpected for his usual stoic nature, and she was hopeful and frightened.A soft knock at the door startled her out of her daydreaming. She opened it to find Lily standing before her, a look of wide-eyed curiosity."Good morning, Sienna! Can we have pancakes today?" asked Lily, bubbling with excitement.Sienna smiled, a relief from her self-absorption. "Yes, honey. Let's go make some."---In the kitchen, the scent of pancakes filled th

  • Hate You, Love You   Chapter 48: Shadows Between Us

The house had never been so still.Sienna stood at the French doors of the library, looking out into the moonlit garden. The trees swayed gently, their shadows dancing on the stone path, and the far-off chirping of crickets filled the air. Inside, the air was still warm from the previous hours, but her skin tingled with a chill she couldn't shake off—though it wasn't from the weather. It was the aftermath. It was all different last night. She could still feel him—his hands, his breath on her neck, the way he'd said her name like it was a question and a confession. Grayson Pierce had shattered every wall he'd so carefully built between them in one night, only to reconstruct them again the next morning.God, what did I do?" she breathed to herself, tracing her fingers over her lips as though that would render him kiss her forgettable. Footsteps approached behind her. Her back stiffened. Grayson. She didn't need to turn because she knew it was him. She could feel him in the air—electr

Sunlight crept into the room like a guilty secret, sliding through the openings in the heavy curtains and tracing gentle golden lines along the tangled sheets.Sienna stirred first. She didn't know where she was for a moment. The pillow beneath her cheek was unfamiliar—rich, silk-soft. The subtle fragrance surrounding her wasn't her own. Cedarwood. Clean linen. Him.Then she felt the warmth of his body behind her. A strong arm was draped casually over her waist, fingers relaxed against the curve of her hip. His steady breathing stirred the loose strands of her hair. Her eyes flew open.Grayson Pierce. Her boss. The man who'd kept her at arm's length for weeks, who'd wielded emotional distance like a weapon, had made love to her last night. No—not made love. Had taken her. Claimed her.And she'd let him.No, worse. She'd wanted it.Oh God, had she wanted it.She shifted slowly, her weight barely moving, not wishing to disturb him, needing to grant herself a few precious seconds to unra

Electric. Destructive. And tonight. it was oppressive.Lily slept. The lights were dimmed. The city shone in the far distance below them.Sienna stood in the kitchen, absently twisting a glass of water between her hands. She could feel him before she saw him — Grayson’s presence always arrived first. Heavy. Magnetic.“I thought you’d gone to bed,” his low voice rumbled behind her.Sienna’s spine stiffened — not because of fear, but because of the ache in her chest she was trying so hard to smother."I couldn't sleep," she whispered, not turning around.Silence hung between them — tense, humming. Then footsteps.Intentional.

The silence in Grayson Pierce’s car was heavier than words could fill.Sienna sat beside him, her arms crossed tightly over her chest, staring out the window at the passing city lights. Her heart was pounding from the argument they’d had in his office — sharp words, stubbornness, emotions neither of them wanted to face. And yet here they were. Both pretending that kiss never happened. Both pretending the tension between them wasn’t unbearable.Grayson’s grip tightened on the steering wheel. The house was unnaturally quiet.Sienna stood in the kitchen, her fingers curled tightly around the edge of the marble counter as she replayed Grayson’s words over and over in her head."This can’t happen again.""I don't mix business with...whatever this is."She could still feel the press of his lips on hers — burning, unforgettable — only to be crushed under the weight of his rejection minutes later.A bitter laugh escaped her lips. How foolish she’d been. She didn’t notice Lily standing in the doorway until her tiny voice broke through the storm in Sienna’s mind."Aunt Sienna? Sienna stood by the large window in the living room, arms folded tightly against her chest, staring out at the dark sky smeared with streaks of orange from the setting sun. Her mind was chaos — swirling memories of the kiss she swore she wouldn’t think about again. But how could she not?Grayson Pierce — infuriating, cold, impossible Grayson — had kissed her like he couldn’t help himself… and then acted like it hadn’t happened.Coward.She heard his footsteps behind her. She didn’t turn.“I thought you had a rule about silence being golden, Mr. Pierce,” she said coolly. There was a beat of hesitation. Self-awareness looks good on you.”His jaw clenched. “Sienna…”There it was again — her name on his lips. Like velvet. Like sin.S
