Iva

It was Sunday night, so Mom was curled up on her bed watching Columbo. This was her Sunday night tradition while she prepped her cases if she had court Monday morning. But tonight, Columbo had her full attention. Everyone loves a good detective because they provide the one commodity that is universally wanted—answers. I desperately wished Columbo would show up and tell me what was going on. The thought of handling it alone made me weary to my bones.

I couldn’t blame my lack of energy entire

  • Have Power, Must Travel   CHAPTER THIRTY-FOUR

IvaMy head rested on a paper-thin pillow. The horrid hospital gown had somehow twisted in opposite directions around my middle, and my underwear had crawled so far up my ass crack it was going to take five minutes to straighten everything out. As I sorted things in the dim room, a giggle from the nearby chair made me halt. I knew that fucking laugh. The annoyed groan that escaped my lips was involuntary.“No need for all that. To quote you, I come in peace,” Kennedy said.I looked at her and was shocked by her appearance. She appeared disheveled, and although it was dark, I could have sworn there was a giant zit on her forehead. I pressed the button on the bed to turn on the overhead light. Yep, there was a huge knot right in the middle of her forehead. My eyes were immediately glued to it. Kennedy’s hand flew to cover it up. But then she gave me a snarky smile.“Pretty gorgeous, isn’t it? I was thinking of naming it Iva’s Oculus in honor of the extreme stress you have caused my syst

  • Have Power, Must Travel   CHAPTER THIRTY-THREE

KennedyA few seconds after I asked where the hell Iva was, she materialized next to the sideboard a few feet from the dining room table. Shaming myself for the second time that night, I shrieked like a girl. My shame eased when the President drowned out my pathetic scream. But I couldn’t imagine any of us looked as surprised as Iva. She jumped back and slammed into the sideboard, knocking over some of Ms. Galen’s pop-up containers full of snack foods in her never-ending quest to organize their kitchen.Iva mumbled something that sounded like “What the fuck?” when she looked around the room and saw her parents, the President, and the rest of us sitting on the family movie-watching couch. Her face shifted from shock to an indiscernible expression when she reached me.“Kennedy, what are you doing here?” she said with what sounded like pain in her voice. Before I could decipher her odd reaction, the President spoke in a forceful voice that most women would kill to master.“Bannon, Forbes

  • Have Power, Must Travel   CHAPTER THIRTY-TWO

IvaThree eighteen-wheeled trucks idled behind the warehouse. In the far-right truck, I discovered the remaining people from the break room of the warehouse. They were huddled in the back of the cargo container as if getting as far from the door as possible would provide some measure of safety. I closed and bolted the doors. I hated keeping those people in there for a second longer, but since I planned on driving them out, they would have to sit tight. While turning the truck corner, something hard and fast struck me in the nose. Although my power softened the effect, I staggered back and let the pain roll through me. I stayed on my feet long enough for the next hit to land in my gut. That punch sent my attacker reeling back, holding his hand, and gave me the seconds I needed to recover. Abs of steel? No. But I did have the common sense to wear a bulletproof vest when it was offered, especially given all the trigger-happy assholes running around. Unfortunately, before I could launch m

  • Have Power, Must Travel   CHAPTER THIRTY-ONE

KennedyI knew I should be tired. But my head had filled with so much adrenaline, anger, and frustration that I felt capable of running a four-minute mile. And I hated to run. But I would run until I puked if it would get me somewhere calm. I could not believe my best friend of over a decade had not told me about her superpowers. Worse, she had chosen a stranger to confide in. Luke claimed that her not caring about him was what made him the perfect confidant. And Iva’s mom claimed it was because she didn’t want to drag me into hell with her. There may have been some truth in what they said, but those weren’t the only reasons. No, I knew her decision to cut me out was driven by a lack of trust. I hadn’t behaved well when she started pulling away. I’d been jealous, accusatory, and, at times, just plain nasty. In my defense, my heart was breaking. Not the traits you want in someone you share your biggest secret with. I hated her for not telling me. But I hated myself more for being unwor

  • Have Power, Must Travel   CHAPTER THIRTY

IvaI considered taking the flags off the car but decided to hell with it. Landry was going to shit his pants when I showed up with our ride, but to hell with that too. I hadn’t teleported something this big before, but I didn’t think size would be a factor. Since it wasn’t alive, I didn’t have to worry about killing it. I thought of the access road next to the warehouse and teleported to a portion I hoped was abandoned. The car and I arrived, and I didn’t see anyone. I held my breath as I pushed the button to turn it on and prayed that I had teleported every part of the car and stolen the correct key from the box in the garage. It sputtered and then purred to life. My only regret was my lack of douchey driving gloves because my hands were absolutely about to sweat. I put the car in drive and peeled out like the asshole I was. When I arrived, dust billowing out behind the car, I guiltily relished the alarmed looks. I always did my best to conceal myself and my powers because there wer

  • Have Power, Must Travel   CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE

GrantKennedy was determined to get answers, and I sympathized with anyone who crossed her path. Anyone except Luke. To me, he was an interloper. Or perhaps something worse; I had yet to decide. He didn’t fit in all of this. Besides her parents, why would someone who only recently met Iva possess more information about her than the two friends she’d been closest to for most of her life? Luke wasn’t even Iva’s type. He was too polished and too perfect.Or maybe he was exactly her type, given that Kennedy had been her best friend for the better part of a decade. Or, and this thought hurt the most, maybe I didn’t know Iva at all. I realized that she had changed more than I thought in the past two years. Perhaps if I had been there during the change, it would have been less disturbing as I gradually got used to it. She had been a fixed point in my life, almost like my sister. I had tried to stay a part of her life, but college and then my business had kept me away from my family. But I ha
