Chapter 3

مؤلف: Bean-O
I lunged forward and shoved Sabrina away. She stumbled, her expression darkening instantly.

The men with her grabbed me at once and wrenched the phone out of my hand.

I tried to snatch it back, but they shoved me into the wall so hard that my forehead went numb from the impact.

Sabrina held my phone, glanced down at the screen, and let out a cold laugh.

"Thinking of calling the police? Who do you think they'd believe, me or you?"

She turned the phone over in her hand, pulled a check from her purse, and flicked it onto the floor in front of me.

"Walk away now, and you'll at least leave with something. But if you don't know what's good for you, you'll end up with nothing."

I looked down, and my fingers went still.

The figure written on it was more money than I'd ever let myself imagine.

In my senior year of high school, I got into Harwell University. Then, Nora fell ill, the debts piled up, and I couldn't even cover tuition. I had no choice but to give up my spot.

And now, the woman living my life was throwing that kind of money at my feet just to make me disappear.

I didn't reach for the check. I just wiped the blood from the corner of my mouth.

Sabrina looked down at me with open contempt. "If I hear you've gone near Chandler again, this ends one way for you—dead."

After she left with her men, the apartment went dead quiet again.

I crouched down to pick up the frame. A shard of glass bit into my finger, and blood welled up right away.

I barely registered the pain. I just stared at the cracked photo.

The crack ran right across Nora's face.

A laugh caught in my throat.

I hadn't fought for anything. I hadn't asked for anything. Yet someone still thought they had the right to walk all over me.

That night, there was another knock at the door. I thought Sabrina had come back, but it was Chandler standing outside.

I didn't open the door. Instead, I asked through it, "What are you doing here?"

Silence hung on the other side for a few seconds before he blurted out, "Why did you have to provoke her?"

I almost laughed out loud.

He was the one getting married while planning to keep me on the side. Sabrina was the one who'd brought men to tear my home apart.

Yet here Chandler was, asking why I'd provoked her.

I leaned against the door, my voice hoarse. "Chandler, don't you have this backward? I'm not the one who lost her mind, and I'm not the one who smashed everything."

He went quiet for a moment, then softened his tone. "I'll make up for what happened this afternoon. And I'll talk to Brina and tell her not to pull anything like that again.

"Lena, stop making this hard. It's not like I'm abandoning you."

The same lines.

Every word was designed to soothe me just enough to keep me waiting.

Exhaustion hit me all at once. "Just go."

He didn't budge. "Open the door first. Let's talk."

I remained silent and made no move.

Just then, his phone rang. He picked up quickly, answered in a low murmur, and left me with one line. "Wait for me. We'll talk when I get back."

His footsteps quickly faded away.

I stood behind the door with nothing left to say.

Chandler was always like this—promising he'd come back, only to be the first to turn away when the time came to choose.

He didn't come back for the next two days. His family had likely tied him down with wedding preparations.

I thought things might quiet down, at least for a while. But the day before the wedding, Sabrina returned.

This time, she didn't waste words.

The door had barely opened when several women rushed in and pinned me to the floor. They yanked my hair and slapped me across the face, their knees digging painfully into my back.

Somewhere in the chaos, some hard object smashed into my forehead, and blood ran down my face.

Sabrina stood off to the side, watching me curl up on the ground and tossing out a cold remark. "Touch what isn't yours, and you'll pay for it."

I gritted my teeth and didn't argue back because I suddenly remembered a break-in in our building a while back. I'd been worried about my safety, so I'd installed a security camera.

The indicator light was still on. Every single thing they were doing was being recorded.

Only after they left did I brace myself against the wall and slowly push myself up.

Blood was streaming down my forehead. When I pressed a hand to it, my palm came away red.

I grabbed my phone and ID and then headed to the hospital alone.

I had just walked out of the building when I saw Chandler.

A year later, I officially changed my name back.My name was Lena Shaw.A lot had changed over the past year.My relationship with the Shaws had slowly begun to improve too. We didn't suddenly become close. Too many years had been lost for everything to be made right overnight.Victoria still teared up from time to time. If I didn't eat much, she'd ask if something was wrong. If I stayed up too late, she'd urge me to go to bed.Matthew still wasn't one for affectionate words. But whenever I came home late from work, he'd have the kitchen keep some soup warm for me.Sometimes when I went back for dinner, he'd casually mention a new project that might be a good experience for me to take on and ask if I wanted to take a look. They were learning how to get closer to me, and I was no longer as resistant as I'd been in the beginning.I never casually told them I forgave them, but I didn't deliberately shut them out to get back at them either.I simply accepted that some regrets coul

Once the police got involved, things moved faster than I expected. At first, Sabrina still tried to talk her way out of it. But as the security footage, the hospital report detailing my injuries, and the payment records showing she'd paid for the secretly filmed videos were uncovered one by one, her excuses began to fall apart. On top of that, the assistant who had gone with her to my apartment cracked under pressure and agreed to testify. The secretly filmed videos were especially serious. Once the police dug deeper, the case went far beyond simply posting a few photos online. This time, the Shaw family didn't stand up for her.It wasn't because they'd suddenly developed a moral compass. At this point, protecting her would mean continuing to take her side against me, essentially admitting they were willing to let an impostor hurt their own biological daughter.Matthew wasn't about to make that kind of losing move. Before long, Sabrina was officially thrown out of the Shaw fami

I was right. Sabrina's final counterattack was just as filthy as I'd expected. She knew there was no changing the truth about our identities, and arguing over who was the real Shaw daughter would only humiliate her further. So, she changed tactics. Before long, secretly recorded videos and maliciously edited photos began circulating online. The posts claimed that during the years I'd spent living in poverty as the real heiress, I'd slept around to get ahead. They accused me of knowingly seducing Chandler even though he was engaged, and some even implied that I'd crashed the wedding not to reunite with my biological family, but to use my status as the real Shaw daughter to pressure Chandler into marrying me.The moment those posts went live, the Internet exploded. Most people didn't care about the truth. They just wanted front-row seats to see who would end up looking more pathetic. When I checked my phone, I was flooded with messages and comments. Even my former coworkers were

Once the paternity results came back, the Shaws moved fast. Racks of clothes and boxes of jewelry were delivered straight from the stores, almost all of it arriving on the same day—as if giving me enough could somehow make up for everything I'd missed in one go.But looking at the boxes spread across the living room, all I felt was how unfamiliar it all was. No excitement. No satisfaction at finally coming out on top. Just absurdity. When I was struggling to survive, they were nowhere to be found. Where had they been when I needed them most? Now that everyone knew I was the real Shaw daughter, they couldn't pile these luxuries in front of me fast enough. The day Victoria came to see me, her eyes were red and swollen. Sitting across from me, she apologized over and over, explaining that they hadn't given up on searching for me. Leads had gone cold, false information had sent them in the wrong direction, and one misstep had led to another.I listened without interrupting.Tow

After all that chaos, there was no way the wedding could go ahead as planned that day.The Shaws cleared the venue immediately, while the Paynes moved just as quickly to handle the press, trying to contain the fallout inside the hotel. But a scandal of that magnitude was never going to stay hidden. Within two hours, secretly recorded videos were already circulating online.#PayneShawWeddingDisaster#BrideIdentityInDoubt#PayneHeirFakedAmnesiaForSexBeforeWeddingEvery hashtag was sensational enough to stop anyone mid-scroll.By that evening, the results of the expedited paternity test came back, confirming that I was the real Shaw daughter and that Sabrina was the baby who had been switched with me all those years ago. When the results were laid out, Victoria covered her mouth and burst into tears. She sank onto the couch as if all her strength had suddenly drained away.Matthew's face was grim.Having the wedding devolve into a public spectacle was humiliating enough, but wha

All eyes in the bridal suite fell on the pendant in my hand. The moment Victoria saw it, she took a step forward, her lips trembling."This… This pendant…"Her voice shook, her gaze locked onto it as if she were afraid to recognize it, yet even more afraid she might be wrong.I met her eyes without flinching. I knew she'd recognize it.Back then, when the hospital mixed up the babies, this pendant was what stayed with me.Over the years, the Shaws had looked into it quietly, chasing lead after lead, only for every trail to go cold. This pendant was one of the few pieces of hard evidence that could confirm their real daughter's identity.Sabrina recovered fast. The stiffness on her face lasted just a few seconds before she scrambled to her feet, gathered the skirt of her gown, and stormed toward me."What exactly do you want?" she demanded. "You show up at my wedding with some junk pendant from God knows where and think you can make a scene?"As she spoke, her gaze swept ov
