Chapter 4

مؤلف: Bean-O
Chandler had probably come straight from the wedding venue, given that he was still wearing his black suit.

He walked up to me, and his expression shifted when he noticed the bandage on my forehead.

"Brina did this?"

I didn't answer.

He reached for me, but I stepped back before he could touch me.

His hand froze in midair. Then, he lowered his voice and made me a promise I had little faith in. "I'll talk to her. I'll make sure she never lays a hand on you again."

I looked at him, amused by how absurd he sounded.

"Again?" I sneered.

Chandler pressed his lips into a thin line. "The wedding is tomorrow. Just put up with it for now. Once it's over, I'll make it up to you."

As those words landed, the last lingering feelings I had for him shattered.

He could see I'd been badly beaten and knew exactly who was responsible, yet all he could tell me was to endure it.

I grabbed the paper cup off the bedside table and hurled it at his feet.

"Get out!" My voice cracked. "Chandler, get the hell out!"

He stood there for a long moment without moving.

I turned my face away, refusing to give him another glance.

Once he was gone, I pulled the old pendant from my bag, backed up the security footage, and finally pulled up the audio recording.

Good. Every piece of evidence I needed was right here.

This time, I wasn't going to take any of it.

I was discharged from the hospital on the exact day of their wedding.

My apartment was still a wreck when I got back.

I'd barely stepped inside when my phone buzzed with a notification—a termination notice from my company. The stated reason was that my personal conduct had damaged the firm's image.

I skimmed the message and closed it.

Only Sabrina would go to such lengths. She didn't just want to hurt me. She wanted to make sure there was no place left for me in this city.

I'd never intended for any of this to go so far. I'd never wanted to fight for a spot in a wealthy family, nor had I ever planned to claim my way into a better life. All I'd ever wanted was to live a quiet life.

They were the ones who wouldn't leave me alone. So, they had no right to blame me for what came next.

I was changing clothes when Sabrina sent me a photo.

It showed a rumpled bed with two bodies pressed tightly together, the camera angle deliberately chosen to make it look as suggestive as possible.

Beneath it was a single line of text. "Take a good look at whose bed he's in tonight."

I looked at it for just a few seconds and deleted it without a second thought.

I pressed a hand to the bandage on my forehead, picked up the envelope, and walked out.

The wedding venue was even more crowded and bustling than I'd expected.

Everyone present wore the eager look of spectators awaiting a show. They had gathered to celebrate the union of the Payne and Shaw families—a merger of pure power and prestige.

What none of them realized was that the wrong woman had been standing in that spotlight all along.

I walked straight to the bridal suite and pushed the door open. Every head in the room turned toward me.

Sabrina stood before the mirror in her wedding gown. Chandler was there too. The moment he saw me, the color drained from his face.

I stood in the doorway with a bandage taped across my forehead, dressed in plain clothes that looked completely out of place amid the luxury.

Still, I held my head high.

I met Sabrina's eyes, my voice unwavering. "I had no intention of coming to your wedding. But you kept pushing until you forgot who you really are."

The smile froze on her face.

Chandler stared at me, his frown tightening with every passing second.

I didn't look back at him. I simply took the pendant out of the envelope and held it up for everyone to see.

"You've been standing in my place all these years. Today seems like a good day for you to give back what's mine."

Hushed whispers broke out near the doorway. My biological parents, the Shaws, came hurrying in from the hall. The moment Victoria Shaw's eyes landed on the pendant, her face turned ash-white.

Watching her reaction, Chandler finally put it together. He looked at me, and for the first time, there was panic in his eyes.

But it was already too late.

A year later, I officially changed my name back.My name was Lena Shaw.A lot had changed over the past year.My relationship with the Shaws had slowly begun to improve too. We didn't suddenly become close. Too many years had been lost for everything to be made right overnight.Victoria still teared up from time to time. If I didn't eat much, she'd ask if something was wrong. If I stayed up too late, she'd urge me to go to bed.Matthew still wasn't one for affectionate words. But whenever I came home late from work, he'd have the kitchen keep some soup warm for me.Sometimes when I went back for dinner, he'd casually mention a new project that might be a good experience for me to take on and ask if I wanted to take a look. They were learning how to get closer to me, and I was no longer as resistant as I'd been in the beginning.I never casually told them I forgave them, but I didn't deliberately shut them out to get back at them either.I simply accepted that some regrets coul

Once the police got involved, things moved faster than I expected. At first, Sabrina still tried to talk her way out of it. But as the security footage, the hospital report detailing my injuries, and the payment records showing she'd paid for the secretly filmed videos were uncovered one by one, her excuses began to fall apart. On top of that, the assistant who had gone with her to my apartment cracked under pressure and agreed to testify. The secretly filmed videos were especially serious. Once the police dug deeper, the case went far beyond simply posting a few photos online. This time, the Shaw family didn't stand up for her.It wasn't because they'd suddenly developed a moral compass. At this point, protecting her would mean continuing to take her side against me, essentially admitting they were willing to let an impostor hurt their own biological daughter.Matthew wasn't about to make that kind of losing move. Before long, Sabrina was officially thrown out of the Shaw fami

I was right. Sabrina's final counterattack was just as filthy as I'd expected. She knew there was no changing the truth about our identities, and arguing over who was the real Shaw daughter would only humiliate her further. So, she changed tactics. Before long, secretly recorded videos and maliciously edited photos began circulating online. The posts claimed that during the years I'd spent living in poverty as the real heiress, I'd slept around to get ahead. They accused me of knowingly seducing Chandler even though he was engaged, and some even implied that I'd crashed the wedding not to reunite with my biological family, but to use my status as the real Shaw daughter to pressure Chandler into marrying me.The moment those posts went live, the Internet exploded. Most people didn't care about the truth. They just wanted front-row seats to see who would end up looking more pathetic. When I checked my phone, I was flooded with messages and comments. Even my former coworkers were

Once the paternity results came back, the Shaws moved fast. Racks of clothes and boxes of jewelry were delivered straight from the stores, almost all of it arriving on the same day—as if giving me enough could somehow make up for everything I'd missed in one go.But looking at the boxes spread across the living room, all I felt was how unfamiliar it all was. No excitement. No satisfaction at finally coming out on top. Just absurdity. When I was struggling to survive, they were nowhere to be found. Where had they been when I needed them most? Now that everyone knew I was the real Shaw daughter, they couldn't pile these luxuries in front of me fast enough. The day Victoria came to see me, her eyes were red and swollen. Sitting across from me, she apologized over and over, explaining that they hadn't given up on searching for me. Leads had gone cold, false information had sent them in the wrong direction, and one misstep had led to another.I listened without interrupting.Tow

After all that chaos, there was no way the wedding could go ahead as planned that day.The Shaws cleared the venue immediately, while the Paynes moved just as quickly to handle the press, trying to contain the fallout inside the hotel. But a scandal of that magnitude was never going to stay hidden. Within two hours, secretly recorded videos were already circulating online.#PayneShawWeddingDisaster#BrideIdentityInDoubt#PayneHeirFakedAmnesiaForSexBeforeWeddingEvery hashtag was sensational enough to stop anyone mid-scroll.By that evening, the results of the expedited paternity test came back, confirming that I was the real Shaw daughter and that Sabrina was the baby who had been switched with me all those years ago. When the results were laid out, Victoria covered her mouth and burst into tears. She sank onto the couch as if all her strength had suddenly drained away.Matthew's face was grim.Having the wedding devolve into a public spectacle was humiliating enough, but wha

All eyes in the bridal suite fell on the pendant in my hand. The moment Victoria saw it, she took a step forward, her lips trembling."This… This pendant…"Her voice shook, her gaze locked onto it as if she were afraid to recognize it, yet even more afraid she might be wrong.I met her eyes without flinching. I knew she'd recognize it.Back then, when the hospital mixed up the babies, this pendant was what stayed with me.Over the years, the Shaws had looked into it quietly, chasing lead after lead, only for every trail to go cold. This pendant was one of the few pieces of hard evidence that could confirm their real daughter's identity.Sabrina recovered fast. The stiffness on her face lasted just a few seconds before she scrambled to her feet, gathered the skirt of her gown, and stormed toward me."What exactly do you want?" she demanded. "You show up at my wedding with some junk pendant from God knows where and think you can make a scene?"As she spoke, her gaze swept ov
