Chapter 2

Author: Binky Babe
[Someone please tell him that Older Adrian is already worth over a hundred billion dollars! Hahaha!]

I almost laughed from sheer irritation.

Just then, someone knocked on the office door.

Adrian’s secretary, Caleb Quinn, walked in carrying a stack of documents.

He paused when he saw the scene in front of him, but quickly recovered and walked straight over to me.

“Ms. Shaw, the other side on the West District project is holding firm at 3.7 billion. Do we keep pushing the price down?”

Adrian immediately looked over.

“Why are you asking her?”

Caleb looked uncomfortable.

“Mr. Pierce, given your condition these past two weeks…”

He hesitated before continuing.

“Mrs. Pierce has been handling several of the company’s major projects, including matters involving the board.”

Adrian opened his mouth, then stopped.

Documents were spread across the desk.

Every note written across them was in my handwriting.

I slid the West District file toward him.

“Then you decide.

“Three point seven billion. Do we keep negotiating or not?”

He picked it up.

Less than thirty seconds later, his brows drew together.

There was nothing embarrassing about an eighteen-year-old high school student not understanding corporate deals like this.

But clearly, Adrian didn’t see it that way.

“Just because I don’t understand it now doesn’t mean I won’t understand it later.”

He slapped the file back onto the desk.

“Starting today, I’ll run the company myself.”

I nodded.

“You can take your time learning.”

“But the tens of thousands of people who work for Pierce Corporation can’t wait ten years for you to catch up.”

Adrian’s face instantly flushed red.

Vivian quickly took his hand.

“I may not be as capable as Ms. Shaw, but I can still help you review documents and organize things.”

Adrian’s eyes lit up.

“Then you can help me.

“Starting today, you’re Vice President.”

Vivian hurriedly waved her hands.

“Adrian, don’t be ridiculous. How could I possibly do that?”

She glanced at me.

“Ms. Shaw might be upset.”

I looked at her.

“A vice president position isn’t something you hand out to make your girlfriend happy.”

Her eyes reddened almost instantly.

“If Ms. Shaw doesn’t trust me, I can start at the bottom.

“I only want to help you, Adrian.”

Adrian immediately stepped in front of her.

“It’s my company.

“If I say she’s Vice President, then she’s Vice President.”

The comments began flooding in again.

[Ahhh! This is what young love looks like! He just wants to give his girl everything he has!]

[Why is the supporting female lead still here? She’s occupied someone else’s husband, company, and money for years, and now she can’t even give up one VP position?]

[When Older Adrian comes back and sees that his eighteen-year-old self fixed both his love life and his career, he’s going to be so grateful to himself!]

My fingers tightened slightly around my pen.

“Caleb.”

“Yes, Ms. Shaw?”

“Process the appointment through the proper company channels.

“Send it to the board and legal. If it requires a vote, hold the vote. If it needs to be formally filed, file it.

“Don’t skip any steps just because Mr. Pierce personally ordered it.”

Adrian’s head snapped up.

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

“Nothing.”

I closed my laptop.

“You want to run the company. I’m not stopping you.

“But a corporation isn’t something you play around with.”

He hated being treated like a child more than anything.

Sure enough, he exploded.

“Stop acting like you know everything!”

He turned to Caleb.

“Cut off all her access.

“Approval authority, project access, executive-floor access. Everything.”

Caleb didn’t move.

He only glanced at me.

I knew exactly why he was hesitating.

As long as I refused to approve it, carrying out Adrian’s order would put him in an impossible position.

But Adrian was still legally the chairman and CEO of Pierce Corporation.

If we started fighting over control of the company right here in his office, tomorrow’s financial headlines would be screaming about a power struggle between the Pierces.

The stock price would take the hit.

And tens of thousands of employees would be affected.

There was no reason to let things go that far over fifteen days.

“Do as he says.”

Caleb lowered his voice.

“Ms. Shaw…”

“It’s fine.”

I handed him the final file.

“All my risk notes for the West District project are inside. Give it to the project team.”

With that, I picked up my coat.

As I walked past Adrian, his jaw was still set tight.

He looked like someone who believed he had finally won a battle.

I didn’t bother explaining anything else.

The eighteen-year-old version of him wouldn’t understand.

And I had no intention of forcing Caleb into the middle of this.

Behind Adrian, Vivian stood quietly.

But the smile tugging at the corner of her lips was impossible to hide.

During my first week back, a client asked me a question in a meeting that I couldn’t answer. That night, I stood under the hot water in the shower and suddenly wanted to call Adrian. In the past, all I had to do was ask.Within half an hour, he probably would’ve had every relevant document sent to me, along with a list of exactly who I needed to contact.I picked up my phone. Then I put it back down. The next day, I reached out to three former colleagues and took them out to dinner. The problem still got solved. Not as quickly as Adrian would’ve solved it.But it wasn’t nearly as difficult as I had imagined either. As time went on, the thought of calling Adrian came to me less and less.It wasn’t because I didn’t need him.I was simply starting to remember that I used to know how to solve my own problems too. When the West District deal was finally closed, Caleb called me.“Ms. Shaw, the other side finally came down another two percent.”I laughed.“You don’t have to ca

“At the company, all the access and authority were in your hands. At home, it was the same.“You arranged the drivers. The legal team worked for you. Even when Grandma had surgery three years ago, I didn’t know which doctors you contacted or how you got them here.“I used to think that was a good thing.“You took care of everything for me, and all I had to do was live my life without worrying about anything.”I looked up at him.“But that day, when I couldn’t even get through my own front door, I realized something.“If you weren’t there, I didn’t even know where I stood anymore.”Adrian’s throat moved.“It was my—”“It wasn’t your fault.”I cut him off.“And loving me the way you did wasn’t wrong either.“I was the one who handed over too much of my life.”I zipped up my suitcase.“So now I want some of it back.”Adrian looked at me for a long time.“Including our marriage?”My hand stilled. It was the first time since he came back that he had asked me so directly.

“The divorce was never legally finalized.”The attorney continued, “And several provisions in the agreement attempt to dispose of marital assets.”“We’ll handle everything from here.”Adrian nodded.“Recover whatever needs to be recovered.”Then he added,“Don’t touch anything in Anna’s name or anything she owned before the marriage.”The attorney paused.“Of course.”Adrian’s expression remained grim.“I’m reminding myself.”Caleb immediately lowered his head, trying to hide his reaction.I almost laughed. Then I decided laughing probably wasn’t appropriate and turned my face away instead.Adrian noticed. For the first time in days, some of the tension left his expression. The last issue was the pink diamond.Vivian refused to return it.She insisted Adrian had personally given it to her.Technically, eighteen-year-old Adrian had. After hearing that, Adrian only asked the attorney one question.“Which account paid for it?”“The family office account.”“Then hand

And yet the very next day, he asked me out again.Adrian continued, “The third time, I wanted to see her.“The fourth time too.“And every time after that.”He looked at Vivian.“Don’t reduce six years of someone else’s life to the fact that she happens to look like you.”The floating comments seemed to crash completely. For a long time, nothing appeared.Then:[…][Wait. What exactly have we been shipping this whole time?][Hold on. So who was actually the substitute here?]I didn’t feel any sense of victory.I was just tired.“Adrian.”His eyes immediately turned to me.“Don’t argue in the hospital.”He paused.“Okay.”Vivian opened her mouth as if she wanted to say something else, but eighteen-year-old Adrian had already removed her hand from his arm.“I told you yesterday not to use someone’s life to force her into anything.”For the first time, the reckless defiance was gone from his young face.“You lied to me.”Vivian went pale.“Adrian, I did it all for—

There was also a message underneath.[Mr. Pierce, since the patient’s family has changed the treatment plan, we’ll cancel our trip for now.
