Chapter 3

Author: Binky Babe
The moment I stepped out of Pierce Corporation, a gust of wind slipped down my collar.

My phone rang.

“Ms. Shaw? The cardiac support device you ordered has arrived.”

I froze for a moment.

Adrian had pulled a lot of strings to get that device before the soul swap.

It was still in clinical trials.

He had gone through all that trouble because my grandmother had always had a weak heart.

I rushed to the nursing facility and handed the device over to her doctor.

When Grandma saw that I had come alone, she glanced toward the door twice.

“Where’s Adrian? I haven’t seen him in two weeks. Did you two have a fight?”

“No.”

I tucked the blanket more securely around her.

“He’s been busy lately. He’ll come see you in a few days.”

Grandma sighed.

“At my age, who knows how many ‘few days’ I have left?”

Then, as always, she started fussing over Adrian.

“Adrian always gets an upset stomach when he catches a chill. Make sure he keeps his stomach warm.

“And don’t laugh at that old herbal remedy I taught you last time. It works.

“If he hadn’t brought in those specialists three years ago, I probably wouldn’t even be here now.”

I lowered my head with a small smile.

But my eyes stung.

Sometimes, even when someone wasn’t there, traces of them remained everywhere.

The device was one.

Grandma talking about Adrian was another.

So I could only keep waiting.

Fifteen more days.

That evening, when I returned to the house, I pressed my finger against the scanner at the front door.

“Fingerprint not recognized.”

The mechanical voice was cold and unmistakably clear.

[Hahaha! He even deleted her fingerprint. Now does she understand who the real lady of the house is?]

[Vivian already moved in. How does the supporting female lead still have the nerve to come back?]

[Young Adrian said he’d give Vivian a home, and he really meant it!]

I stood outside without moving.

Mr. Walker appeared on the other side of the security panel, looking deeply uncomfortable.

“Mrs. Pierce, Mr. Pierce gave instructions that from now on, if you come back, we have to ask his permission first.”

Vivian’s voice floated from inside.

“Mr. Walker, let Ms. Shaw in. It’s cold outside.”

The door opened.

As I stepped inside, a thought suddenly crossed my mind.

What if one day, the twenty-eight-year-old Adrian stopped loving me too?

My home.

My front door.

Everything I had taken for granted.

Apparently, all it took was one sentence from someone else to shut me out.

The thought slowed my steps.

Vivian came over to greet me.

“Ms. Shaw, don’t blame Adrian. He was just worried I wouldn’t feel comfortable living here.”

I ignored her.

Adrian was sprawled across the couch playing a video game.

Without even looking up, he said, “I already contacted an attorney.”

“Tomorrow, I’m getting everything I own formally transferred to Vivian.”

He paused.

“Including this house.”

This time, I really did stop.

I could protect my share of our marital property.

But anything Adrian had owned before our marriage was legally his to dispose of.

By the time the twenty-eight-year-old Adrian returned, some of those things might be impossible to recover.

Of course I wanted to stop him.

But I couldn’t say anything.

Right now, Adrian was convinced I only cared about his money.

If I tried to talk him out of it, he would only take it as proof that I was reluctant to give up his assets.

Worse, he might give Vivian even more just to prove me wrong.

So all I could do was watch.

Mr. Walker stopped me at the bottom of the stairs.

“Mrs. Pierce, your belongings... Mr. Pierce had them moved into the guest room.”

The smallest guest room was tucked away at the far end of the hall.

My clothes and jewelry had been dumped across the bed.

Several of my handbags lay crooked on the floor.

I stood in the doorway for a long time before slowly walking inside.

That was when my mother-in-law called.

“Anna, my birthday dinner is Wednesday. Come early and help me greet the guests.”

“Okay.”

After hanging up, I bent down and picked up a dress from the floor.

Suddenly, I didn’t feel like counting down the days anymore.

I opened my messages and texted my personal attorney.

“Put together a complete list of all marital assets that can be divided.”

Over the next few days, the bills kept coming.

Jewelry.

Designer bags.

Sports cars.

It was as if Adrian wanted to make up for everything his eighteen-year-old self had never been able to give Vivian, all at once.

I stopped interfering.

Instead, I went into the study and pulled out the investment banking notebooks I hadn’t touched in six years.

A layer of dust covered them.

I opened them again.

Then I started reaching out to former colleagues.

Piece by piece, I began rebuilding the assets, connections, and career I had once put aside.

Shielding her from every problem. During my first week back, a client asked me a question in a meeting that I couldn’t answer. That night, I stood under the hot water in the shower and suddenly wanted to call Adrian. In the past, all I had to do was ask.Within half an hour, he probably would’ve had every relevant document sent to me, along with a list of exactly who I needed to contact.I picked up my phone. Then I put it back down. The next day, I reached out to three former colleagues and took them out to dinner. The problem still got solved. Not as quickly as Adrian would’ve solved it.But it wasn’t nearly as difficult as I had imagined either. As time went on, the thought of calling Adrian came to me less and less.It wasn’t because I didn’t need him.I was simply starting to remember that I used to know how to solve my own problems too. When the West District deal was finally closed, Caleb called me.“Ms. Shaw, the other side finally came down another two percent.”I laughed.“You don’t have to ca

“At the company, all the access and authority were in your hands. At home, it was the same.“You arranged the drivers. The legal team worked for you. Even when Grandma had surgery three years ago, I didn’t know which doctors you contacted or how you got them here.“I used to think that was a good thing.“You took care of everything for me, and all I had to do was live my life without worrying about anything.”I looked up at him.“But that day, when I couldn’t even get through my own front door, I realized something.“If you weren’t there, I didn’t even know where I stood anymore.”Adrian’s throat moved.“It was my—”“It wasn’t your fault.”I cut him off.“And loving me the way you did wasn’t wrong either.“I was the one who handed over too much of my life.”I zipped up my suitcase.“So now I want some of it back.”Adrian looked at me for a long time.“Including our marriage?”My hand stilled. It was the first time since he came back that he had asked me so directly.

“The divorce was never legally finalized.”The attorney continued, “And several provisions in the agreement attempt to dispose of marital assets.”“We’ll handle everything from here.”Adrian nodded.“Recover whatever needs to be recovered.”Then he added,“Don’t touch anything in Anna’s name or anything she owned before the marriage.”The attorney paused.“Of course.”Adrian’s expression remained grim.“I’m reminding myself.”Caleb immediately lowered his head, trying to hide his reaction.I almost laughed. Then I decided laughing probably wasn’t appropriate and turned my face away instead.Adrian noticed. For the first time in days, some of the tension left his expression. The last issue was the pink diamond.Vivian refused to return it.She insisted Adrian had personally given it to her.Technically, eighteen-year-old Adrian had. After hearing that, Adrian only asked the attorney one question.“Which account paid for it?”“The family office account.”“Then hand

And yet the very next day, he asked me out again.Adrian continued, “The third time, I wanted to see her.“The fourth time too.“And every time after that.”He looked at Vivian.“Don’t reduce six years of someone else’s life to the fact that she happens to look like you.”The floating comments seemed to crash completely. For a long time, nothing appeared.Then:[…][Wait. What exactly have we been shipping this whole time?][Hold on. So who was actually the substitute here?]I didn’t feel any sense of victory.I was just tired.“Adrian.”His eyes immediately turned to me.“Don’t argue in the hospital.”He paused.“Okay.”Vivian opened her mouth as if she wanted to say something else, but eighteen-year-old Adrian had already removed her hand from his arm.“I told you yesterday not to use someone’s life to force her into anything.”For the first time, the reckless defiance was gone from his young face.“You lied to me.”Vivian went pale.“Adrian, I did it all for—

There was also a message underneath.[Mr. Pierce, since the patient’s family has changed the treatment plan, we’ll cancel our trip for now. Please contact us anytime if you need us later.]The message had been marked as read.Eighteen-year-old Adrian stared at it.“I never saw this.”Vivian’s face went completely white.Adrian handed the phone back to his younger self.“She’s the one you chose.”His voice was calm.“See for yourself.”Eighteen-year-old Adrian looked at Vivian as if he were seeing her for the first time.“Why?”Tears immediately spilled down Vivian’s cheeks.“What else was I supposed to do?“You’re already married. I have nothing.“Anna gets to be Mrs. Pierce. She gets your house, your company, and now your mother even gave her the bracelet.“I waited for you all these years. You finally chose me again, and all I wanted was to take back what should’ve been mine in the first place.”Eighteen-year-old Adrian stared at her.Vivian reached for his hand.“
