Chapter 5

Author: Binky Babe
Once the call connected, Adrian was unusually cooperative.

He didn’t lose his temper or complain.

He carefully answered every question Dr. Wilson asked.

After hanging up, he said, “They’ll be here tomorrow night at eight.”

The tightness in my chest finally eased.

“Thank you.”

Adrian suddenly looked a little uncomfortable and rubbed his nose.

“If you really want to thank me, then divorce me and let Vivian and me be together.”

I looked at him.

“My answer hasn’t changed. When the real Adrian comes back, if he still wants a divorce, I’ll sign.”

As I reached the door, I heard Vivian lower her voice behind me.

“Why didn’t you make her agree to something first?

“She was desperate. If you’d told her to sign the divorce papers before you called the doctors, she would’ve done it.”

“Her grandmother’s life is at stake, and you wanted me to use that against her?”

Adrian’s voice instantly turned cold.

“Do you really think I’m that much of a bastard?”

“That’s not what I meant. I just didn’t want you to get taken advantage of.”

“That still doesn’t mean we take advantage of someone when they’re desperate.”

I didn’t turn around.

At least the eighteen-year-old Adrian hadn’t sunk that low.

The next day around noon, I was about to call Adrian and ask him to come see Grandma before her surgery when Vivian showed up at the hospital first.

She handed me a divorce agreement.

It was the same one as before.

I would walk away with nothing.

“Adrian said the specialist surgical team will only come as scheduled if you sign this.”

I looked up at her.

“No.”

She smiled.

“You can call him and ask.

“But he listens to me now.

“Anna Shaw, I don’t need him to threaten you himself.

“All I need is a way to make sure that surgical team never gets here.”

She glanced toward the emergency room.

“Are you really willing to gamble with your grandmother’s life?”

My fingers slowly went cold.

Adrian hadn’t been like this last night.

But Vivian did know exactly how to manipulate him.

And Grandma’s life wasn’t something I could gamble with.

“I’ll sign.”

I took the pen.

“But I have one condition.

“Have Adrian come to the hospital today and see my grandmother.”

Vivian agreed immediately.

I glanced at the date.

After midnight tonight, the real Adrian would be back.

Grandma’s surgery was scheduled for eight tomorrow morning.

There was still time.

I signed my name.

But I waited until nine that night.

Adrian never came.

And there was still no sign of the medical team that was supposed to arrive at eight.

I called him again and again.

No answer.

The floating comments suddenly appeared.

[Young Adrian and Vivian are back at the house popping champagne to celebrate the divorce!]

[Are they finally going to sleep together tonight?! Ahhh!]

Just then, a doctor hurried out from the operating area.

“Where is Dr. Wilson?

“Her condition is getting worse. We can’t wait any longer!”

I called Adrian one more time.

Still nothing.

I had no choice but to start calling hospitals myself, getting transferred from department to department, desperately trying to track down Dr. Wilson.

Finally, someone on the other end told me,

“Dr. Wilson’s team canceled the trip at around one this afternoon.”

One in the afternoon.

Not long after I had signed the divorce papers.

My phone nearly slipped from my hand.

The doctor looked at me.

“Ms. Shaw, we can’t wait any longer.”

I heard my own voice trembling.

“Then please do the surgery yourselves.”

They handed me the surgical consent form.

My signature came out crooked.

After Grandma was wheeled into the operating room, my legs gave out.

I slid down the wall and sat on the floor.

For once, the floating comments went silent for a long time.

Then a single line slowly drifted past.

[Now I suddenly feel kind of sorry for the supporting female lead.]

The digital clock in the hallway passed midnight.

The operating room doors opened.

The doctor removed his mask.

Then he shook his head at me.

In that instant, I couldn’t hear anything.

I tried to stand.

My legs wouldn’t move.

Then the floating comments suddenly exploded across my vision.

[HOLY SHIT! OLDER ADRIAN?!]

[Why did he come back in his eighteen-year-old body?!]

[It really is Older Adrian!]

My neck stiffened as I slowly turned my head.

At the far end of the hallway, a teenage boy was running toward me.

He still had his eighteen-year-old body.

But I knew that look in his eyes.

I knew it better than anyone.

Adrian rushed up to me, his eyes red and his breathing ragged.

“Baby!”

During my first week back, a client asked me a question in a meeting that I couldn’t answer. That night, I stood under the hot water in the shower and suddenly wanted to call Adrian. In the past, all I had to do was ask.Within half an hour, he probably would’ve had every relevant document sent to me, along with a list of exactly who I needed to contact.I picked up my phone. Then I put it back down. The next day, I reached out to three former colleagues and took them out to dinner. The problem still got solved. Not as quickly as Adrian would’ve solved it.But it wasn’t nearly as difficult as I had imagined either. As time went on, the thought of calling Adrian came to me less and less.It wasn’t because I didn’t need him.I was simply starting to remember that I used to know how to solve my own problems too. When the West District deal was finally closed, Caleb called me.“Ms. Shaw, the other side finally came down another two percent.”I laughed.“You don’t have to ca

“At the company, all the access and authority were in your hands. At home, it was the same.“You arranged the drivers. The legal team worked for you. Even when Grandma had surgery three years ago, I didn’t know which doctors you contacted or how you got them here.“I used to think that was a good thing.“You took care of everything for me, and all I had to do was live my life without worrying about anything.”I looked up at him.“But that day, when I couldn’t even get through my own front door, I realized something.“If you weren’t there, I didn’t even know where I stood anymore.”Adrian’s throat moved.“It was my—”“It wasn’t your fault.”I cut him off.“And loving me the way you did wasn’t wrong either.“I was the one who handed over too much of my life.”I zipped up my suitcase.“So now I want some of it back.”Adrian looked at me for a long time.“Including our marriage?”My hand stilled. It was the first time since he came back that he had asked me so directly.

“The divorce was never legally finalized.”The attorney continued, “And several provisions in the agreement attempt to dispose of marital assets.”“We’ll handle everything from here.”Adrian nodded.“Recover whatever needs to be recovered.”Then he added,“Don’t touch anything in Anna’s name or anything she owned before the marriage.”The attorney paused.“Of course.”Adrian’s expression remained grim.“I’m reminding myself.”Caleb immediately lowered his head, trying to hide his reaction.I almost laughed. Then I decided laughing probably wasn’t appropriate and turned my face away instead.Adrian noticed. For the first time in days, some of the tension left his expression. The last issue was the pink diamond.Vivian refused to return it.She insisted Adrian had personally given it to her.Technically, eighteen-year-old Adrian had. After hearing that, Adrian only asked the attorney one question.“Which account paid for it?”“The family office account.”“Then hand

And yet the very next day, he asked me out again.Adrian continued, “The third time, I wanted to see her.“The fourth time too.“And every time after that.”He looked at Vivian.“Don’t reduce six years of someone else’s life to the fact that she happens to look like you.”The floating comments seemed to crash completely. For a long time, nothing appeared.Then:[…][Wait. What exactly have we been shipping this whole time?][Hold on. So who was actually the substitute here?]I didn’t feel any sense of victory.I was just tired.“Adrian.”His eyes immediately turned to me.“Don’t argue in the hospital.”He paused.“Okay.”Vivian opened her mouth as if she wanted to say something else, but eighteen-year-old Adrian had already removed her hand from his arm.“I told you yesterday not to use someone’s life to force her into anything.”For the first time, the reckless defiance was gone from his young face.“You lied to me.”Vivian went pale.“Adrian, I did it all for—

There was also a message underneath.[Mr. Pierce, since the patient’s family has changed the treatment plan, we’ll cancel our trip for now. Please contact us anytime if you need us later.]The message had been marked as read.Eighteen-year-old Adrian stared at it.“I never saw this.”Vivian’s face went completely white.Adrian handed the phone back to his younger self.“She’s the one you chose.”His voice was calm.“See for yourself.”Eighteen-year-old Adrian looked at Vivian as if he were seeing her for the first time.“Why?”Tears immediately spilled down Vivian’s cheeks.“What else was I supposed to do?“You’re already married. I have nothing.“Anna gets to be Mrs. Pierce. She gets your house, your company, and now your mother even gave her the bracelet.“I waited for you all these years. You finally chose me again, and all I wanted was to take back what should’ve been mine in the first place.”Eighteen-year-old Adrian stared at her.Vivian reached for his hand.“
