Chapter 4

Author: Binky Babe
Wednesday was my mother-in-law’s birthday dinner.

I arrived at the hotel early to help her go over the guest list.

Just before dinner was about to begin, the entrance suddenly went quiet.

I followed everyone’s gaze.

Adrian had arrived.

Vivian was on his arm, wearing a pale silver-blue gown.

A brilliant pink diamond gleamed at her throat.

Someone behind me lowered their voice.

“Isn’t that the pink diamond from the auction a few days ago? The one Mr. Pierce paid a fortune for?”

“I thought it was for Mrs. Pierce.”

“Everyone did. Adrian Pierce is famous for spoiling his wife. Who else would he buy it for besides Anna Shaw?”

“Then the woman wearing it is...”

No one finished the sentence.

That was how I found out the outside world had assumed Adrian bought the diamond for me.

Eyes turned toward me from every direction.

The awkwardness was mixed with pity.

My mother-in-law’s expression darkened immediately.

She walked over, but her eyes stayed fixed on Vivian.

“Adrian, why didn’t you tell me you were bringing a guest?”

“The seating arrangements were finalized days ago. There aren’t any extra seats.”

Vivian immediately released Adrian’s arm.

“I’m sorry, Mrs. Pierce. This is my fault.”

Her eyes reddened as she looked at Adrian.

“I should probably leave. I don’t want to ruin your mother’s birthday because of me.”

Adrian grabbed her before she could move.

“It’s one extra chair. Is it really that big a deal?”

My mother-in-law gave a cold laugh and beckoned to the butler.

A few minutes later, he really did bring over another chair.

It was old wood, with a patch of paint chipped off the back.

Surrounded by an entire ballroom of elegant upholstered chairs, it couldn’t have stood out more.

“Ms. Young, I’m afraid this will have to do.”

The room went silent.

Every trace of color drained from Vivian’s face.

Adrian understood the insult too.

His face turned livid.

He grabbed Vivian and walked out.

My mother-in-law was so furious that her hands were trembling.

I went over and supported her.

After the dinner ended, I accompanied her back to the Pierce family home.

We had been driving for quite a while before she finally spoke.

“Vivian was Adrian’s first love.

“The first time I met that girl, I knew she was trouble.

“But Adrian was at that age where once he set his heart on someone, no one could talk him out of it.”

After high school, my mother-in-law had planned to send Adrian overseas for college.

Vivian panicked.

She set Adrian up, hoping to put him in a situation where he would be forced to take responsibility for her.

But my mother-in-law had already been suspicious.

She produced the security footage in front of everyone.

That was when Adrian finally realized Vivian had been manipulating him.

Not long afterward, he went overseas.

I stared out the car window.

Strangely, I felt calm.

My mother-in-law gave my hand a gentle squeeze.

When we reached the house, she opened her safe and took out an antique heirloom bracelet.

“This belongs to the daughter-in-law of the Pierce family.”

She slipped it onto my wrist herself.

“I should’ve given it to you years ago.”

“Consider this Mom making up for lost time.”

The floating comments instantly exploded.

[Why does SHE get it?! Vivian lost ten years with her boyfriend because of this woman, and now the family bracelet that should’ve been hers is going to the substitute too?]

[Hahaha, she actually accepted it! Looking like Vivian was one thing, but does she seriously think that makes her the real Mrs. Pierce?]

[Just wait until Older Adrian comes back. The first thing he’ll do is take that bracelet off her wrist himself and give it back to Vivian!]

I ran my fingers over the cool bracelet.

Three more days.

I had barely gotten into the car for the ride home when Grandma’s caregiver called.

“Ms. Shaw, your grandmother suddenly collapsed! They’ve rushed her to the hospital!”

By the time I reached the hospital, Grandma’s condition had temporarily stabilized.

But the doctor told me she needed surgery as soon as possible.

“Our team isn’t confident we can handle a case this complicated.

“Your best option is to contact Dr. Wilson and the team who operated on her three years ago.”

Only then did I realize I didn’t even have Dr. Wilson’s contact information.

Three years ago, Adrian had handled everything.

He had found the doctors.

He had arranged the surgery.

All I had done was stay beside Grandma.

I immediately went back to the house.

Adrian and Vivian were sitting in the living room watching TV.

“Grandma needs emergency heart surgery.”

I walked straight up to him.

“I need you to use Adrian Pierce’s identity and contact Dr. Wilson’s team, the doctors who operated on her three years ago.”

Adrian froze for a second.

Then he immediately pulled out his phone.

“What’s his full name?”

“Dr. Wilson. That’s all I remember.”

He opened his contacts while I stood beside him and explained Grandma’s condition.

During my first week back, a client asked me a question in a meeting that I couldn’t answer. That night, I stood under the hot water in the shower and suddenly wanted to call Adrian. In the past, all I had to do was ask.Within half an hour, he probably would’ve had every relevant document sent to me, along with a list of exactly who I needed to contact.I picked up my phone. Then I put it back down. The next day, I reached out to three former colleagues and took them out to dinner. The problem still got solved. Not as quickly as Adrian would’ve solved it.But it wasn’t nearly as difficult as I had imagined either. As time went on, the thought of calling Adrian came to me less and less.It wasn’t because I didn’t need him.I was simply starting to remember that I used to know how to solve my own problems too. When the West District deal was finally closed, Caleb called me.“Ms. Shaw, the other side finally came down another two percent.”I laughed.“You don’t have to ca

“At the company, all the access and authority were in your hands. At home, it was the same.“You arranged the drivers. The legal team worked for you. Even when Grandma had surgery three years ago, I didn’t know which doctors you contacted or how you got them here.“I used to think that was a good thing.“You took care of everything for me, and all I had to do was live my life without worrying about anything.”I looked up at him.“But that day, when I couldn’t even get through my own front door, I realized something.“If you weren’t there, I didn’t even know where I stood anymore.”Adrian’s throat moved.“It was my—”“It wasn’t your fault.”I cut him off.“And loving me the way you did wasn’t wrong either.“I was the one who handed over too much of my life.”I zipped up my suitcase.“So now I want some of it back.”Adrian looked at me for a long time.“Including our marriage?”My hand stilled. It was the first time since he came back that he had asked me so directly.

“The divorce was never legally finalized.”The attorney continued, “And several provisions in the agreement attempt to dispose of marital assets.”“We’ll handle everything from here.”Adrian nodded.“Recover whatever needs to be recovered.”Then he added,“Don’t touch anything in Anna’s name or anything she owned before the marriage.”The attorney paused.“Of course.”Adrian’s expression remained grim.“I’m reminding myself.”Caleb immediately lowered his head, trying to hide his reaction.I almost laughed. Then I decided laughing probably wasn’t appropriate and turned my face away instead.Adrian noticed. For the first time in days, some of the tension left his expression. The last issue was the pink diamond.Vivian refused to return it.She insisted Adrian had personally given it to her.Technically, eighteen-year-old Adrian had. After hearing that, Adrian only asked the attorney one question.“Which account paid for it?”“The family office account.”“Then hand

And yet the very next day, he asked me out again.Adrian continued, “The third time, I wanted to see her.“The fourth time too.“And every time after that.”He looked at Vivian.“Don’t reduce six years of someone else’s life to the fact that she happens to look like you.”The floating comments seemed to crash completely. For a long time, nothing appeared.Then:[…][Wait. What exactly have we been shipping this whole time?][Hold on. So who was actually the substitute here?]I didn’t feel any sense of victory.I was just tired.“Adrian.”His eyes immediately turned to me.“Don’t argue in the hospital.”He paused.“Okay.”Vivian opened her mouth as if she wanted to say something else, but eighteen-year-old Adrian had already removed her hand from his arm.“I told you yesterday not to use someone’s life to force her into anything.”For the first time, the reckless defiance was gone from his young face.“You lied to me.”Vivian went pale.“Adrian, I did it all for—

There was also a message underneath.[Mr. Pierce, since the patient’s family has changed the treatment plan, we’ll cancel our trip for now. Please contact us anytime if you need us later.]The message had been marked as read.Eighteen-year-old Adrian stared at it.“I never saw this.”Vivian’s face went completely white.Adrian handed the phone back to his younger self.“She’s the one you chose.”His voice was calm.“See for yourself.”Eighteen-year-old Adrian looked at Vivian as if he were seeing her for the first time.“Why?”Tears immediately spilled down Vivian’s cheeks.“What else was I supposed to do?“You’re already married. I have nothing.“Anna gets to be Mrs. Pierce. She gets your house, your company, and now your mother even gave her the bracelet.“I waited for you all these years. You finally chose me again, and all I wanted was to take back what should’ve been mine in the first place.”Eighteen-year-old Adrian stared at her.Vivian reached for his hand.“
