Chapter 3

Author: Justin Wolf
After that incident that night at the bar, Jason completely vanished from my life.

The malice that surrounded me flared up once more, getting worse by the day. The neighbors who used to bully us continued dumping trash and spitting in front of our door.

Someone even splashed our door with paint while hurling slurs at me.

One night, on my way back home, a group of people dragged me into a dark alley and started beating me up.

Their punches and kicks rained down on me. After having their way, they spat on my face and yelled, "Like brother, like sister. Neither of you is good."

Under the dim streetlight, I crouched on the ground, clutching my head and sobbing uncontrollably.

One of them suddenly reached out and jerked at my clothes.

I was terrified.

While struggling, I accidentally slammed into a protruding stone in the wall. Blood streamed down my face.

At my most panicked and helpless moment, I never expected Jason to appear.

He walked over and towered over me condescendingly. I could not see his expression, but his tone was icy.

"Christine, you must be having a hard time recently, right? If you need someone to blame, blame it on your brother. You're suffering in his place."

I did not look up. My heart was crushed so badly that I could not breathe.

Raucous laughter rang around me once more, but Jason interrupted them, saying to me, "Christine, I will make you live in fear, just like this. I will make your brother, who's rotting in prison, understand that he owes Lisa. Forever."

Then, he left without looking back. The men who had tried to violate me left with him as well.

That night, I returned home in a daze. When I saw a pair of clay dolls on the table, tears instantly streamed down my face.

Jason and I had made those dolls in an arts and crafts store when we were still in love. He made me one, and I made him one.

I initially thought of placing our dolls in each other's homes as proof of our beautiful love, but Jason said he did not want to be away from me, so naturally, the dolls had to be together.

He placed both dolls in the most visible spot in my home.

He even said he hoped we could get married sooner, spending every morning and evening together.

Those vows still echoed in my ears.

Too bad the man that I loved had completely changed. Just when I was engrossed in my memories, my phone suddenly rang.

It was a call from my best friend, Jenny Swinton.

She sounded a little hesitant, but in the end, she asked, "Christine, did you see what's going viral on the Internet?"

I searched on social media and immediately saw the photos of me in various states of undress.

The photos that Jason took of me at the bar the other night.

It came with a caption.

[The brother's a criminal, and the sister's not any better.]

More than 10,000 people had liked the post and reposted it with countless comments.

[Girls these days no longer have any self-respect, messing around everywhere.]

[Well, we all know that she's selling her body for fast cash.]

[Look at her figure. She's not bad. I would like to have a go at her, too.]

The overwhelming tide of abuse left my mind completely blank. The world spun before my eyes, and I could no longer stand. I slumped to the floor.

'Jason Chase, how cruel you are.'

Just like those scandalous photos of me back then, the video created a huge buzz once it was uploaded online.A torrent of comments came.[After all this time, it turns out that this woman is the most vicious one? She framed someone for rape. How shameless!][Send her to the police! Arrest her! Let the law teach her a lesson!][The injured woman was the one who was bullied online previously, right? Looks like there must be something more behind this entire incident.]Someone even stood up for me.[The injured woman is a good lady! She was forced to take those photos.][She was falsely blamed. She must have suffered a lot.]However, I no longer cared about the comments online. I switched off my phone.Jenny sat next to me and told me that Jason had found a lawyer. With the evidence, Charlie could be released soon. The day finally came. How wonderful! The day Charlie was released, I went against the doctor's advice and got myself discharged from the hospital.I wanted to be t

Jenny told me that Jason would visit me daily. When he saw me sleeping, he would sit by my side and look at me for a very long time.Actually, I knew he was there. I was not always asleep. However, I did not want to see him anymore. While waiting to be discharged from the hospital, I never thought that I would see her again.Lisa found my room. When she came by, Jason was not around. When Jenny saw her, she threw the pillow at her and yelled, "You shameless witch! How dare you come see us! As if you haven't caused enough pain!"Lisa was not angry at all. She merely smirked. She walked over and sized me up, saying icily, "Oh, it's you. It's been a while, huh?"I was furious when I saw her. It was because of her that Charlie was in prison. I immediately asked her to leave."You framed my brother and put him in prison. Leave. I don't want to see you."Her face suddenly twisted. She looked vicious and arrogant as she sneered at me, saying, "Yes, I framed your brother, so what? Yo

Jason called Lisa from outside my room. His tone shifted from calm questioning to furious shouting. In the end, he was silent. When he entered, I closed my eyes, pretending that I was asleep. He bent down to tuck me in when a teardrop dripped onto my face.A moment later, with a catch in his throat, he said, "Why didn't you tell me the truth about Lisa? I could have…"I was trembling under the sheets, slowly clenching my fists. He seemed to have forgotten that after he took those humiliating photos of me, when he was about to leave, I had hugged his leg tightly, crying and begging him to let me explain.Back then, he had merely kicked me aside and, with gritted teeth, said, "No need! What explanation could someone like you possibly give?"He did not give me a chance to explain myself. He loved Lisa so much that even if he had heard the truth, he would not have believed me.Then, I replied, "No need. I don't need you…"Jason was stunned. With a bitter smile, he said, "But Chri

Jason was unhappy. He retorted, saying, "I never thought of using Christine to get Lisa back. I only wanted Christine to suffer a little, to make her brother regret it. After all, it was Charlie who had caused Lisa to suffer."I heard a loud slap.Jenny yelled even louder, "You don't know anything! Don't pretend that you do! Why don't you ask your lover what really happened back then?"What truly happened?I looked out the window at the dark skies and sank into my memories. That day, Charlie returned home from work a little later than usual. He explained that he had met a drunk girl by the side of the road. He was worried for her, so he took her to the hospital. He did not expect that trouble would come after him like that. That girl was Lisa. Not long after, Lisa accused Charlie of assaulting her and making her pregnant. I did not know where they found the evidence, but Charlie ended up in prison.I looked at Charlie in confusion, but he shook his head at me, saying that he

The doctor sighed and said, "If she doesn't want to wake up, even the best medicines won't help."Jason was displeased. He swore and said, "You're just giving excuses for your incapabilities! I want a different doctor! I'm going to change to a different hospital!"The emergency room quickly descended into chaos. I heard the sounds of smashing, arguing, and voices tangled together.Jason had caused a huge scene. A long time later, he finally bent down next to me on the bed. With a choke in his voice, he said, "Christine, let's go to a different hospital and try again. You’ll surely pull through."He sounded like he was possessed. When the doctor was not around, he picked me up, about to leave.Right at that moment, Jenny arrived. The moment Jenny saw him, she yelled, "Stop with your act! You were the one who caused all this! It was all your fault for posting those photos! You were the one who forced Christine into despair!"Jason did not get mad at all. As if consoling himself,

I could not change the past. However, at that moment, I finally had a chance to choose.Jason was yelling at me through the phone. I had never seen him so angry before. Even if it was that night at the bar, he only sounded icy, like he could not be bothered.Even so, I no longer wanted anything to do with him.I placed my phone down and looked at the bridge calmly. Then, with a smile, I jumped. All those grudges, all those nasty comments. They no longer had anything to do with me.Perhaps it was for the best.My body grew heavier and heavier. My head throbbed as if it were about to split open. This must be what dying felt like. The beautiful memories I had with Jason flashed across my mind like the stars in the night sky.I could not help but reach out to grab it, only to find myself sinking into a memory.Back then, Jason and I were still very much in love.
