Chapter 1

I watched Jax take the keys to that car from his friend.

And it hit me.

Today was just another bet. Another chance to watch me make a fool of myself.

The ones who lost the bet shot me dirty looks after they were done laughing.

“Clara, you have any idea I lost five grand on you? You really think that desperate, broke-ass look is good enough for a wedding dress?”

“We told you a thousand times, Jax is out of your league. You really think a guy from his circle would marry you?”

“Hasn’t he screwed you over like, ten times? You’re like a stray dog with no pride. If Jax spit on the ground, you’d probably lick it clean.”

I bit my lip so hard I could taste blood. My nails dug into my palms.

Jax pocketed the keys and walked over. He pinched the back of my neck, his go-to move. Like calming down a fussy pet. His voice was fake-pity.

“What’s wrong, Clara? Upset again? You know I hate it when you cry.”

He turned to his friends. “Hey, you assholes. It’s Clara’s birthday. Don’t be mean to the birthday girl.”

For a second, I thought he’d grown a conscience.

Then he pulled a crumpled bill from his wallet and shoved it into my hand.

He grinned. “Thanks for helping me win the car, Clara. Here’s twenty bucks. Go get an iced Americano from the Starbucks on the corner. Snap out of your delusions. Be good. Think of it as my birthday gift.”

They all laughed again.

“You’re too nice, Jax! Careful she doesn’t go full psycho-stalker on you. She’ll be camping outside your apartment building.”

“Didn’t you see the dress? She’s trying to lock him down. Thinks if she hangs on long enough, Jax will take pity on her and finally propose!”

The old me would have been sobbing by now. Begging Jax to have a heart, to stop hurting me.

But this time, I took the twenty dollars from his hand.

“Thanks. The marriage license at Cook County is sixty bucks. This can be your contribution.”

Jax froze. His brow twitched. Then he burst out laughing.

“Clara, have you completely lost it? Still thinking about marrying me?”

“Can’t you take a hint? I was messing with you. Even if you can’t live without me, you need to know your place. Aren’t we good just like this?”

“I’ve seen people with no self-respect, but you take the cake. Stop throwing a tantrum. It doesn’t work on me.”

He shook his head, disgusted. So sure I’d never leave him.

I thought I was prepared. But his words were like arrows, piercing what was left of my heart.

I already knew about the bet.

He’d called me last night.

His voice was unusually gentle. “Clara. City Hall, 9 AM tomorrow. I have a big birthday surprise for you.”

“Oh, and dress up. Wear that wedding dress you designed. And bring your ID. See you there.”

After he hung up, my heart pounded.

I had just posted about my final project, a collection of wedding dress designs.

Did he see it? Did he decide to marry me?

But a few minutes later, someone sent me a video.

In it, Jax was showing my post to his friends.

“What the hell is this?”

Someone immediately chimed in. “So desperate. She’s probably freaking out because she’s graduating with no job. Trying to trap Jax into buying a ring.”

“I bet she’s just jealous Jax has a new girlfriend. Posting this crap for attention.”

Jax’s new girlfriend was Chloe.

A true blue-blood from Chicago’s high society. Jax treated her like a princess.

Jax stared at my photo on the screen. For a moment, his expression was complicated. Then he just shook his head. “God, desperate women are impossible to get rid of. But what can I say? Her world revolves around me.”

“Tell you what. I’ll make a bet with you guys. One phone call, and I guarantee she’ll show up at City Hall tomorrow in that wedding dress. Wanna see a clown in a wedding gown?”

Someone laughed. “What happens if you lose, Jax? Make Chloe do a dance for us?”

The laughter died before it started. Jax’s fist slammed into the guy’s face. Blood gushed from his nose.

Jax’s face was dark. A beast whose territory had been invaded. “You want to die? Is that it? Who the hell do you think you are, saying Chloe’s name?”

Chloe was his princess. Off-limits. Not even a joke.

And I was the clown in his bet. Something to be trampled on.

The video ended. My heart ached.

Tears fell onto my phone screen, blurring the image of his laughing face.

I wiped my eyes. Wiped the screen. I stared at his face.

This was the boy I’d loved for ten years. My childhood friend.

He knew exactly how much I loved him.

Which meant he knew exactly how to hurt me the most.

He’d forgotten his promise. The one he made when we were young.

“Clara, if you’re not married by thirty, I’ll marry you.”

Today, I turn thirty.

And I’m getting married.

I just didn’t tell Jax he wasn't the groom.

After they dragged Jax out, the ballroom was dead silent for a full ten seconds. His desperate cries faded behind the heavy doors. You could have heard a pin drop.I thought the whole drama would have embarrassed Alessandro. But he wasn’t angry at all. In fact, he pulled me closer. He led me to my parents, his composure perfect. He poured two glasses of champagne and, with flawless etiquette, toasted them. His Italian was fluent, his humor disarming. In just a few sentences, he not only calmed my parents down but had them laughing. The party’s mood shifted, becoming warm and romantic again. My mother stood up, her eyes still a little red, and pointed at Alessandro. “This one! If you had told me you were the real son-in-law from the start, you would have saved my old heart a lot of stress!”My father clapped him on the shoulder, hard enough to show how thrilled he was. “Young man, you treat my daughter right. Or I'll come after you myself.”For the first time, Alessandro looked a little

Jax hit the carpet hard. He was still shaking, but he forced himself up, crawling on his knees back toward me.He reached my feet and wrapped his arms around my legs, holding on for dear life.“Clara, don’t go. Please, just listen to me,” he begged, looking up. His face was a swollen, red mess.I tried to pull my leg away, but he held on tighter.“In college,” he choked out, his voice breaking, “I never liked Chloe. I swear to God. Not for a single day.”The whole room was silent. Even Chloe was frozen, staring in disbelief.“Then why—” I started.“BECAUSE YOU WERE TOO PERFECT!” he screamed, a dam of repressed feelings bursting wide open. “You were good at everything. You were amazing. I wasn’t good enough for you. I was scared you’d realize what a loser I was and leave me!”“So I found Chloe on purpose,” he sobbed, his voice trembling like a leaf. “I wanted to see if you’d still love me. I made bets with my friends… bets on whether you’d get jealous, on whether you’d wait for me forev

The moment we reached the hotel entrance, two rows of men in black suits bowed in perfect unison.“Welcome back, Mr. Vitale.”The hotel manager rushed forward, a line of staff with party poppers behind him. He was beaming.“Happy birthday, and congratulations on your wedding!”POP!The poppers went off, showering the ground in gold confetti.I stood frozen. Before I could process it, two waiters pulled open the grand doors to the ballroom.A spotlight hit me, square in the face. The room was filled with guests. And in the front row, my parents were smiling at me.My mother was wearing the silk dress I’d bought her, her eyes a little misty. My father’s hand was on her shoulder. They were looking at me with a pride I’d never seen before.Behind them, a massive LED screen displayed two names on a loop.Clara Bennett & Alessandro Vitale.Jax stopped dead in his tracks.“What… what is…” he stammered. My mother looked over at him, her eyes cold. Her voice dripped with scorn.“Isn’t that Jax?

The bulletproof Rolls-Royce glided to a stop at the end of the red carpet.Outside, Jax, Chloe, and their whole crew were waiting by the hotel entrance. They stood with their arms crossed, smirks on their faces. Waiting for the show to end.Chloe saw me through the window and slowly shook her head. A look of pity and disappointment. As if to say, Why are you dragging this out?I stared at her face. My palms were sweating. My legs felt like lead. I couldn’t move.“What is it?” Alessandro noticed my hesitation.“I…” I opened my mouth, but I couldn’t explain. He didn’t wait for an answer. He just pulled me into his arms. The warmth of his chest seeped through his shirt. His chin rested on the top of my head, his voice a low rumble against my ear.“From now on, your world belongs to me.”The words sent a jolt down my spine.I closed my eyes, and the memory of my 20th birthday flooded back.Jax had thrown a huge party. All our friends were there, chanting for him to give me my present. He p

My palms were sweating as I walked back down with the certificate.Alessandro was waiting at the bottom of the stairs. When he saw me, he pulled off his black leather gloves with a deliberate, formal motion. He reached up, his warm palm cupping the back of my neck. The touch was so light, but it made me freeze.“Your veil is crooked,” he said softly. His fingers gently straightened the edge of the tulle. Then he took a wipe from his pocket, bent down, and cleaned the coffee stain from the hem of my dress. “I’m sorry you had to stand in this for so long.”His voice was deep, laced with an apology I’d never heard from anyone before.“I should be thanking you,” I whispered, my throat tight. He looked up at me, then held out his hand. “Come on, my wife.”I stared at his hand for a second before placing mine in it.His fingers tightened around mine. He leaned in close, his voice a low whisper in my ear. “Say my name.”My face burned. I turned away, mumbling a soft “Alessandro.”“Can’t hear

The clerk’s stamp came down hard on the marriage certificate.“Congratulations,” she said, pushing it toward me.I stared at the paper. Two names, side by side.Clara Bennett. Alessandro Vitale. The photographer moved in close. “Okay, newlyweds, a little closer. Give me a smile.”Alessandro’s hand rested on my waist. Very light. The shutter clicked. My mind was still empty. It felt like someone had scooped me out, leaving an empty shell to pose for pictures.“I need the restroom,” I said quietly. He nodded, no questions asked. “I’ll wait here.”Clutching the certificate, I practically fled to the second floor. At the end of the hall, there was a large window overlooking the main lobby.I leaned against it, catching my breath. Then I heard a familiar voice from below. It was Jax.He had a cigarette dangling from his lips, surrounded by his friends. “I’m telling you, the guy’s an actor,” he said, blowing out a cloud of smoke. He sounded so sure of himself. “Clara hired him. She’s just pu
