Chapter 2

Autor: Cocojam
The wedding dress was ankle-length. My fiancé and I picked it out together.

I lifted the skirt, walking past Jax and toward City Hall.

He grabbed my wrist. Hard. His grip felt like it could shatter the bone.

He lowered his voice. A raw edge of panic in it. “Clara, have you had enough? You really think I won’t lose my shit?”

“If you’re so desperate for a wedding, go inside and grab some bum off the street. Do me a favor. Then you can stop harassing me.”

I looked at his face. I didn’t even have the energy to be angry.

Just disappointed. Sad.

The boy who used to get into fights if someone said one bad word about me was gone.

I shook my head, trying to pull my hand back. But suddenly, Chloe was there.

“Jax!” she called out.

He let go of me instantly. Like he’d been burned.

He was terrified she’d think he still had feelings for me. To prove his loyalty, he pulled a sanitizing wipe from his pocket and scrubbed the hand that had touched me.

Like I was something filthy.

Chloe clicked over in her Louboutins. “Jax, what are you doing here?”

“Clara, are you getting married today? You’re even in a wedding dress! Oh my god, I thought it was Halloween.”

Jax glanced around nervously. He couldn’t even admit he’d used me for a bet.

In a panic, he grabbed one of his lackeys, shoved him roughly toward me, and laughed. “You guessed it, Chloe! Today’s the big day for Clara and Mickey!”

“We’re all here to celebrate with them.”

His friends all jumped in.

“Yeah, yeah, Chloe! It’s Clara and Mickey’s big day! We’re just here to wish them well!”

I looked at Mickey. Shorter than me, reeking of booze, a stupid grin on his face. I felt sick.

Jax saw Chloe still looked skeptical. He started pushing me and Mickey toward the entrance.

“Hurry, hurry! Go get your license! Chloe’s watching!”

He pushed me so hard I stumbled. Mickey, now feeling bold, grabbed my hand. His other hand snaked around my waist, slithering up my back.

His foul, boozy breath hit my neck. “Clara,” he whispered, “Jax doesn’t want you anyway. How about a quickie in the bathroom? You look like you’re dying for it…”

Jax saw Mickey’s hand on my waist. His face darkened. He took half a step forward, like he was about to kick the guy away.

But then he glanced at Chloe. And he stopped. He covered his anger with more mockery, his voice dripping with scorn.

I couldn’t take it anymore. My stomach churned. I raised my hand.

CRACK.

The slap echoed. I brought my knee up hard into his gut.

Mickey screamed, clutching his stomach as he stumbled back, nearly falling on his ass.

I wasn’t done. I grabbed a heavy brochure from a nearby stand and slammed it into his face.

“Get the hell away from me! Don’t you ever touch me with your filthy hands!”

Jax watched me explode. He wasn’t angry. He looked smug.

He raised his voice, making a show of it. “Wow, Clara. I know you want to save yourself for me, but you don’t have to get violent. Who else would put up with a psycho like you?”

“Mickey, you got balls, man! Trying to mess with a crazy bitch like her!”

Chloe beamed, adding her own fake congratulations.

“Clara, I used to worry about you. I’m so happy you’ve found a husband and are starting a family! Congratulations! I know Mickey’s reputation isn’t the best, but at least it’s something.”

I just stared at Jax, who was still laughing.

My voice was cold. “You’re right. I am getting married. But not to any of you lowlifes. My fiancé is inside handling the paperwork right now. Save your congratulations for later.”

Jax’s smile froze on his face.

He stared into my calm eyes. For a second, his heart skipped a beat. But then it turned into a cold, dismissive sneer.

After they dragged Jax out, the ballroom was dead silent for a full ten seconds. His desperate cries faded behind the heavy doors. You could have heard a pin drop.I thought the whole drama would have embarrassed Alessandro. But he wasn’t angry at all. In fact, he pulled me closer. He led me to my parents, his composure perfect. He poured two glasses of champagne and, with flawless etiquette, toasted them. His Italian was fluent, his humor disarming. In just a few sentences, he not only calmed my parents down but had them laughing. The party’s mood shifted, becoming warm and romantic again. My mother stood up, her eyes still a little red, and pointed at Alessandro. “This one! If you had told me you were the real son-in-law from the start, you would have saved my old heart a lot of stress!”My father clapped him on the shoulder, hard enough to show how thrilled he was. “Young man, you treat my daughter right. Or I'll come after you myself.”For the first time, Alessandro looked a little

Jax hit the carpet hard. He was still shaking, but he forced himself up, crawling on his knees back toward me.He reached my feet and wrapped his arms around my legs, holding on for dear life.“Clara, don’t go. Please, just listen to me,” he begged, looking up. His face was a swollen, red mess.I tried to pull my leg away, but he held on tighter.“In college,” he choked out, his voice breaking, “I never liked Chloe. I swear to God. Not for a single day.”The whole room was silent. Even Chloe was frozen, staring in disbelief.“Then why—” I started.“BECAUSE YOU WERE TOO PERFECT!” he screamed, a dam of repressed feelings bursting wide open. “You were good at everything. You were amazing. I wasn’t good enough for you. I was scared you’d realize what a loser I was and leave me!”“So I found Chloe on purpose,” he sobbed, his voice trembling like a leaf. “I wanted to see if you’d still love me. I made bets with my friends… bets on whether you’d get jealous, on whether you’d wait for me forev

The moment we reached the hotel entrance, two rows of men in black suits bowed in perfect unison.“Welcome back, Mr. Vitale.”The hotel manager rushed forward, a line of staff with party poppers behind him. He was beaming.“Happy birthday, and congratulations on your wedding!”POP!The poppers went off, showering the ground in gold confetti.I stood frozen. Before I could process it, two waiters pulled open the grand doors to the ballroom.A spotlight hit me, square in the face. The room was filled with guests. And in the front row, my parents were smiling at me.My mother was wearing the silk dress I’d bought her, her eyes a little misty. My father’s hand was on her shoulder. They were looking at me with a pride I’d never seen before.Behind them, a massive LED screen displayed two names on a loop.Clara Bennett & Alessandro Vitale.Jax stopped dead in his tracks.“What… what is…” he stammered. My mother looked over at him, her eyes cold. Her voice dripped with scorn.“Isn’t that Jax?

The bulletproof Rolls-Royce glided to a stop at the end of the red carpet.Outside, Jax, Chloe, and their whole crew were waiting by the hotel entrance. They stood with their arms crossed, smirks on their faces. Waiting for the show to end.Chloe saw me through the window and slowly shook her head. A look of pity and disappointment. As if to say, Why are you dragging this out?I stared at her face. My palms were sweating. My legs felt like lead. I couldn’t move.“What is it?” Alessandro noticed my hesitation.“I…” I opened my mouth, but I couldn’t explain. He didn’t wait for an answer. He just pulled me into his arms. The warmth of his chest seeped through his shirt. His chin rested on the top of my head, his voice a low rumble against my ear.“From now on, your world belongs to me.”The words sent a jolt down my spine.I closed my eyes, and the memory of my 20th birthday flooded back.Jax had thrown a huge party. All our friends were there, chanting for him to give me my present. He p

My palms were sweating as I walked back down with the certificate.Alessandro was waiting at the bottom of the stairs. When he saw me, he pulled off his black leather gloves with a deliberate, formal motion. He reached up, his warm palm cupping the back of my neck. The touch was so light, but it made me freeze.“Your veil is crooked,” he said softly. His fingers gently straightened the edge of the tulle. Then he took a wipe from his pocket, bent down, and cleaned the coffee stain from the hem of my dress. “I’m sorry you had to stand in this for so long.”His voice was deep, laced with an apology I’d never heard from anyone before.“I should be thanking you,” I whispered, my throat tight. He looked up at me, then held out his hand. “Come on, my wife.”I stared at his hand for a second before placing mine in it.His fingers tightened around mine. He leaned in close, his voice a low whisper in my ear. “Say my name.”My face burned. I turned away, mumbling a soft “Alessandro.”“Can’t hear

The clerk’s stamp came down hard on the marriage certificate.“Congratulations,” she said, pushing it toward me.I stared at the paper. Two names, side by side.Clara Bennett. Alessandro Vitale. The photographer moved in close. “Okay, newlyweds, a little closer. Give me a smile.”Alessandro’s hand rested on my waist. Very light. The shutter clicked. My mind was still empty. It felt like someone had scooped me out, leaving an empty shell to pose for pictures.“I need the restroom,” I said quietly. He nodded, no questions asked. “I’ll wait here.”Clutching the certificate, I practically fled to the second floor. At the end of the hall, there was a large window overlooking the main lobby.I leaned against it, catching my breath. Then I heard a familiar voice from below. It was Jax.He had a cigarette dangling from his lips, surrounded by his friends. “I’m telling you, the guy’s an actor,” he said, blowing out a cloud of smoke. He sounded so sure of himself. “Clara hired him. She’s just pu
