Chapter 2

Author: Freya
“Miss De Luca, are you happy with this gown?” the attendant asked expectantly as she adjusted the dress around me. “It was designed by William, an Italian designer, and there’s only one like it in the world.”

I looked at myself in the mirror and thought of all the times I had imagined standing beside Enzo in a wedding dress, exchanging vows with him in front of the priest.

Now, it all seemed foolish.

“Cancel the order.”

The attendant froze. “What?”

“I’m not taking this gown. Please cancel the order.”

“But... this is a one-of-a-kind gown. If you give it up, someone else will probably reserve it very soon. Are you sure you don’t want it?”

“Yes, I’m sure.” I took off the wedding dress and handed it back to her. “Thank you.”

The attendant stood there holding the gown, disappointment written all over her face.

I put on my coat, picked up my bag, and walked out of the bridal boutique without looking back.

I found a café nearby, sat down, and booked a flight out of the country. The confirmation arrived on my phone soon afterward.

The flight was scheduled for three days later, on the day of the wedding.

That worked perfectly. I had plenty of time to pack my things and say goodbye to everything here.

I took a deep breath and felt some of the tension leave my body.

I would not be showing up at the wedding three days from now, because this time, I was done waiting.

When I returned to the estate, I went straight to the bedroom.

The room was quiet, and Enzo was probably still with Emily.

I opened the wardrobe, took down a suitcase from the top shelf, and began packing my clothes.

By the time Enzo pushed open the door, I had just finished packing.

“You’re back.” He took off his coat and looked at the suitcase on the floor. “What are you doing?”

“Just clearing out some old clothes.”

I gave him a casual answer as I closed the suitcase, pushed it into the wardrobe, and covered it with several coats.

“Did you find a wedding dress you liked today?”

“No.”

“Oh...” Enzo fell silent for a moment before speaking again, this time with a hint of caution in his voice. “Linda, I made a few changes to the wedding.”

I turned to look at him.

“We were originally going to have it in Sardinia, but Emily said she thought it would be safer to hold it here at the estate. Most of the family will already be here, so if anything happens, we’ll be able to deal with it immediately. I thought she had a point, so I changed the venue.”

Sardinia was where Enzo and I had met seven years ago, and he had once promised that one day, he would give me the grandest wedding there. He knew perfectly well how much that place meant to me.

When we first started planning the wedding, Sardinia had been the very first thing I decided on, and no matter how many times the rest of the arrangements changed afterward, the location had always remained the same.

Yet all it took was Emily saying she would “feel safer at the estate” for Enzo to change it.

“That’s fine. We’ll do it your way,” I said.

Enzo looked surprised, as though he had not expected me to agree so quickly.

“You’re... not angry?”

“No.” I closed the wardrobe door without looking at him. “You’re right. The estate is safer.”

Enzo let out a relieved breath.

“Linda, thank you. You really do understand me better than anyone. Emily has been in a terrible state lately, and with the wedding preparations on top of everything else, I’ve been exhausted.”

Then he seemed to remember something.

“Oh, right. There’s one more thing.”

I stopped what I was doing and turned back to him.

“I canceled the part where Buddy brings us the rings.”

Buddy was a golden retriever I had brought with me from the De Luca family.

We had grown up together, and after all the years he had spent by my side, he had long since become part of my family.

Three years later, under my leadership, the De Luca family had become the most prominent arms dealer in all of Europe.De Luca warehouses and docks could be found at nearly every major port.My life had settled into a peaceful routine. I woke early each morning to deal with paperwork, spent my afternoons checking on the docks or warehouses, and came home in the evenings to read or listen to music, occasionally meeting a business partner for dinner.Of course, there was also a new Don in my life, and that was Caspian.I had already moved on to a completely different life.News about Enzo still reached me from time to time, although I never asked about him myself. I would only hear bits and pieces when my lieutenants happened to mention him over dinner. They said Enzo had begun making mistake after mistake in his decisions for the Falcone family. First, he lost two major arms clients, and then someone outmaneuvered him during an acquisition deal, costing him a considerable amount of mone

After returning to the De Luca family, I stopped asking about Enzo and devoted all my attention to the family business. The first thing I did was go through the family accounts from beginning to end.The De Lucas had built their reputation on the arms trade, but after my brother died, my father lost all interest in expanding the business.By the time I returned, the family had only three remaining arms routes, two leading to North Africa and one to Eastern Europe, and none of them brought in much profit.I spent two weeks sorting through every account, shut down the least profitable route to North Africa, and redirected our resources toward Eastern Europe. Within two months, the volume moving through that route had doubled, and I personally traveled to Kyiv to negotiate partnerships and meet with buyers because I wanted to improve our margins.Six months later, the De Luca docks had expanded to three times their original size, and there was never any inventory left sitting in our wareh

“Enzo.” Emily gave him a gentle smile and beckoned him closer. “You’re finally back. Come here.”“What are you doing here?”“You’ve looked exhausted these past few days.” Emily got to her feet and walked toward him barefoot. “I was worried about you, so I came here to... wait for you.”When she reached him, she lifted a hand toward his face, but Enzo turned his head and avoided her touch.“That’s Linda’s robe,” he said with a frown.“I know.” Emily glanced down at the robe she was wearing. “But I’m a better fit than she ever was, and I don’t just mean the robe, do I?”“Emily, what exactly are you trying to say?”“Enzo, isn’t this what you wanted?” Emily looked at him with open affection. “Linda is gone, and she’s left this place open for us.”“I knew you before Linda ever did, and I understand you better than she does. I know you love me too, and I’m willing to become your wife. I can be the Donna of the Falcone family.”“Emily, have you lost your mind?” Enzo stared at her in disbelief

“Keep looking. There’s no way she left on her own!” Enzo yanked his tie loose in frustration and barked at his right-hand man, “Check every hotel and every private club. I don’t care if you have to turn all of New York upside down, I want Linda found.”Half an hour later, his right-hand man handed him a phone.“Don, you need to see this.”A surveillance video was playing on the screen. In the footage, Linda walked out of the estate with Buddy on a leash and a suitcase in her hand before getting into a car and driving away.“We traced the license plate, and the driver confirmed that he took her to the airport.” His right-hand man hesitated before continuing. “We also checked Miss Linda’s travel records. She booked a flight to Rome this morning, and the plane should be landing soon.”“What?”Enzo dropped heavily into the chair.Rome was where the De Luca family was based, which meant Linda had not been throwing a tantrum at all. She had truly left him.His right-hand man stood beside him

Enzo’s POVEnzo called Linda for the fifth time, but all he heard was the same automated message telling him that no one was answering. His patience was beginning to wear thin, and after opening their message thread, he typed rapidly.“Linda, where are you? The wedding is about to start. Why aren’t you answering your phone?”“Are you still angry about what happened with Buddy yesterday? I told you we could bring him back inside later. Just come over first.”“The guests are already here, and people from all the major families have arrived. This isn’t the time to throw a tantrum.”There was no response to any of his messages.Enzo tightened his grip on the phone and turned toward the window. The parking lot outside the estate was already packed with cars, and formally dressed guests were stepping out one after another. Several of them nodded to him in greeting, and he returned the gesture mechanically while the irritation inside him continued to build. His right-hand man pushed open the

The following afternoon, the butler pushed open the door just as I was slipping my travel documents into a folder.“Miss Linda!” His face was deathly pale. “Men from the Morek family have broken in. They’re already in the main hall downstairs!”Gunshots erupted below, mingling with the crash of shattered glass and overturned furniture.I hurried to the window and looked down. Three black sedans were parked across the front courtyard, while the guards from the gate lay sprawled beside the driveway. From the upstairs landing, I could make out at least two armed men in the hall below.“Call Enzo.”The butler pulled out his phone and dialed. The call connected, only to be cut off a few seconds later. He looked up at me, his expression strained. “Miss Linda, the Don said... he said he’s busy and can’t make it back right now.”Busy, was he?A cold laugh escaped me.“Don’t bother calling him again.” I closed the folder, put it into the drawer, then opened the bottom drawer of the nightstand.
