I stood in front of the full-length mirror in the bridal boutique, studying my reflection carefully.

The handmade lace gown was exquisite, its full skirt flaring from my waist, studded with expensive diamonds. But right then, it felt like a set of shackles.

As the attendant adjusted the skirt for me, I lowered my eyes and checked my phone once again.

The screen was empty, with no new messages waiting for me.

Enzo was nearly two hours late.

Our wedding was only three days away.

The Don of the Falcone family was about to marry the princess of the De Luca family, and the entire New York underworld was waiting for what was supposed to be a spectacular wedding.

The only person who did not seem to think it was particularly important was the groom himself.

“Miss De Luca, would you like to sit down and rest for a while?” the attendant asked carefully. “You've been standing for almost an hour.”

“No,” I said. “I'll wait a little longer.”

I continued staring out the window.

The bridal boutique was located on one of the busiest streets in the neighborhood, and beyond its floor-to-ceiling windows, pedestrians came and went while black sedans passed one after another.

A moment later, Enzo's black Bentley finally appeared.

He stepped out of the driver's seat, walked around to the passenger side, and opened the door.

Emily climbed out and looked up at him with a smile.

My heart immediately began to race, and almost without thinking, I called Enzo.

“Linda?” Enzo answered.

“Where are you?”

“I...” He paused for a moment. “I'm out. Something came up.”

“Enzo,” I said as I stared through the window at him and Emily, “do you remember what today is?”

The other end of the line went silent.

I heard him quietly tell Emily to wait before walking a few steps away, and when he spoke again, his voice was full of apology.

“Oh God, Linda, I'm sorry. I forgot. Emily kept calling me today and saying she wasn't feeling well. I was worried she might be sick, so I took her out to get her mind off things. I'm really sorry. I'll definitely go with you tomorrow, okay?”

“She's sick again?” I asked with a cold laugh.

“You know she hasn't been doing well lately.” Enzo looked exhausted, as though I were making things difficult for him by bringing it up. “Linda, you should understand.”

When it came to Emily, that was always what he asked of me.

Ten years ago, Emily's parents had been shot dead in the street by a rival family during a mob conflict.

Nine-year-old Emily had watched with her own eyes as her parents collapsed in a pool of blood.

Enzo's father and Emily's father had been close friends, so Enzo had taken it upon himself to protect her.

Whenever Emily called, Enzo would drop whatever he was doing and rush to her side.

Even though I was supposed to become his wife in three days, Emily could still call him away from me whenever she wanted.

Outside the window, Emily had already walked into the luxury boutique next door, and Enzo followed behind her like a knight.

“It's fine,” I said. “Stay with her.”

The relief in Enzo's voice was obvious.

“Really? You're not angry?”

“I'm not.”

“Pick whichever wedding dress you like and order it. Don't worry about the price.” His tone became noticeably lighter. “If you like something, just get it.”

“Okay,” I interrupted. “I'm hanging up.”

A few minutes later, the attendant approached me carrying a black velvet tray and bowed respectfully.

On the tray rested an unmarked black card embossed with the Falcone family crest.

“The Don instructed us to put everything you purchase today on his account.”

Before I could refuse, my phone vibrated.

It was a bank notification confirming a transfer, followed almost immediately by a message from Enzo.

“The card has no limit, so if you see something you like, just get it. If you need more money, tell me. I'm really sorry, and I hope you won't be upset. I promise I'll go with you tomorrow. Love you.”

It was always like this. Whenever he let me down, there would be a card, a bank transfer, and a casual apology waiting to make up for it.

He always tried to compensate for his absence with the most expensive things he could buy, whether it was an entire floor's worth of couture, extravagant jewelry, or sometimes even a limited-edition car.

After that, he would go right back to giving all his patience and all his time to Emily.

I used to coax him into giving me a little attention. He would patiently reassure me for a while, then turn around and be far more tender with Emily.

Eventually, I understood that crying and arguing changed nothing, because in Enzo's heart, I would always come after Emily.

So this time, I did nothing.

Three years later, under my leadership, the De Luca family had become the most prominent arms dealer in all of Europe.De Luca warehouses and docks could be found at nearly every major port.My life had settled into a peaceful routine. I woke early each morning to deal with paperwork, spent my afternoons checking on the docks or warehouses, and came home in the evenings to read or listen to music, occasionally meeting a business partner for dinner.Of course, there was also a new Don in my life, and that was Caspian.I had already moved on to a completely different life.News about Enzo still reached me from time to time, although I never asked about him myself. I would only hear bits and pieces when my lieutenants happened to mention him over dinner. They said Enzo had begun making mistake after mistake in his decisions for the Falcone family. First, he lost two major arms clients, and then someone outmaneuvered him during an acquisition deal, costing him a considerable amount of mone

After returning to the De Luca family, I stopped asking about Enzo and devoted all my attention to the family business. The first thing I did was go through the family accounts from beginning to end.The De Lucas had built their reputation on the arms trade, but after my brother died, my father lost all interest in expanding the business.By the time I returned, the family had only three remaining arms routes, two leading to North Africa and one to Eastern Europe, and none of them brought in much profit.I spent two weeks sorting through every account, shut down the least profitable route to North Africa, and redirected our resources toward Eastern Europe. Within two months, the volume moving through that route had doubled, and I personally traveled to Kyiv to negotiate partnerships and meet with buyers because I wanted to improve our margins.Six months later, the De Luca docks had expanded to three times their original size, and there was never any inventory left sitting in our wareh

“Enzo.” Emily gave him a gentle smile and beckoned him closer. “You’re finally back. Come here.”“What are you doing here?”“You’ve looked exhausted these past few days.” Emily got to her feet and walked toward him barefoot. “I was worried about you, so I came here to... wait for you.”When she reached him, she lifted a hand toward his face, but Enzo turned his head and avoided her touch.“That’s Linda’s robe,” he said with a frown.“I know.” Emily glanced down at the robe she was wearing. “But I’m a better fit than she ever was, and I don’t just mean the robe, do I?”“Emily, what exactly are you trying to say?”“Enzo, isn’t this what you wanted?” Emily looked at him with open affection. “Linda is gone, and she’s left this place open for us.”“I knew you before Linda ever did, and I understand you better than she does. I know you love me too, and I’m willing to become your wife. I can be the Donna of the Falcone family.”“Emily, have you lost your mind?” Enzo stared at her in disbelief

“Keep looking. There’s no way she left on her own!” Enzo yanked his tie loose in frustration and barked at his right-hand man, “Check every hotel and every private club. I don’t care if you have to turn all of New York upside down, I want Linda found.”Half an hour later, his right-hand man handed him a phone.“Don, you need to see this.”A surveillance video was playing on the screen. In the footage, Linda walked out of the estate with Buddy on a leash and a suitcase in her hand before getting into a car and driving away.“We traced the license plate, and the driver confirmed that he took her to the airport.” His right-hand man hesitated before continuing. “We also checked Miss Linda’s travel records. She booked a flight to Rome this morning, and the plane should be landing soon.”“What?”Enzo dropped heavily into the chair.Rome was where the De Luca family was based, which meant Linda had not been throwing a tantrum at all. She had truly left him.His right-hand man stood beside him

Enzo’s POVEnzo called Linda for the fifth time, but all he heard was the same automated message telling him that no one was answering. His patience was beginning to wear thin, and after opening their message thread, he typed rapidly.“Linda, where are you? The wedding is about to start. Why aren’t you answering your phone?”“Are you still angry about what happened with Buddy yesterday? I told you we could bring him back inside later. Just come over first.”“The guests are already here, and people from all the major families have arrived. This isn’t the time to throw a tantrum.”There was no response to any of his messages.Enzo tightened his grip on the phone and turned toward the window. The parking lot outside the estate was already packed with cars, and formally dressed guests were stepping out one after another. Several of them nodded to him in greeting, and he returned the gesture mechanically while the irritation inside him continued to build. His right-hand man pushed open the

The following afternoon, the butler pushed open the door just as I was slipping my travel documents into a folder.“Miss Linda!” His face was deathly pale. “Men from the Morek family have broken in. They’re already in the main hall downstairs!”Gunshots erupted below, mingling with the crash of shattered glass and overturned furniture.I hurried to the window and looked down. Three black sedans were parked across the front courtyard, while the guards from the gate lay sprawled beside the driveway. From the upstairs landing, I could make out at least two armed men in the hall below.“Call Enzo.”The butler pulled out his phone and dialed. The call connected, only to be cut off a few seconds later. He looked up at me, his expression strained. “Miss Linda, the Don said... he said he’s busy and can’t make it back right now.”Busy, was he?A cold laugh escaped me.“Don’t bother calling him again.” I closed the folder, put it into the drawer, then opened the bottom drawer of the nightstand.
