Chapter 2

Author: A.Nostos
Dante drove me to my apartment in the city.

Before I got out, he was still holding my hand, his thumb brushing over my ring finger as if by accident.

"Tomorrow, I want to see you at your most dazzling."

He looked at me, kissed the back of my hand one last time, and reluctantly let me go.

I leaned in, brushed my fingers over his cheek, and lifted his chin with one finger.

"You're the one who has to win me over. If I don't like the proposal, I can change my mind anytime."

Dante narrowed his eyes and cupped my hand in his. His Adam's apple bobbed, and his voice came out a little rough.

"My darling fiancée, I can't take much more of your teasing..."

I snorted, pulled my hand back, and went upstairs.

Once I reached my apartment window, Dante honked to acknowledge me before driving away with his convoy.

Nico's things were still in the apartment.

His slippers sat by the door. The bar cabinet still held the liquor he liked. Every gift he'd ever given me was arranged in a display case.

I leaned against the window, lit a slim cigarette, and stared blankly at the display case.

Five years ago, my father hadn't thought much of him. He said Nico was too young and too hotheaded.

Nico had just turned 22. He took a knife straight through the shoulder while saving me, blood soaking his shirt.

He collapsed in my arms, his face frighteningly pale, but he still smiled.

"Camila, you owe me your life. You'd better be nice to me from now on."

My father called him a reckless kid playing hero. He said Nico would never amount to anything.

But over the next two years, that reckless kid took the two toughest pieces of territory in Brooklyn for my father and became his youngest right-hand man.

We dated for two years, but my father still refused to approve our marriage. He said Nico wasn't good enough for the Moretti name.

Nico didn't argue. He volunteered to go undercover in Mexico and swore he wouldn't return until he had seized that drug route.

The night before he left, he asked me to meet him and slid the ring onto my finger himself.

"Camila, wait for me."

No one knew whether Nico would make it back alive, but I stubbornly waited three years for him anyway.

More than 1,000 days and nights passed. I lost count of how often I woke from nightmares and longed for his triumphant return.

And what did I get for all that waiting? Him standing in front of the whole Moretti family, holding another woman's hand, saying he wanted out of our engagement.

I blew out the last of the smoke and waved away memories that didn't matter anymore.

Women in the Moretti family don't wallow in the past.

I had someone bring boxes, and I threw out all his things.

The display case was empty. I was wondering what to put in it when my phone started ringing nonstop.

Nico's name was on the screen. I stared at it for two seconds, then hit decline.

As soon as the call ended, the texts started popping up.

"Camila, baby, I'm begging you. Tell me where you are.

"Baby, don't let him touch you... You know I can't stand other men near you. Dante's a bastard!"

They just kept coming. Annoyed, I put my phone on silent.

The next afternoon, I had just finished getting ready and was admiring my reflection when Dante knocked on my door with a huge bouquet of red roses.

When I opened it, he was looking at the boxes by the door, and he couldn't hide his grin.

I leaned against the doorframe and glanced at the roses.

"That's it? Where's the effort?"

Dante waved a hand, and his guards fanned out behind him.

Every one of them was carrying several beautifully wrapped gifts.

"This is just the appetizer, my fiancée."

He looked at me, his eyes gleaming with amusement.

"Might I have the honor of taking you to dinner?"

I gave him a small smile and took his hand.

The convoy followed the river for half an hour or so before stopping outside a brilliantly lit private club.

I knew this place well.

The Vitale family had taken it from us a few years ago. It was the most luxurious club in town.

Before that, my father used to entertain guests here all the time.

I let out a soft laugh and tilted my head toward Dante.

"Hmm? You brought me to admire your trophies?"

Dante leaned in and breathed in the scent of my hair. "Get out and see for yourself," he murmured.

A bright red velvet carpet ran up the stairs to the second floor, and roses and ribbons filled every corner.

With my arm linked through Dante's, I slowly climbed the stairs. At the top, I spotted a familiar figure seated in the place of honor.

My father was sipping his drink, and for once, he didn't look angry.

Before I could say anything, Dante leaned closer.

"I told you I'd show you I meant it.

"This private club and the two clubs behind it are all yours."

I laced my fingers through Dante's, our wedding rings pressed together."But why didn't you ever tell me?"Dante laughed softly and said nothing. He only answered after I kept pushing."I was afraid you'd think I only proposed to repay you..."Camila, I proposed because I love you. And I wanted you to be with me because you love me too."He lowered his eyes. "Do you know how scared I was every time I saw Nico chasing after you? I was scared you'd only said yes to me to get back at him. I was scared you'd forgive him again."My heart ached a little.Dante always seemed so calm and in control. He almost never opened up like this.He was the Don of the Vitale family, but he was also that boy outside the church. After all those years, he'd still been watching over me, quietly waiting for his chance to get close.I moved closer and nestled into his arms.Dante was warmer than the cashmere blanket, and the warmth made the tips of my ears turn pink."Dante, I'm so glad I called you that day.

On our wedding day, white roses lined the aisle all the way to the altar. Dante stood there smiling and held out his hand to me.He slid the wedding band onto my finger and lifted my veil.Soft light from the stained glass fell across his face, and I rose on my toes and kissed him first.Applause broke out. Smiling, he tightened his arm around my waist and deepened the kiss, slow and tender.Married life was peaceful and happy. Every morning before he left, Dante would linger by the front door forever, trying to coax a kiss out of me.His men waiting outside could only look at the ground and pretend they hadn't seen a thing.I couldn't resist teasing him. "Mr. Vitale, what happened to the fearsome Don everyone knows?"He leaned close to my ear and murmured, "Camila, if you keep smiling like that, I won't want to leave today."Whenever I returned to the estate for dinner with my father, Dante joined us if his schedule allowed. They got along fine as long as they didn't talk business. "Don't listen to her!"Blood was still seeping from Nico's mouth. "Camila, you don't owe me anything. Don't give in to her for my sake!"Leah pressed the gun harder against his head. "Who said you could speak?"I took two steps closer and spoke calmly. "Don't you want to negotiate with my father? Put the gun down, and I'll call him.""You don't get to make deals right now!" she snapped. "Kneel!"Before I could move, Dante's voice came through the earpiece I'd put in before I left."Camila, we're coming in!"The next second, the side door of the warehouse burst open, and Dante charged in with his men!Leah instinctively turned toward the noise. I seized the opportunity to lunge at her and knock her gun hand aside. The gun went off, and a package on a nearby shelf burst open. She screamed and tried to aim the gun at me, but Dante was already there. He wrested it from her hand and slammed her to the floor. My father's men quickly subdued the others, securing the warehouse."Let me go! I'm

Nico and Leah had vanished together. My father's men searched everywhere but found no trace of them. Dante grew increasingly busy, too.But he always made time to take me shopping, take me to dinner, and plan little surprises for me.Our days together were warm and easy, like any normal couple's.But as long as Nico and Leah remained missing, I couldn't shake the feeling that danger was lurking in the dark.So the wedding kept getting pushed back.Dante kept telling me everything would be fine, but I knew he was desperate to get married as soon as possible. His men quietly complained to me about how impatient their Don had become.I teased him. "Mr. Vitale, what happened to that famous composure of yours?"He kissed my fingertips. "I can't wait to make you my wife, Mrs. Vitale."But time did nothing to ease my anxiety. I couldn't forget the danger we'd faced on our wedding day. Then one afternoon, I got a call from a number I didn't know."Ms. Moretti, please, you have to save Nico!"I

I frowned at Nico."Who told you that?""Leah! She overheard the Vitale family's plan. They're planning to use the wedding to take out your entire family in one fell swoop!"Nico struggled to inch forward."Camila, I came to save you! Leah was even willing to put our relationship aside for now so I could come find you—"My father cut him off, his voice low. "She's the one who got you out of the holding cell?"Nico froze, then gave a reluctant nod.My father's expression darkened further. With a wave of his hand, he ordered the guards to take Nico away. The wedding had to be put on hold, and the whole fiasco left everyone in a foul mood.Dante took my hand, his expression solemn. "Camila, I swear to God, the Vitale family has no plan against you. Believe me."I ran my thumb over the back of his hand and smiled at him."I know. If Nico were right, you'd have made your move by now."Dante's tense expression gradually softened.Something flickered in his eyes, as though he wanted to say mo

Nico raised the detonator. Even with the guards' guns trained on him, nobody dared move.My father's expression darkened. "Put the gun down! Do you have any idea who's sitting in this room?""All I want is Camila!"Nico stared at me with red eyes, his chest heaving."If she comes with me, I won't hurt anyone!"Dante stepped in front of me, his voice terrifyingly cold."You showed up at her wedding strapped with explosives, and you expect me to believe you care about her safety?"Nico clenched his jaw, the gun shaking in his hand.I looked at Nico over Dante's shoulder."You want to talk? Fine. But let the guests leave first.""Come here first!" Nico's face was frantic.I sighed, stepped out from behind Dante, and faced Nico's gun head-on.Nico faltered and slowly lowered the gun."Nico, we all know how much you've done for this family over the years. I don't want you to throw your future away."I walked slowly toward him.Dante and my father called out to me anxiously from behind, but
